Re-flashing my OVTUNED Tacoma | 4.0 Performance Tune on a 3rd Gen Tacoma

  • Recently was able to reflash my Tacoma with the latest and greatest 4.0 91 Performance tune. So far it’s been amazing with more power, slightly better MPGs, and wayyyy better shift points.

    I had mine tuned with 93 and love it... along with mine being manual transmission makes it that much more enjoyable. I also did clutch accumulator delete.

      Hi I own a 19 taco MT, can you please tell me how's the mpg since you got the tune and how do you feel the truck after you did that? Also what did you used to be able to delete the accumulator? Thanks!

      @@redelbe1 I know you didn't ask me, but I have a similar truck and maybe this could answer your question?
      I have a 2018 MT TRD Sport D.C.S.B with the 2.0 OVTune Premium (91) FOBDump file. I have a Full AFE high flow catted exhaust system, Borla S type cat back, AFE Intake, Upgraded Coil Packs and Stock 17" Tires. I run nothing but 93 Octane.
      I do ALOT of highway driving, from Northeast PA to Illinois and back. I can get up to 24 MPG if I keep it under 70 MPH, and about 19-22 MPG if I'm doing 75+MPH. Driving around town I have gotten up to 28 MPG. When I want to drive *Spirited* the truck picks up and goes like hell. Huge difference from stock when I drove it home 200 miles. Especially past 4K RPM. *Spirited* driving gets around 14 MPG, but I'm not really looking to get good MPG when I'm driving like Mario Andretti.
      The Clutch Accumulator Delete is SUPER easy. there is a great write up on Tacoma World, I'll link it here, on what to buy and how to do it. Makes a HUGE difference in my opinion and is definitely worth doing if you haven't already.

      @@redelbe1 Glad I could help! If you want OVTune sells a kit that you can flash your truck at home with a laptop computer. I bought one a while back and have had a few different tunes flashed since they keep updating their databases. It's about $750.00 for the kit, licence for one (1) ECM, the OBD2 to mini USB connector and the VFTuner software activation. It's nice to be able to swap from a fun tune, to the towing or basic 87 flash. And if I need dealer work done I just flash back to stock, just to be safe. Please let me know what you get for MPG if you end up going with the 93 Tune. I'm curious if all the mods I did to mine affected the MPG greatly.

    I have the 91 octane tune on my 2020 Tacoma and it’s not much of a difference stick to 87 if you plan on getting the ov tune stick to 87 performance tune don’t waist your money

      91 is a must if you tow… 87 will not cut it

      When you start to actually push the limits with parts and tuning I’ve found that the 87 octane doesn’t go very far. Engine quickly starts to ping at any major timing advancement.

    Can u explain the issue on 87 2.0? U said at 32 mph it didnt want to downshift? So im assuming when slowing down it hesitated and then shifted to 2nd or we talking while acclerating and stepping on it it wouldnt downshift and speed up?please explain .im.about to get mine tuned and my biggest issue is stock shifting. Im Thinking 87 2.0 or kdmax 6 but not sure which one will fit my needs..

    Nobody will give me a straight answer. Will it pass a stringent California smog test. My guess is no.

      Thanks for watching! I’m not familiar with any 1st gen tunes, OV/VF is only for the 3rd gen Tacoma and a few Lexus models

    2019 Tacoma, 4:88 gears &33s here. With the 91-OV ive improved 3MPG, love the feel & shift points. It was suggested by the guy that did my tune not to run 87 & to keep a bottle of octane boost in the truck incase i run into a situation where a station was out of 91, said it could ping with 87.
    On a side note, i sometimes tow a 3000lb travel trailer, the MPG oddly dropped back to 10-11 the same as before the tune & the shift points where WAY low. I was pulling hills at 4500 RPM at 60MPH.

      What do u mean shifts were low??? I've never seen my stock tacoma even get to 4500 rpm... It shifted what felt like too early?

      Not towing i love it. With a trailer thats aprox 3500lb it down shifts to soon up hills ill be at 4500RPM running 60mph

      CD - would you recommend a tune for someone that does haul a trailer? I also have a 3500lb trailer and I'm looking at a tune to help with the MPG. Recently I went 75 miles and averaged 7.2mpg pulling it. I need to get that number up or I'll be looking for a different truck.

      I was happier towing without the tune. But i have 4:88 gears (33"tires)
      MPG towing didn't change with the tune 10 - 11.
