Too bad they always cheap out on some fairly important part but the whole concept of the car is so cool and useful within its limits. The LS engine would be a great combination and maybe not much worse on gas.
@@69Dartman I have the 5.3L LS XUV. Some say "but it's only 15-20 more horsepower" but the torque is like 50 pound-feet more than the inline 6, which, by the way, JR called a V6 in the first of his XUV vids in this series... That's before any LS mods.
I have a V8 SLT XUV! You can rebuild the rear actuators. Don't pay $250! There is a tiny motor and worm great that opens them and a spring that closes the latch. If you take them apart and clean the gears you can fix them. The rear handle switch also fail and can stay in the open position which is what is probably happening to you.
You should post a video of the rebuild of those actuators. The switch is also used on the Chevy HHR, I pulled a couple at local scrap yard to have as spares, 1.00 a piece.
I bought my XUV a few weeks before these videos started to be posted on TH-cam. All mine needed was a rear tailgate regulator, every latch and track cleaned and greased, and guage cluster repair. Mine is a 2004 SLT edition fully loaded with only 44k miles driven by an elderly couple. It was a once in a lifetime find and I love it!

Jr, want to say thank you. We've had our 04 XUV for about 15 years and love and hate it on a regular basis. Your video inspired this shady tree mechanic to take on the challenge. From part numbers to opps reconnect that wire "before" you were spot on. I'd like to share one spot of wisdom, I was VERY concerned about the glass slipping, my solution was using a shower suction cup handle to secure the glass in the fully closed position. Wish I knew how to share image here. Thanks again (great success after fixing the midgate sensor, but that's another story). 😊

I have replaced a few window regulators in my day. I use a medium/large (whatever you have) suction cup at the base of the glass to prevent it slamming down. OR on framed glass duct tape around the top works also.
I have to be honest John, I was really happy to see you struggle a bit with that regulator. It made me realize that you are human and have the same struggles as the rest of us.
This is when GM was doing some pretty innovative things in the truck/SUV market. While everyone looks at these as just a modified trailblazer/envoy, there is some awesome engineering present. I wish my Avalanche had that power rear glass, but then again it would be one more part to break! Keep up the great content!
Been there, done that. WE have a 2004 5.3L XUV bought brand new in 2004. Driving to Vegas (from SE Arizona) in 2007, going over Hoover Dam, in the middle of summer, the "electronically controlled fan clutch failed ($1000 repair but we had extended warranty back then...)I replaced the midgate regulator a few years ago and then not long after that, the tailgate regulator! I've replaced the damn airbag shocks (those were pretty easy), brakes, etc. We've had problems with the BLEND door actuators in the AC (not so easy but do-able), and a few weeks ago, the damn plastic shift linkage broke at an inopportune time. Well, it was a the plastic bushing thing that connects the gear shift lever to the linkage that connects to tranny. Dealer wanted $600 to fix it, and I laughed because I fixed it with the $2 plastic bushing... The pressing thing now for us is a jacked up sun roof regulator. I've had to replace the body control computer as well. The BOSE speakers blew out last year, had to replace those..... WE've owned this thing since it has 12 miles on it, and if it wasn't for the fact that it is a V8, still has less than 90K original miles, I'd have gotten rid of it a long time ago. It's just a prime example of GM's shitty overcomplex design.
Thank you for this video. I have a 2004 envoy XUV and I have the same issue. Also, the tailgate is a pain in my arse!! Sometimes it will open, sometimes it won’t. I can get it to flip down, only open outwards. This has definitely been a frustrating vehicle, but it runs smooth. Oh, and when I’m at a stop won’t the AC on, it sounds like the dash rattles, who knows. I wish I knew everything so it would make it easier
You got that new regulator in with far fewer 4 letter words than I would have! I kept waiting on that glass to burst into a thousand pieces like it would have if I was working on it.

I bought one of these trucks last year to flip and my back roof didn’t open either and I was having a lot of problems with the back door I replaced the window regulator after that everything started working didn’t have to replace any hinges or locks the roof retracted the glass work perfect before you replace hinges try the window regulator got it off Amazon it was like 120 bucks great deal!!
I would grease the track its self thatll make a huge difference in how quick and smooth it will run you can use silicone or white Lithium it will make a world of difference
The black JB plastic epoxy has repaired over half the interior panels on my 94 Grand AM. Very few parts cars remain, as most where offered up for cash for clunkers mess.

I use paint mixing containers at car then put bolts into a tackle box containers with the seperate containers. Then i put tape on the lid and write down where the bolts came from in each section
The switch you glued to fit on the tab- I replaced everything and the window works now ( great video!) but for the life of me can’t find the tab to put my switch to, don’t know if it broke off or what. Can you tell me where it attaches? Thanks, Bart
Challenge I ran into was the mount for the sensor on the new regulator is the wrong size. My son and I had to shave it down from about 820 to 700 or something thousands of an inch, then secured with wire. Works great now.
Incredibly I found the regulator on rockauto. Look carefully in the regular envoy listing. Regulator and motor assembly, ACI branded 160, OE 275. At least they have them at all.

YA , this thing was just way ahead of it's time. I envision a time when you buy essentially an electric chassis. Then you go to the local dealer rental place. Maybe you have a coupe bolted on your chassis, but you need to do some hauling. Go to your dealer and 8 bolts later you have a pickup bolted to your electric chassis !
Amazon sell for 125. And the tailgate for 99. The most expensive part for the rear of the XUV is the body control module in the tale gate door. Shops are selling for up to $400. GM even changed the part number so you'd have to cross reference it. It controls the roof, back glass, and keyless entry.
use spray silicone on the side track above the window to extend life. It sounds like its struggling to open. There is a dry silicone you can get it works great.
Regulators are easier to change if you buy the regulater motor combo and replace both the motor and regulator So JR did it it unintentionally right buying the combo
I love these too but some day, I'm gonna' have an Avalanche/Esky EXT just for this reason: it's all manual to open/close the mid gate. And they made zillions of each.
JR wants us to buy his merch, but he never seems to wear any of it in his videos. He should take a look at Goonzquad, now they know how to promote their merch.
J.R. I think this is one you should keep. You know if you get it 100% as rare as it is you should be able to get a nice little profit on it. Me personally, am not a GM fan but this is really unique. Hell, you may want to even keep it when you get it nice. I would.
I actually learned to repair regulators watching a old watch Jr go flip video it got me to buy the tools and search for videos on the specific car I am repairing I do the window repairs now on friends and family cars I have them buy the regulator and motor assembly so I have everything needed.
Waiting for a sudden spider to appear were you? I prefer drills to impacts for most things. Just have more experience using drills. I'm always worried an impact will get something too tight in my hands

Reminds me of the rear shocks on my old 97 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC. $350 a side, not including shipping or installation. For my 1995 Ford Thunderbird LX...it was $50 each installed. Yeah, rare parts. Damn Ford for putting a stupid schrader valve into the rear shocks for the air ride. I miss those two cars.
this would be the perfect junk yard hunting expedition in a city like Denver where there are about 4 pull yards one would find the tailgate and sunroof parts if one is patient. It sucks that regulars like this brake all the time. I think the pulley type regulators in a lot of newer model Chrysler and Chevy suck vs the older gear type regulators. Gear type regulators which mimic the old hand turned window cranks are much more reliable. since you saw where the the plastic tab holding the cable broke free why not add extra epoxy putty to that plastic part to make it stronger so it does not brake in the future. I would fix sun roofs and see often there is some piece that brakes in the model you are replacing and just reinforce that piece of plastic in the replacement sunroof before putting it in. So try not to have a problem recur over and over every few years.
I like how thorough and in-depth you are with some of your diagnostics. you really are just regular guy but you show how just a regular guy can do a lot of stuff that regular guys think they can't do. I believe that is why I watch your videos
I’m pretty sure that every one of those XUV’s I ever worked on at the dealership needed at least one of those regulators. The part that makes the vehicle unique is the most failure prone. It is a large piece of glass that the regulator has to move though.
We had a decent little rv with solar and batteries with a huge propane generator that we would take to the bottom basement floor of the local park and deck when big storms came the kids liked it because we still had all our creature comforts and we were safe
Yup they wanted $360 for the drivers side and $240 for the passagers side window switches cuz they short out if you leave the window open when it rains so I fixed it with a $5.99 marine grade water proof DPDT switch

It sure would be nice if the window went all the way down and the tailgate released with just a press of that release button. Would be reminiscent of the old GM clamshell station wagons from the 70’s.

Even though I hated a demo Trailblazer my mother had back then, I wanted one of these Envoys so bad. I still like the idea of enclosed bed that can be opened to the interior for dogs and such. But I can’t imagine wanting to use one of these over my Flex or even my Niro at this point. I’d rather just have more trucks with a full width rear power window like the Tundra.
I just found one of those Envoy XUV near my city for $5500 it seems to be the top tear because it has leather seats, but I think I can find it cheaper, the normal Envoy and Trail Blazer are so cheap
While I do agree, when it comes to really strange parts like this, Dorman is often the ONLY company still making it. Past couple years they've gotten better

You may want to lube the tracks and felt with a Silicone Grease. It should improve the speed of the window going up and down.
Definitely should be part of any thorough window regulator replacement.
Regular silicone spray works too.

I don't even like those things, but builds/repairs like these are fascinating. I got my oddball car fix with my old Baja turbo 5mt.

Mine had front end work needed. Ball joints, tie rods. I have a constant OBD II error of Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. But it still works ok.

We had a decent little rv with solar and batteries with a huge propane generator that we would take to the bottom basement floor of the local park and deck when big storms came the kids liked it because we still had all our creature comforts and we were safe

Yup they wanted $360 for the drivers side and $240 for the passagers side window switches cuz they short out if you leave the window open when it rains so I fixed it with a $5.99 marine grade water proof DPDT switch
Have one of these. Have this exact issue. Can't be bothered to fix it. Tho my tail gate has issues that need to be dealt with.

It sure would be nice if the window went all the way down and the tailgate released with just a press of that release button. Would be reminiscent of the old GM clamshell station wagons from the 70’s.
Use wedges to hold up the glass to keep window from sliding it down.
I still remember watching the commercial of these with the tree in the back sticking out the opened rear hatch and thinking man that thing is cool haha

Even though I hated a demo Trailblazer my mother had back then, I wanted one of these Envoys so bad. I still like the idea of enclosed bed that can be opened to the interior for dogs and such. But I can’t imagine wanting to use one of these over my Flex or even my Niro at this point. I’d rather just have more trucks with a full width rear power window like the Tundra.

I just found one of those Envoy XUV near my city for $5500 it seems to be the top tear because it has leather seats, but I think I can find it cheaper, the normal Envoy and Trail Blazer are so cheap

While I do agree, when it comes to really strange parts like this, Dorman is often the ONLY company still making it. Past couple years they've gotten better
