Historians have pointed out that the only connection between Gilles de Rais and Joan of Arc is that they happened to be in the same army along with thousands of other people; but the 15th century sources never mention the two of them doing anything together. They certainly didn't fight side-by-side since Joan said bluntly that she didn't fight at all; and we know the names of the people who belonged to her own group in the army and Gilles de Rais was not among them. Additionally, Gilles de Rais didn't begin killing children until after Joan's death.
