    Easy way to remember which way to turn the grinder setting: It works like any normal screw... Turn clockwise to tighten/finer, turn opposite to loosen/coarser.
    I found the printing on the knob to be lacking in that respect, though the numbers help getting you close to previous settings quickly...

    Great tips.
    If switching between espresso and french press every day becomes tiring, I think it makes sense to get a cheap grinder just for french press, like the Delonghi KG79. Coarser grind doesn't seem to require a great quality grinder. Then the Eureka can stay at espresso setting all the time.

      That’s my plan. I own a Bunn industrial grinder, and that will continue to be my ‘pot’ coffee grinder. The next few months will find me getting one of these grinders for espresso only, along with a single serving hopper-blower from Etsy

    • @darkim1777

      The better the grinder the less fines produced while grinding for pourover/immersion resulting in brighter and cleaner brew. So i have to disagree with your statement. Get the highest quality grinders for each (espresso and pourover) that you can afford

    • @aberreg
      @aberreg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkim1777 I use the KG79 for immersion and pourover, and am getting a very clean result - even with a french press, where you indeed do not want any fines.
      I would say the Delonghi is good enough for middle to coarse grind.
      Still, of course you remain correct: a better, more expensive grinder will produce better results. With diminishing returns/bucks, probably. I use a Eureka Mignon for espresso, but have to admit I never tried it for coarser grind.

    My Speciality zero has actually become the number 5 position (clockwise from the 0 position). espresso range is somewhere delicately between slightly before and just after the 0 spot. Shot times are extremely long, over 1 minute, but the taste is good. Anything in the 27 to 30 second range tastes very sour. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Using a QM Pathfinder and a Flair 58. The 58 helped confirm that temperature wasn't the problem.

    Hi there! 😊☕️ I absolutely love your TH-cam channel, it has been super helpful for me and growing my “home barista” skills! I wanted to reach out to ask a couple questions about grind size for beans. I can’t seem to figure out the issue. I have the Eureka Mignon Silenzio grinder and order freshly roasted beans from local Coava coffee roasters. However, when I grind the beans they are grinding in a way that produces almost like sawdust particles where it spits out onto the counter and I end up with a watery/light shot even though my espresso grind is on the finest setting. I can’t figure out if my grind is too fine or too coarse, because when I make it more coarse it’s even worse... PLEASE HELP! 😂😫

      @clivecoffee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Julie! This sounds curious. It would be great to know the espresso machine, basket type, and recipe (dose, output, time) you're using to help rule out some of the more common causes of funky shots like this. From there, we should able to zero in on the issue!

      Clive Coffee Hey Charles! Wow, thank you so much for the prompt response! So I actually have the Rocket Apartmento and use the double basket with the double spout. I’m wondering if the issue is perhaps not resetting the grind size correctly after adding new beans causing the shoot of the grinder to perhaps jam improperly? I use it manually not timed as well. I’m so bad, I don’t actually have a solid recipe that I use but would LOVE recommendations on how to come up with a solid/consistent one! Another issue I have is when grinding no matter what I end up with lots of the grinds getting on the counter. Is there a way to prevent that?

    • @clivecoffee
      @clivecoffee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julieyablonsky1574 Gotcha. I have two recommendations right off the bat. First, watch out video on how to pull the perfect shot of espresso (linked below). It'll outline our standard recipe and get you on the right track. Second, using a scale to weigh your dose and output will significantly improve your shots and make them far more consistent. Frankly, without weighted measurements, it's somewhat difficult for us to give helpful recommendations. Something that weighs down to 1/10th of a gram is preferable. I've linked our most affordable option below.
      As for the grinder making a mess, that's generally a result of static which is more common when using darker roasted coffees. If you fill your hopper there isn't too much that can be done about this. If you single dose (keep the hopper empty and grind just one shot's worth at a time) you can use something called the Ross Droplet Technique to reduce static. I've linked our video on that below.
      Hopefully, some or all of this helps!

    Thanks for the great video! Some thoughts and questions...
    I have the previous generation of the Mignon. While I love it, it’s worth nothing that if you’re not grinding while adjusting the dial, especially when adjusting finer - IT WILL JAM. Is that not an issue with the newer models? Your adjustments here don’t appear to show the grinder is running. Just curious.
    My feeling is after working with the Mignon for a year plus, if you like to switch between different beans frequently, you’re probably better off with a Vario, or a grinder where you can clearly note your grind setting to match the specific beans your using. You tend to waste a lot of bean, regardless of any notation of setting.
    Lastly, the screen that is by the shoot, it’s my understanding that’s what helps prevent the clumping the previous model suffers from. Can this screen be added to the previous model?
    Thanks!

    • @clivecoffee
      @clivecoffee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! For starters: The new Mignon espresso grinders are far tougher than their predecessor. When we got them in we were absurdly rough on them, adjusting very coarse, making a huge adjustment finer, and then grinding. We were astonished at how hard it was to jam these things. While we still recommend exercising caution you can certainly trust them to be forgiving. As far as I'm concerned, the new Mignon series should have gotten a new name as, despite similarities in aesthetics and specs, they're an entirely different animal when it comes to performance.
      The screen is definitely a key component in making sure the grounds are fluffy but it is not adaptable to the original Mignon.

    • @clivecoffee

      In our eyes, the minor price increase for the Silenzio is well worth it for two key reasons. First, it's nearly silent, quieter than almost any other grinder out there, which we love. Second, you get the convenience timed dosing, which is really handy. For those two reasons, we selected the Silenzio as our entry level Mignon espresso grinder.

      You can use a can of air and I've done so on many occasions. I have two recommendations based on experience:
      1. If at all possible, do it outside, haha
      2. Most canned air uses some form of bitterant as a way to deter children from doing anything dangerous with it. While harmless, it's possible that this could end up on your burrs and contribute some bitter flavors to your coffee. Grinding a few grams of beans should get rid of any residue. Since there are a myriad of variables when pulling shots it's tough to nail down one thing that could be the issue. If you're using a lower dose amount, that would result in a finer grind necessary for that specific recipe. Typically there is about 5-6 numbers between a standard espresso setting and the point at which the burrs will touch. Hope this helps! If you're still having issues I'd recommend reaching out to your original vendor as well.

      I know it's been a year, so you must have made your choice by now. Looking around online, the Sette has a plastic gearbox which wears out quickly. Easy enough to replace, but you'll be doing it way more often than you would want to, considering the price. I've just upgraded and went with Eureka (the Specialita). Though I love the design, the lack of retention and the features of the Sette, that gearbox issue was a deal-breaker. Hope you're happy with what you got!

    • @clivecoffee
      @clivecoffee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is possible but generally, this won't result in damage unless done in a truly excessive way. You'll be able to hear when they touch - it sounds like a light metallic scraping noise. Burrs are designed such that the surfaces which can touch are already ground smooth, with the cutting edges being slightly recessed.
      In short: don't worry about it, and if you hear a sudden surprising noise just turn the knob back a bit.

    • @clivecoffee
      @clivecoffee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more important you get the dose you want than how long it takes to grind. If you use 18g, how many seconds does it take to pull your shot? We recommend aiming for somewhere between 27g and 36g of espresso out with an 18g dose. You should be somewhere around 30ish seconds (as a good starting point). From there, you can decide if you want to grind finer, coarser, or change your dose.

    This might seem like a weird question but, if the grind adjustment knob is turned too far on either side, could it damage the grinder?

    • @clivecoffee
      @clivecoffee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the grind adjustment knob is turned too fine it may cause the burrs to touch. This is unlikely to cause damage and you'll immediately hear a buzzing sound that will alert you to the issue, at which point you should adjust coarser. Adjusting too coarse will never cause damage.

      @@clivecoffee Hey Charles! I was wondering if these would need cleaning tablets when switching coffee beans or just monthly maintenance? If so, which ones would you recommend?

    • @clivecoffee
      @clivecoffee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ishiie14 For grinder cleaning tablets I recommend Grindz: clivecoffee.com/products/urnex-grindz-grinder-cleaner
      It's not entirely necessary to use these when switching coffees. For that, I would just grind a fair amount of the new coffee to flush out the old grounds. 10-20g will suffice.
      How often you should use them (or manually clean your grinder) depends a bit on the type of coffee you use. If you use lighter roast coffees you can easily go months without finding any buildup inside the grinder. With dark roasted beans you'll notice buildup within weeks. Using them at 2-month intervals should be reasonable for just about any coffee, but feel free to adjust according to your experience.

    Really tricky to adjust mine right for aeropress, honestly I've rarely gotten a good grind out of my eureka mignon compared to the much cheaper baratza encore, it's been a disappointing year and a half or more that I've owned this. Maybe I just move my settings too far, I've never contacted eureka about it maybe I had defective burrs who knows but I've been a constantly dissatisfied person

      Typically when a Mignon reaches the point where the burrs are about to touch, it an extremely fine consistency which is suitable for a wide variety of coffee. If you are still seeing fast shots at this setting, then I'd look at the age of the coffee being used. Does it a roast date on the bag?

      For a double shot/double basket you'll want to use about 18g of coffee and a yield anywhere between 18g and 36g is acceptable. The precise yield and shot time to target mainly comes down to personal taste. You might find this video helpful
