Stippling is an ol' reliable of vehicle painting, nice to see it used on characters too. Might be a fun idea to do a "Painting a tank like a character VS painting a character like a tank" video!
Just love love love seeing older HC videos resurfacing with different application with different models. Super fun video. I keep getting more and more inspired to my own FEC.
Perfect! I’ll be painting a Chimeras wings with this technique now. It made me feel much more confident about painting such a large surface area which I’d been dreading after building the model and basing it a while ago! Funny how these things make you nervous. Cheers Vincey V!
Oh man I just had the funnest time using this video’s colors and techniques to paint a Bat swarm in cursed Cursed City! Less than 30 minutes and it looks like one of the best smaller minis I’ve ever painted! Thank you for the skill unlock Vince!
I sourced some old 1997 Dark Elf Harpies to run in a Beastmen army for TOW, finally stepping in to the physical hobby. This video is perfect for the direction I'd hope to take them in. As ever, some of the most usable painting content out there. Thank you for what you do!
Thanks for sharing the process.. It was cool to see how excited you got to show off the dry brush stippling in the 2nd half of the video lol. Your videos are always so helpful!
I followed your grim dark terminator video and found the stippling to be super freeing! I used it on my tyranid carapaces and then hit them with a speedpaint to create a cool effect. My new favorite technique.
Great timing. Have just painted a cryptguard and experimented to get a dead flesh appearance. Turned out a yellow green over a purple base. Like the grey green on your model so I might play around with that. As always, thanks for all your efforts in improving the hobby.
While I lack a "cool flying bat guy", and I would use different colors, I do have a Shadows of Brimstone Harbinger and some Middle Earth Nazgul that have large bat like wings these techniques will be perfect on them. And I just got a set of similar drybrushes!!! Thanks Vince!!! Can't wait to get stabby with some minis!!!
May look at the wing technique on my flesh eaters. Completely unrelated note thank you for these, paint, and part painted my first 2 minis with oils two weeks ago and am keen to experiment further. Just wanted to say your inspiration is appreciated
As soon as I saw that green and purple I was instantly reminded of James Wappel's "Radiant grey" - a mix of radiant green and violet. Same concept and reinforces my thoughts about using that colour on my own boys. Building on that, could you apply similar tactics for doing pale green skinned ghouls? More green, reserved purple for highlights for that near grey? If so, would a deeper green work as a quick and dirty shadow for the underside? Nobody will ever see under little ghouls, so I'm thinking lazy darker green, blend the edges with the lit part and move on with my day
I'd love to see you do a high gloss blinged out paint on something! Speaking of bling, I watched Squidmar's video on the best gold, and my retributor armor painted models don't look like the one in his video. His looks like a deeper yellow than mine. I'm using the H&S ultra 2024 and thinning with Tamiya X20A.
Your advice has been great on this but for some reason my eyes can't see grey tones or silver metalics that easy. Its why I default to non-metal metallic painting now because its easier for me. I keep trying with Vallejo Metal Color like you recommend but I have to mix in some other colors to see the greys transitioning darker or lighter or I have to keep taking pictures and using a black/white filter otherwise. I can see the difference between gun metal and silver in that set for example but not between two that are close together. It doesn't relate to ghoul skin, but I appreciate your advice, its helped me to use grey-scale now a lot easier without computer assistance.
Hope u r good mate If u where using this for possessed marines what colour would u say was best for armour to make it stand out the best great vid thank u 👍👍👍👍
Vince, I have been loving your series. Your videos are straight forward and all about the subject and not trying to impress me with your production quality, accent or goofiness. I was wondering if you can suggest alternatives to the dark plum and burgundy within the fanatic range.
@@VinceVenturella ah, I was look at the Diabolic plum and it looked a fair bit lighter than the dark plum. Thank you for the response, I will check them out. Looking forward to the vampire lord I am working on.
This may be my favorite undead skin you have shown! Do you think it would be possible to dry brush the layers vs traditional layering for this technique? And then glazing over the drybrush? Have about 3k pts of FEC I am trying to painted up relatively quickly. Thanks!
Well, cold blue is by it's nature less vibrant, because it has blue. That being said, blue violet from Vallejo or AK 3rd Gen are good, Cultist purple from AP is also good.
Thanks so much for showing this wing technique, i will definitely use this for my fel bats! I was having troubles with shading but an important thing that I see you do here is keeping a relatively bright value on the underside as well!!! kind of like light is passing through the membrane. Did you do deeper shadows on the underside or just keep it mostly the same steps/mixtures?
Wonderful vid as always Vince, I’m currently working on a red dragon miniature for D&D, and I’ve based the wings in a sort’ve desert yellow, sandy color to be a warm contrast to the dark red I based coated the scales, can you give any recommendations on how to use the same wing techniques here but on yellow skin?
hey vince, loved this tutorial. I see it as a continuation of the vampire flesh one you did with radukar. my question: do you recommend using any sort of glazing agent with paints when it comes to the glazing step or would you just thin down with water? I loved the additional tip of dabbing the glazed brush on a paper towel, I have more than once found my brush far to wet and ended up making a puddle on my model.
Having studied bat anatomy and taxidermy, the membrane between the fingers that make up the wings when stretched will lighten but is always the same color as the skin on the fingers/claws. Have you ever painted membrane wings like that? Also, veins line through the membrane. Is there any technique in that effect?
You are correct, we are being a little fantasy like here, they are stretched thin and so in the light can appear a lighter tone of the same color, but it all has skin over it. No reason you couldn't do the same thing and just vary the value.
Great video once again. Some many good tips. Many thanks! You finished the wings with a very thin glaze. What sort of ratio of water:paint did you use?
Fun video as always! I do have a question about the greens you used - I'm having trouble visualizing how I would mix those myself. My gut says green, plus purple (blue to cool, red to desaturate), then white to get the lighter green. But something about that doesn't seem like it would produce those two colors. Any thoughts on how you'd mix those, or just how you'd do this recipe, if you didn't have those bottles?
Yes. I use different techniques on different elements depending on my goals, each suited to that particular purple. For pure speed, I will often alter, but you could build to high quailty through this.
Vince, how do we get a shot at like a private review/suggestion session? I'm very close to being an Ork IRL but I am not where I want to be in getting the muscle tones right; honestly I'd like to get a gretchin done to about the quality you got the model here...
Question don´t know if you already have made such a video. But if not would it be possible you could make one about making warm colors read as cold colors to the eye and vice versa. Ala how would you make yellow, orange, and red read as cold and violet green and blue read as warm. Same with maybe neutral colors such as white, black, brown and grey.
@@VinceVenturella I have been watching all of your vampire videos, great videos btw, but no idea on what color scheme I should pick lol, want to paint her dress kinda like a red velvet.

Nearly 440 hobby cheating videos in, and you still give us a 2 for 1. Ever the inspiration. Now to go satisfy the urge to stab some miniatures.
Attack the miniature like it owes you money. - how do I get this on a t-shirt! 😂 love it!

Great video! Thank you for opting to not use the airbrush, certainly makes the video more accessible. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
Really love that skin and have a lot of vampires to paint
I'm going to try this on my tyranid gargoyles, who i'd previously been stumped on how to make their wings interesting. Thanks for the tips!
Glad I could help!

More to come!

Interesting stuff. For the skin you are progressively adding a higher value of the complementary colour of the dark plum.
This was a great learning experience….with multiple, techniques that make more sense than before. Your teaching style is superb and much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!

Painting a FEC army for a friend after Adepticon; so your timing is excellent. Definitely going to utilize what you showed here. Thanks!

My new favorite technique.
new hobbyist here, was really wondering how to figure out the wings on my hive tyrant, this is very helpful 🙂thank you

Thank you so much!
The Gorwarden is why i started a FEC army and bought the box set, iv also got a few k of soulblight to paint so this video's going to be helpful.
Ty 👍
Nice video! Definately gave me some ideas as how to proceed with my flesh eaters.

Nice use of the tinted green to neutralise such purple.
A lot of good information in this video. Thank you for putting this together!

Awesome Vince, my favorite topic
Love that skin including color theory. Thanks Vince!
You bet!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Like the stippling technique I’m going to see if I can apply it to dragon wings.
Great tutorial! I had problems figuring out how to make the wings more interesting with huge, flat areas.
Glad I could help!
Man that skintone is great for my Cursed city project!
Im going to do this for my winged Tyranids
Awesome video, love FEC. Larry is starting to feel neglected… ;)

Yep, that would certainly work.
Without realizing it at the time, I used stippling to create awesome camo patterns with a brush that look like an airbrush was used.
Thought of a topic. How to go about cleaning & dusting your miniatures?

Not sure, I don't like Retributor armor, I find it very orange and cheesy.

Sure, if you were doing a whole force, you could do this with a soft drybrush effect. But you'd need to be alittle careful. :)
Oh great and wise technomancer, I'm looking for a vibrant cold purple. What would you recommend?
Well, cold blue is by it's nature less vibrant, because it has blue. That being said, blue violet from Vallejo or AK 3rd Gen are good, Cultist purple from AP is also good.

Same stuff, go from a deep yello brown or deep ochre up to a sunny, eggy yellow.

In this case, I just used water, but thinner medium can help if you're not as comfortable with glazing.

Hard to say exactly, probably something like 4 water to 1.
Sorry if i missed it. WHen you say glaze what is the typical dilution ratio you use?
It varies, each color and paint brand can be different, but just about 3-4 water to 1 drop of paint roughly.
Wish I'd seen this a month ago when I started my warden
