People shrugging off serious calibers like 357 Magnum are the exception, not the rule. If you find yourself facing down a leather and denim armored WWE alumni on meth that can't be stopped by a center mass double tap, you were just as likely to encounter other scenarios that a gun couldn't rectify, like receiving a crashed Cessna in your attic.

      The overwhelming majority of incapacitations are psychological. Simply the awareness, or even a perception of having been shot, is enough to stop most people. For those who are not psychologically incapacitated, multiple hits are often needed and often the recipient has to be manually restrained. There is of course, the infamous Platt and Matix incident, but there are numerous others, including a shooting we got a bulletin on, a few years back, where a suspect took a total of 14 rounds(I think?) of Hornady TAP 556 and 180gr 40S&W Gold Dots, while returning some 40 rounds of 45 ACP from a single stack, one mag and box of loose rounds and still had to be fought into handcuffs by 4 officers. Drugs were not a factor.
      Just think of it this way, are *you* going to quit because you got shot?

      They're grossly over rated. Modern semi autos are the order of the day. Not to completely discount the lever, it is still quite capable, but it is in no way equal to modern semi autos. the down sides include:
      Lack of of low light sights and/or light attachment.
      Inability to be used one handed with any level of speed.
      Difficult to load, more so one handed
      Limited capacity
      Slow follow up shots

      agreed. I also think he could have gone through the course a whole bunch quicker than he did, I know I could jam 3 rounds into a lever action and fire them in time and so could he.
      as an example of a lever action gun on a modern combat course this video was very good. I think he took his time to show things clearly, and I think it only served to make his point more solidly. I also think it makes the point that anti gun folks are just raving against the one firearm that scares and intimidates them the most, the 'assault rifle'. but the assault rifle has come in many forms over the years lever action is one of many.
      do that course with a #4 enfield. I bet you can!

    In addition to this: one little advantage the lever action has OVER the AR15 semi auto is that you can top off your ammo inside the tube magazine by inserting extra cartridges manually without having to sacrifice ammo still in the magazine and without taking your rifle out of action while reloading.

    • @DrewEdwardBacklas
      @DrewEdwardBacklas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      ClassicGunsToday ClassicGunsToday in the amount of time it takes to put one cartridge in a lever gun you can top off with a 30 round mag in an AR15... I see zero advantage.

    • @urmominabox87
      @urmominabox87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DrewEdwardBacklas the advantage is that you retain the rounds in the magazine vs a tac reload where you are losing the rounds left in the partially emptied magazine. If you have the time and the cover to retain the partially expended magazine then the advantage the OP is illistrating is lost.

    • @DrewEdwardBacklas
      @DrewEdwardBacklas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      urmominabox87 So I’ve got this straight... we are imagining a scenario in which you are in a gun fight using a lever action rifle and you are standing in the open instead of fighting from cover and you decide that your going to top off the rounds in the magazine tube while there is still ammunition in the gun. You have enough time to retrieve and feed individual cartridges into the gun and you choose to do this while still standing in the open and not in cover and because you have held on to the 4 or 5 cartridges in the mag tube you see an advantage over the AR 15? I would contend that the average shooter could top off an ar15 with a fresh mag and retain the partial mag in a pocket faster than feeding one round into a lever gun.

    • @urmominabox87
      @urmominabox87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      DrewEdwardBacklas hat bud I'm just playing devil's advocate, and that main advantage isn't one of time its one of retaining rounds in the gun and on your person. No where did I suggest the complete disregard of tactics that you suggest. And the fact remains that in a dynamic situation you'll find yourself in a position where you can't or just don't retain the partially expended magazine, and you are no longer in physical possession of that ammunition. Can an AR-15 run circles around a lever gun? Yes, but this is a thought experiment where you work with what you got and make the best of it.

    • @classicgunstoday1972
      @classicgunstoday1972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      DrewEdwardBacklas as you were told, you can retain rounds without giving anything up while inserting extra and still have your gun ready for action at the same time. Yeah, you could drop a magazine from an AR, insert another one in and pick up the dropped magazine but that is 3 different things you are trying to do at three different times and your gun, at some point, not ready to shoot.
      A million different scenarios can happen either stationary, on the move, open space, under cover, etc. and an AR would certainly be more than ideal over a lever action in the jungles of Vietnam or Deserts of the middle east fighting unpronounceable factions numbering in the hundreds with AKs (even though not THE ideal...no select fire on AR).
      But that is one little advantage the lever action has in spite of all the AR advantages.

      I really like my lever action rifles and carbines. Push come to shove they could still provide reasonable performance as a patrol rifle. It's at least something that could be rectified with additional practice. You could see during that round that he was having some issues remembering what he was supposed to do; this is understandable, considering that single loading like that is not typical for lever gun operation.
      All that said, a semi-auto with a detachable magazine would still be better, but as the gents over at InRangeTV would say, while lever guns may be obsolescent, they are not obsolete.

  • @Predalien195
    @Predalien195 5 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    I truly dont see a lever action as being any worse than something like a pump action with 5 or shot shots. Perhaps not quite as versatile as a 12 gauge, nor as powerful as maybe a 12 gauge slug, but a .357, .44 Magnum, .41 Magnum, and even .327 Federal Magnum from a lever action are all quite capable in their own rights. And not just for law enforcement use, but even for the civilian side of things. Most lever actions are ban state friendly so no stupid laws about what you can/cant have, and many of said calibers are perfectly adequate for all size game in North America with a well placed shot from the right distance.
    It's unlikely you'll have to deal with multiple armed home invaders, although in some states and cities it is on the rise, it's still not very likely to happen. So 8 or 10 shots in a lever action should be plenty to deal with whatever threat you may have. Some study on the subject has shown too when people have fewer rounds to work with they seem to make the most of them as well. Reload times will be the biggest problem, and depending on what brand of lever action, certain types of ammo. I know a lot of Winchester 92 designs and even the Rossi copies dont like certain JHP's like Gold Dots and have feeding issues with them often, so that is another thing to be mindful of. As well as short stroking the lever when firing rapidly as I've had that be a problem and seen it be a problem for many others.
    Obviously modern carbines have for more advantages over a lever action but generally speaking a quality lever action is likely to serve any possible need you may have for a firearm. Take a .30-30 for example... In terms of ballistics it's similar to 7.62x39. Yes, it can be loaded up hotter and yes it also gets better performance using heavier bullets, but generally they are quite similar. So expect them to have the same results on a man. As for hunting, .30-30 has been slaying deer and hogs for over 100 years, it's easily capable of taking on black and brown bear with the right load, could take moose or caribou with a well placed shot and the right load(though I prefer other rounds for that task), it's still capable. As for plinking... while .30-30 isnt the cheapest round out there, it's widely available across the US from multiple companies so sourcing ammo shouldnt be too hard.
    So while something like an SKS or AK would be more economical and could deliver similar performance for the same roles, there's nothing wrong with the .30-30 either or any other lever action. It always makes me laugh a bit when these discussions come up... It's like people are trying to say these older platforms arent capable or deadly still. That's like saying the nukes we dropped on Japan arent lethal anymore because we have better ones.... It's still a nuke.

    One of the reasons that it can be still effective is that you don't need external magazines since it has an internal magazine tube. Just like a shotgun like the Remington 870, all you have to do is " top off" the magazine. I learned to do this with my Winchester 30-30, and keep a full magazine at all times. So yes it is quite effective in law enforcement, and personal defense. What is needed is to practice to gain and keep a high level of proficiency to gain effectiveness in combat, and hunting. The maxim holds true about know your equipment.

The full house rifled slugs were a bit of a challenge when fired off my left shoulder...but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it did. Excellent video. Great job on the carbine course. Did well on the reload stage in spite of not getting the last round off. The Marlin 1894 is a nice alternative to the scary black guns. Check out the Ruger Model 77/357 uses rotary magazine. I think of the Marlin 1894 as a modern ranch rifle. A Smith & Wesson Model 19 would complement the lever gun. My first firearm purchase three years ago was a lightly used 1992 Marlin 1894CS chambered in 357. I had to upgrade the shell carrier to the Marlin improved shell carrier as it was prone to Marlin jam. Installed Wild West Guns Trigger Happy. The gun is very reliable. Lots of fun to shoot and great gun to introduce new shooters to the sport. Thanks for taking the time to produce the videos.

    Great shooting Mr. Funk. Pistol caliber lever actions really are excellent. I need to pick up one before long, but I'm a Winchester man so it'll be a 92 for me.

      @@hrfunk Absolutely love it! Always wanted one but never able to find because they are always out of stock in my area. I am a fairly new gun owner so its perfect for me. I currently have the rio bravo in .22mag and R92 in .357 and very happy with both for the price. Looking forward to learn more and becoming accustomed to running lever action rifles.

      Very cool. They seem like great firearms, but I have no personal experience with them.

    I have that same rifle with a Skinner peep sight, I never doubted that you would be able to pass that course of fire.

    hrfunk. What is really interesting is that you achieved that despite rushing yourself unnecessarily (due to lack of practice and totally understandable on-camera nerves) causing that miss at the beginning and the third round reload, but with just a little more practice actually you would find plenty of time available to totally "own" that course of fire with that fine old lever design.Just a suggestion, maybe chambering one round and side loading the other 2 might prove quicker next time due to fewer hand movements? Anyhow this just shows what can be done. Great video!
