Can't wait for part 2!!! Real quick heres a few quick things: BC, NR is a group from brixton, just like black midi. They're all friends and reference each other a lot, along with other groups like jerskin fendrix and squid. Jerskin fendrix is the most unique one of the group, combining emotional ballads with ambient music, pc music, and all sorts of stuff. I think his album winterrise is ABSOLUTELY worth a listen, I legitimately think you'd love it. If you feel like doing a track review, narrator by squid is similar to what these guys do and is an absolutely nutty song. Highly reccomend! In the lyric, isaac wood said "as the world's SECOND best slint tribute act" implying that black midi is better lol Edit: also the order for the second half is sunglasses, track x, and opus, so you might have heard them out of order
black country is an area in the england west midlands that ended up very polluted during the industrial revolution, so i think science fair is the digital revolution described through a anxiety breakdown. in the lyrics he uses a self referential approach and metafiction (used in post modern fiction) wich fractures fiction with reality. and the climax is haunted by the words "its black country out there" the digital space is poluted. i think the whole thing is very well crafted and delivered, it is of its time and musically is great, first time i heard it i was hooked to the end.
so glad you ended up doing a video on this one! Also super worth checking out the single versions of Sunglasses and Athens, France because they are actually different from the versions that ended up on the album. The sunglasses OG version is a lot more disconcerting and intensely emotional so I'm a little disappointed they pulled it back a bit for the album version but still an incredible debut!
If you haven't yet I *highly* recommend checking out their live set BC,NR Independent Venue Week 2019. There's some tracks in there that didn't make the cut for this album but that are of equal quality, and that version of Sunglasses has some lyrical differences that imho make for a much more raw version of the song
I think the whole “black midi” sound is just a product of all these bands being from relatively the same area and also playing with each other very frequently. Another band called Dry Cleaning has a vocalist that has a very distinct spoken word delivery and they’re from the same area as well I think

The "spoken word" delivery reads to me as post-punk/new wave, talking heads-ish
