Been playing almost a couple of years (self taught) and I often bounce my leg naturally because it helps me keep better time overall. But I need to learn how to take that natural bounce and create hi-hat chicks. Easy to bounce, hard to make noise! I’ll keep working on it.
This definitely is something I’ve never done with any consistency, and yet I most certainly realize how important it is. All you need to do is look at anything John Bonham plays to see how important this is. Great video.
I am left handed but right footed and so I can keep it going for a couple of measures but I end up stopping the high hat tap and going to the base drum tap.........it is driving me crazy but I will get there in the end. Great lesson!! I love to stretch myself
You have done an awesome and exceptional job describing and performing all your lessons on drumming. Congratulations. What an inspiration to all drummers. Keep those lessons and videos coming.😊
I was fortunate to take some lessons w a guy who emphasized this early on. I use it often. And off beats as well with the hh sound cool. I find that the further the weight moves to my heel , the louder the chick. And I don’t need to raise my heel as high either. This really helps with keeping eighth notes at anything over 120 bpm.
Last week during a concert with our wind band I played for the first time 4bar fill/solo adding my left foot on the downbeat.... And it sounded great! I just started to incorporate hihat "chicks".... This video is released in perfect time! Thank you, great lesson! 😊
Nice concise lesson Stephen! Glad you have shortened your videos lately. I had no trouble not falling asleep like your 20 + minute videos were. Short and sweet to the point helps my attention span!
months ago i just only , practiced opening & closing my hi hat with my left foot at a rapid tempo . next day i woke up and my left foot had blown up and turned red. so word to the wise is a lyric from the Paul Simon song 59th Street Bridge song... "slow down you move to fast" . Stephen i enjoy your tutorials but you might want to devote a lesson about drumming practices or performance that result in hand & foot injury's . Max Weinberg who drummed for Bruce Springsteen had to seek medical help for i believe hand injury to the finger joints. a hand surgeon operated on his hands ( both ) . after recovery he now has a pre performance hand warm up routine he utilizes. thank you .
Well, I've never been intentional about "left-foot timekeeping" I've not been trying to incorporate it into my playing. The leg bounce isn't so hard, it's always a coordination issue with me. But I'm know someday I'm gonna be able to play all I hear in my head, with lessons like this and also the eguides (btw except there's a very new one I have all since 2021
What I've always struggled with is balance between feet with heal up/down. If I'm playing heal up on the hi-hat, I have to play heal down on bass because I'll start leaning backwards to compensate for not falling forward into my kit. I've tried many different seating positions both to/fro from kit as well as height and nothing has helped. May be a core thing. I don't know.
Yes his foot wear in all his videos are Moccasins . many different native Americans made and wore this particular form of footwear . i imagine there not suitable for heavy metal drummers . seems they work for Stephen fine.
Hello Stephen... I'm trying to get in touch with you since weeks, but it seems impossible thrue your contact link in web site. Any suggestions? Thanks 😊🙏
the verbal transcript for this video has the robot or AI write ( 13 minutes into video ) " advanced screw " instead of what Stephen actually said which was " advanced groove " . the only advanced screw i have ever encountered was my friends girlfriend . 😮 wow did i actually say that 😱
anyone else have like.. a random twitch every so often when trying to keep time like this with your left foot. Its frustrating, i feel like its a neurological issue or something, I'll be keeping time just fine but my left foot will decide to have a mind of its own and mess it all up after a few bars of being perfect.

same here!!!! been bouncing to rhythms ever since I remember myself...but that's a whola different sort of thing!
I've been playing for quite a while past few years I just started keeping time with my left foot this video opened up a whole new door for me
Nicely done and very helpful. Thanks Stephen

And best socks on any drumming video :)

Also. Thanks so much for these lessons. The stool position video has been a real game changer for me. 🥁❤️

Cool video thanks for sharing. Cool to see how that motion makes the hi hat sound. Thank you again

thanks for this video!!! love it
Great lesson Stephen! I'm at the point where if I learn a groove or fill, I don't feel it's complete unless I can play hi-hat time though it. 😁❤️
Where's part 1? Please provide a link. Thanks.

Thanks. This tires out my left hip flexor pretty quickly, keeping my heel up and moving like that. Is it just something I need to build up strength?

Biggest challenge - I'm a big guy with a LOT of leg to get bouncing.
Promo*SM 🙈
The fact that you play your bass pedal heel down might explain why your drumming is so non-glamorous. 🤔
I think your videos need to be shorter.
Yes please
They used to be way longer actually
