I'm way too hungry to be watching this. ;) You guys are really making us want to go to the Ukraine. It makes it an easy choice when there are food options like this as well. - Trevor
It also took me some time to pick up Cyrillic because it just messes with your mind sometimes when you look at a letter that looks similar to Latin "H" and you have to pronounce it as "N", what seems like Latin alphabet "P" is pronounced as "R". But once you get the hang of it you'll be able to read everything
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos Hahah yes and you'll be able to use it in the future when visiting countries that are using the Cyrillic script, it's useful to pick up.
I love how you guys crave Korean food all the time! 😂 you guys should create a book on Korean food all over the world. BTW, I turned on my notification for your vids! You guys are the best!
Yes as the others have mentioned there are actually Koreans throughout many of the countries which formed the Soviet Union (especially in Central Asia eg Kazakhstan & Uzbekistan), Ukraine included. They are also known as Koryo saram (Корё сарам) in these countries. Koreans began migrating to what is today the region of Primorsky Krai (Приморский Край) in the Russian Far East starting from the 19th century, which was formerly part of China. These Koreans thought they were migrating to China until they found themselves in Russian territory after the Treaty of Beijing (北京條約) and Treaty of Aigun (璦琿條約) was signed between China and Russia in 1858 and 1860 respectively, which ceded the territory north of the Amur River and east of the Ussuri River to Russia. Following the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war and WWII, the Soviet Union feared that the local Koreans would work as spies for the Japanese, and Stalin deported the entire population of Koreans west, mostly towards Central Asia, whereas some of them also found themselves on the other side of the world in southern Ukraine.
Ah, that is fascinating to hear. In one particular area in Seoul (near Dongdaemun) you can find Russian restaurants run by Russian Koreans living in Seoul.
Sam & Audrey, so funny yet adorable how you guys crave Korean. My Singaporean husband burst out laughing when you guys were talking about craving Korean food. The jjigae that was similar to sundubu is actually called biji, which refers to the remnants after making tofu. It's a traditional north-Korean dish, filled with tons of fiber and quite tasty. So glad you guys were able to find joy in that awesome Korean meal in Ukraine. Happy travels & kudos to your endless Korean cravings!
How can you forget go chu jang sauce??? I remember when you featured your Korean food videos that was a staple of the food. I even went to my local Korean restaurant and really enjoyed that spicy sauce.
i think this is not Sundubu cchigae but bizi cchigae. sundubu and bizi both made of beans. but texture and taste are different. the chunk of sundubu tofu is bigger size than bizi's one. buzi's tofu is the small particles rather than the chunk. and bizi cchigae has some pork chunk and kimchi without egg. it taste like more nutty tasting or flavor than sundubu cchigae. on the contrary sundubu cchigae come along with egg and seafood like shell, prawn, pieces of squid. and more spicy than bizi cchigae.
i had eaten korean foods here and there in Singapore. but it had been expensive and taste had not been korean food exactly. If you keep korean food right receipe, it would have no choice but to taste. but i feel like that something is lack ingredient on the food in other country.
I'm a bit late if you've already visited Ukraine, but I wanted to leave this th-cam.com/video/zV7G1lV01rc/w-d-xo.html channel here. There's much info on cafes and restaurants of Kyiv, also you'll find some useful tips to have a good time being here. He tells about museums, viewpoints and other cool places.
Oh my gosh, I miss Korean food so much. My son and his wife (who is Korean) moved from Seoul to Germany two years ago, so I no longer get to visit Korea :( On a positive note, they have a great Korean restaurant 5 minutes walk from their home in Berlin. The food is amazingly good, maybe even better than I've had in Korea. Korean food is so addictive.
Wow! That is great to hear. We've had some of our best Korean meals outside of Korea as well. One that comes to mind is a restaurant in KoreaTown in Toronto.
I ordered marinated pork with soya sauce. It is called 양념 목살. We fried it by ourselves and when it was ready we just wrapped few pieces of meat with some sauce in salad leaves and ate it. It is my favorite way of eating the meat. :) Anyway, I’ve learnt how to cook almost all my favorite Korean dishes at home, so when I want something really spicy, I can eat it at home. :)
It brings me such satisfaction knowing you guys love Korean food enough to actually crave it! Just like real Koreans. A lot of Koreans travel with ramen noodles, gochujang, and geem in their bags. LOL. Speaking of geem, that seaweed is called mee-yuck. You guys are awesome!
Ah, thank you! What a wonderful surprise it was for us to visit Ukraine this year. And we enjoyed it so much that I think we'll make a video at the end of our series encouraging people to come visit :)
We picked a quiet section of the restaurant and ate in the middle of the afternoon. There were some other customers on the other side of the restaurant.
Wow...Never thought they would have Korean restaurant in Kiev until now. You're in Ukraine and thinking about Korean food because you haven't had it for ages, 6 months lol. I can tell you that they were using the wrong kind of tofu for your 순두부 찌개. It should be soft tofu (순두부), but it looked like a regular tofu they used. But, you enjoyed it anyway!!! Happy and safe traveling!!
How Would Koreans REALLY Say That?! I think only in East Asia do we have so many different varieties of tofu, so they probably just substituted regular tofu for soft tofu.
Thank you very much! Such a nice surprise to have it in Kiev :) Yeah, it was basically the regular tofu which is okay but I far prefer the silken tofu in this dish and I like the broth to be a bit spicier as well.
I had expected that they would have lowered the spiciness. I have eaten Japanese food in the Netherlands with Ukrainian people and they complained that the Japanese food in the Netherlands is too spicy.
lol, yes you got the Korean word for watermelon correct! Looks like you guys are losing some of the Korean pronunciations but totally understandable since you don't use it as often but still impressive on how many things you remember! The seaweed thing looked like me-yeok. There are variety of soon du boo, Sam you guessed it, seafood version, kimchi, beef, even mandu soon du boo! I am curious if the owners spoke to you in Korean, or English? There is actually a history of Koreans living in that region, going back as far as the 19th century, some call themselves goryo saram, one of those area is in southern Ukraine.
Thank you! Hahaha...I'm glad we remembered watermelon. The watermelon in Korea is some of the best we've had anywhere. I remember specifically looking foward to summer when it was in season and could easily buy it when we lived in Korea. We spoke to each other in English but I was tempted to try Korean. I said the names of the dishes in Korean (they weren't listed as such) but when she didn't speak back in Korean I thought maybe she didn't know it but that may have been the wrong assumption on my part.
고마워요! 우리는 곧 한국을 다시 방문하기를 희망한다. 우리는 한국에서 여행과 음식을 너무 많이 그리워합니다. Thank you very much! We sure hope to revisit South Korea again soon. We miss travel and food in Korea very much.
That highly rated restaurant is shown in Google Maps. So is the table and actual chair Audrey is sitting in. I just discovered Google Maps yesterday. They show 118 photos of the restaurant and their food. Google just added their entire massive "Street View" 360 degree "global view" library to their new Google Earth VR virtual reality version. So I see the entire city of Kiev in 360 (global view) HD on my Oculus Rift head mounted display. Their street view imagery now comes from 5 different camera vehicle source types so it covers pretty much everything of interest. Anyone can become a certified Google "Trusted" photographer if they buy the right camera and Google publishes 50 or your photos. They claim that "certification" has value and you do get a certification badge. One can also make application to borrow and use their 44 pound "Trekker" unit which is one of those 5 camera vehicles. The 360 fully global images you take however belong to them. All of that information is at www.google.com/streetview/
Man .. love ya both, but lose the Jodhpur shirt .. it reminds me of an Australian Rules Football team jersey , in as equally bad taste ... I'm a stuck on viewer ... love ya work
Another great video. I am looking fwd to visiting Kyiv again and enjoying the food.

That 2nd Kimchi you liked was pan fried Kimchi 볶음김치. Normally served with Boiled plane Tofu to form a dish of 두부김치
Thanks for letting us know about that!
I remember having 두부김치 sometimes at bars when we lived in Korea :)
Woww those plates of side dishes and even the bowl look from Korea !
Yeah, we were really pleased by that! We always enjoy the most authentic experience possible.
that is wonderful ,i see you guys enjoyed that may be ill be there trying the food shortly . Samuel your Korean is very good bro !
Thank you very much! That is great to hear you'll go there.

It is so worth learning it you visit for a while. Audrey was reading everything for us :)
Come on Samuel, it is easy to learn! You can do it!

We love Korean food too so it was so much fun watching your reactions. Authentic Korean food in the Ukraine. Who would have thunk?
Thank you! It was a great surprise :)
I'd go for the vegetarian versions. That looks so good and authentic and so much for so little cost.
Yeah, it was a great value meal :) I'm sure you could request that.
that kimchi is called roasted or fried-kimchi(볶은 김치, 김치볶음)
Thanks for letting us know!
Yum!! Yum!! Love me some banchan!!!
Thanks! Sometimes the banchan is the best part and that is not to say the main dishes are not delicious.
참 대단해요 짱

Woah! That is awesome. I would suggest ordering the dishes we got maybe aside from the soup since it wasn't that authentic.
Don't drive during rush hour...
You'll thank me later

I was in the same restoraunt at the same table few days ago. :)
As for me, the food was not so spicy, as in Korea.
So cool! What did you order? Yeah, that is one thing we notice about most Korean food outside of Korea. It is not as spicy.

That price is so good wtffff. Would have been about double in the USA around where I live haha.
LOL, I know what you mean. It was nice having such a good Korean meal at that price point.
They messed up your soontoobu jigae. They put old tofu there and it crumbled apart.
Yes, that was the worst part of our meal.

We have do a lot of walking and light eating in between ;)
My nose runs scary time I eat Krean Food.
Ah, same here! Takes us some time to get used to it.
:-)
:)

Hahaha...I just got a new polo t-shirt from Ukraine so I might be adding that in the mix soon ;)
Sam, stop wearing orange, red, and other color that does not complement your fair skin and red hair...
What colors would you suggest I try?
