    It is interesting that using a Japanese word could be considered cultural appropriation. We use French words all the time in English and no one accuses us of appropriating French culture. I am glad you showed the video of Haruka stating how crazy she thought all of the negativity was. Hoping the young kids are listening to her and you.

    • @wickedbunniez
      @wickedbunniez  ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Exactly! I really think we take things too far in the US because they aren’t as crazy like this in other countries when it comes to “appropriating” other cultures. It’s so silly though because ‘kawaii’ in particular is not appropriation, it’s appreciation!

      Not really related but as a French person, we also use a lot of English word that don't have an accurate French translation in our everyday speech, teachers litteraly fight daily so that student don't use word translated by English in our text lol, it's completely normalised even though most of us don't have a great English level at all

    From what I've heard, "Cutecore" has been called an umbrella term for any cute aesthetic, or as a way to say "Cutegore" which is an aesthetic SIMILAR to gurokawaii, but they didn't want to openly say "gore" in the aesthetic name.

    • @wickedbunniez
      @wickedbunniez  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      I’ve heard of that before! I heard that they didn’t use “gore” since it’ll get censored on different platforms 🤔 The problem is that people are using the term “Cutecore” for things that are just kawaii or kawaii fashion, which is whitewashing as the styles usually have actual names, but in Japanese since they are from Japan. For example, I’ve seen soooo many people refer to the “Fairy kei” style as “Cutecore” and it’s a bit disappointing because it completely ignores the cultural aspect behind the fashion. I would tread carefully using “Cutecore” to describe general Kawaii things as from what I’ve seen online, Japanese people don’t seem to like that term.

    Omg yesss. I’m glad kawaii fashion and the aesthetic has gotten so popular! It’s so cute and it’s cool to see it evolve from like, the past couple years. Sometimes I wish I could gatekeep it tho bc I see quite a few people, whether it’s minors or adults sexualize it. Like, I just saw this “nsfw cutecore” subliminal and it was like, attract ped0s and pervs who will fetishize u with “loli” clothes and more rly disturbing affirmations (IT SAID IT WAS MADE FOR 15+ TOO…) :( I just hope we don’t become generalized with them bc kawaii fashion is such an amazing style and it rly makes me happy ^_^

    • @wickedbunniez
      @wickedbunniez  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Me too! Kawaii fashion is adorable ☺️ I get what you mean about gatekeeping… it’s unfortunate that cutesy styles like this tend to attract such disgusting people 🤦🏻‍♀️ like I can’t BELIEVE there’s a subliminal out there to attract pedos?! Wtf??? Those people need to be jailed- especially with it being 15+?! (Not that 18+ would’ve made it better..)
      I think overall though there are more normal, cute loving people in the community than gross kind. It’s unfortunate that the gross kinda are so loud! Just need to ignore and report those types so they can’t ruin things for others!! Kawaii fashion is truly an adorable way to express yourself💕🎀

    • @Kirstenkriskat
      @Kirstenkriskat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ugh I know what you mean. I have seeing subliminals that have a “cutecore” or kawaii theme and then it’s about manifesting things like ped0s or getting autism or something. I find them really gross and they’re also very insensitive to the victims of grooming/csa
      . Their cute theme also attracts minors who may not know any better :(.

    Great video, but just want to highlight for anyone watching that 系 does not mean fashion style in Japanese. Style is one way to roughly translate it, but not “style” in the sense of a specific fashion style like lolita or morigirl or fairy kei, so adding “系” to any word does not define it as a fashion style. I think English/non-Japanese often mistake it because online/fashion magazines often say things like natural-kei or fairy-kei, but in slang it actually means more like “type” and not “fashion style”… like a type of girl who likes fairy-like styles, like how we stereotype cheerleaders or preps or goths; over time and repeated usage it evolves to be a defined fashion style but 系 itself does not mean a style. In non-slang Japanese, 系/kei means system or lineage, and can be a bit negative depending on its usage when describing a person or groups of persons (sorta like あっち系, “oh… one of THOSE people” slang for gay person). Just a heads up for alternative Japanese fashion enthusiasts who want to try to create their own niche style.

    • @wickedbunniez
      @wickedbunniez  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you! ☺️ I appreciate you going into detail of what “系” fully means for others getting into J-fashion as I didn’t go over it fully in detail in this video. I’ve seen some Japanese creators on Tiktok like user otknoharuka say to use something like “kawaii kei” or “pastel kei” as an alternative to using “cutecore” or even “jojifuku” since there’s a lot of stigma behind it. I’d be interested in knowing what other native Japanese speakers think of calling the style as I haven’t seen much discussion of what the proper name for the style should be called.

    • @mius.cereal
      @mius.cereal 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I also know Japanese guys use “kei” in a misogynistic way to categorise women so I’ve also seen some Japanese people say not to add kei to styles that don’t already have it in the name like mori kei fairy kei vkei etc

    I might use both Kawaii Kei and Cutecore interchangeably! I heard that "Kei" doesn't just mean style though, it means something like group or syndicate! But Kei is a word mainly used for describing Harajuku fashion, so Kawaii Kei should be the fashion, and Cutecore can refer to everything else!

    • @wickedbunniez
      @wickedbunniez  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      That makes sense! I think as long as you’re not calling the fashion itself Cutecore, people won’t mind. Then again, I’m not Japanese nor from Japan, and I think we should listen to what they say first as they’re the originators of Kawaii fashion / aesthetic! If you can, I would definitely research to see if you can find what other Japanese creators think about using the word Cutecore over Kawaii :)

    • @wickedbunniez
      @wickedbunniez  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The difference between the two really comes down to silhouettes of the outfits and what the themes are. Fairy kei you see more 80s childhood nostalgia like Care Bears, vintage mlp, rainbow brites, whereas kawaii kei is more late 90s/2000s childhood nostalgia (strawberry shortcake, hello kitty, my melo, etc.) Fairy kei tends to use items like sweaters, tutus and oversized clothing, and kawaii kei usually is tees, ruffled skirts and tighter fitting clothing! Hope this helps ☺️💞🎀

    For me personally I don’t really mind the term cutecore since it’s better than saying jojifuku (which was a quite straightforward term but unfortunately it has a bad history) I think everyone will have their own opinion on cutecore vs kawaiicore vs kawaiikei
    but I feel like cutecore is fine because that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s being whitewashed most cutecore people love anime and jfashion and aren’t trying to steal or stray away from the fact they’re heavily inspired by Japanese media and fashion it’s just more that they’re in a weird middle ground where they aren’t following the rules of fairykei jojifuku or general yumekawaii and they just kind of take the parts they like from kawaii subcultures which I guess some people may see as appropriation or white washing but I just see it as having a realistic style where you are going to probably like different things and different styles and want to branch out and not just stick to following the rules of one style all the time
    I also don’t mind kawaiicore since it’s pretty much the same as cutecore and I guess it helps to get across that it’s roots are in Japanese media/fashion
    but idk for me kawaiikei is kind of a no just because the argument for it comes across as disingenuous I see a lot of people shaming others for saying cutecore instead of kawaiikei but kawaiikei isn’t a thing and never was a thing so I feel like a lot of people have just convinced themselves it was always called kawaiikei and then some evil westerners called it cutecore instead when that wasn’t the intention at all and I think it comes from a place of bitterness because some weird people hate to see Japanese culture being embraced in the west like the increase in anime watchers or people into jfashion and always see it as a bad thing so I just find it weird that people made up a term out of nowhere and are trying to say cutecore was stolen from it but that’s just my opinion since I’m mixed and not Asian I can’t speak for Japanese people but I honestly don’t think they care at all and I think there is a lot of actual cultural appropriation by westerners and dressing up in pastel clothes and calling it a cute aesthetic isn’t one of them
