    Every DIY video should be like this. Thought I was going to have to go through the hassle of a dealer to find a key then pay $50-100. Went out to my 2008 6.4 and this worked like a charm

    I’m sure that has been a ford secret for a long time but the unnamed tech who released it to you is the unsung hero here, he has a good heart and couldn’t keep letting the public get screwed by these lost wheel lock keys, so he waited until the next guy with a good heart came along that needed to know the secret and he shared it with Ron because he knew Ron would relay his message clearly to thousands, thanks so much to both of y’all.

    03 F-150: beat a 14mm extraction socket onto the lock device with a hammer. Lowered tire. Socket stayed on the locking mechanism. Took off the lowering device like shown. Locking mechanism came off when I tried removing the extraction socket. Now works with just the tool under the hood. Did all of this in about 30 minutes. No problem... you can do it! Oh yeah... thank you!

    my old 12-point 14mm sockets were too loose on the lock and would not bite and the only 6-point I could find in my toolbox was 1/4" drive. I found success with a 9/16" 6-point socket and was still able to pry the lock out of the socket when I was done. Thanks for saving me a bunch of time and money!

    Great video, this just helped me get the tire down on my 2011 Superduty. Only difference was the socket size, after pounding on the 14mm and 3 foot extension for a few swings it didn't go on. I checked the face of the socket and could see I needed a bigger one, ended up using a 17mm socket. Everything else worked as you suggested it would. At the end I threw the lock and key in the garbage and left with the regular crank same as the jack.

    This is genius thank you! Just spent an hour with my arm between the frame and the bed trying to pry off the key with some channel locks on a 2010. Will try this now.
    I removed the key a while ago on another truck. They hooked end of the winch rod will fit right in after. The easiest way to do this is to remove the winch (two self tapping bolts) and knock it out with a hammer. I also like to fill the winch mechanism with some kind of rust proofer/ lube (white lithium/ fluid film/ etc).

    That was a good video, to the point, likeable guy and you made it look easy . I’ve been trying for a couple days to do this- I’ve heard use a 9/16 socket, a 14 mm socket and the latest was a 17 mm socket. Around the security part of the hoist mechanism on mine is a plastic or rubber housing that so far has prevented me from being able to pound a socket over it. Tried cutting the spring underneath with a grinder and no bueno. Mine has some kind of indestructible part in the center. Story of my life- every time I find a video that makes it look easy, my setup is just a little bit different. I wish I had a gun that’s barrel fit in the hole -

    So this is the second video I found on how to remove the lock, the first recommended one at about 2/3rds the way through mentions that "If the spare tire is on the carrier you will first have to figure out a way to get it down to remove the lock" Well that was a "FAIL" video and a complete waste of time. Then off to the side I saw your video and clicked on it. Very very helpful clue about the 14mm socket!!!! Grabbed a cheap 12 point 14mm socket and one of my very long locking extensions and "viola" ! Lock removed in just a few seconds! Problem perfectly solved! Ironically, I am going on a road trip tomorrow with my "new to me" F250 SD and just wanted to check the spare! Thanks again!!😁😁😁😁

    This is a super video. I watched another earlier of someone cutting the spring. I will say that I tried alot of times and almost gave up until I read the comments and found that the 17mm socket was the one that worked for me. Thank you Ron and all those that commented. Only thing I purchased was a cheap 24inch socket extension from harbor freight. Again, thanks. GREAT video.

    2017 Superduty didn't have a security key but the spare tire was in the bed. After watching the video i was able to just crawl under, remove the plastic tube/guide, pop the security bit out with a screwdriver and replace the tube/guide. Finally got the spare in the stock position on the winch now and can use the regular jack equipment to drop/raise the tire. Took 15 mintues maybe from start to tire in place and tools away. 👍

    Just because I want everyone to know. I tried it with a 14mm but mine was apparently too good. Didn't expand. Looking around I saw a piece of 1/2 inch metal electrical conduit and slid that in there. Went right on with a tap or two but would not bring the tire down. Enter Gorilla Super Glue Gel. Ran a little bead around the inside of the conduit, slid it on there and went and got a beer. Came back out, yanked on the conduit and there was the key, no muss, no fuss. Now I can use the standard spare crank no problem. No need to crawl under the truck, no need to remove anything, just glue and go. Love it.

    Thanks for the help! Great video! I couldn't get the 14mm on, so I tried the 9/16"(from the comments) and it worked great. I could lower the spare on my new to me 2005 F350 and take off the anti-theft device. I also got rid of a rattle that has been bugging me, a large rock was on top of the wheel bouncing around while driving :-)

  • @louissparks2496
    @louissparks2496 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Used the same 14-mm-socket trick on my 2002 F150. It was surprisingly easy to hammer on, and once on, the handle cranked the tire down with no problems. My problem arose when I stuck the anti theft thingy onto the crank and stuck it in at the wrong place. It fell onto the spare's wheel. Got rid of the hoist part of the anti-theft system using vise-grips.

    This does work, the issue I had was I never had a soft 14mm but I was able to pound a 9/16" socket over it. I just finished, it only took me about 15 minutes and now I can use the jack handle without the dumb key.

    Great solution, it took a 17 mm socket for my 2011 F-250 Super Duty crew cab. I started with the 14 mm. The lock pattern is basically Square when I shine the light on it. So I think that's the reason it took a larger one. But when I found the right one it worked like a charm. Thanks

    It worked but not as advertised. I couldn’t get the cheap 14 mm socket to seat on the lock. So I cut up a rubber band on put it in the socket. I got it to bite and turned the socket to my surprise the lock broke at the stem of the lock and was in my socket. I thought oh crap part of it is blocking the opening. I tried the truck supplied crank anyways and it worked fine. So I didn’t bother removing the plastic sleeve. Thank you! Totally cost to me $10 for a 24 inch socket extender

    Thanks so much for this video, I was having the same exact problem with this with my 2003 f150. Took a couple of tries but I finally got it with a 17mm socket to lower my spare tire, so many rust chips. Then I got the spare key tire lock off with a flat head screw driver just like in the video, but my 17mm socket came off first then I got the lock off afterwards. Took about 45 minutes for me, my neck is a little sore though. For those of you who have an early 2000s f150 try using 14mm-17mm sockets.
