Hello 17 years old Turkish teenanger here. I wanted to express my feelings about this sad story. I hope you can tolarete my English,if you can't it is okey have good day There are two breaking points in history for Turkish people . One of them is Gallipoli Campaing in WW1 and Battle of Sakarya in Turkish War of İndepence. Because these events brought very divided nation together and created camaraderie. Gallipoli is probably most important thing in our history because its our only great, decisive victory againts huge alliance of enemies since 1683 Siege of Vienna. İf you erase Gallipoli Campaing from history, you dont have Turkey. So it is a very big deal for us, also we suffered so many casualities, many of high schools didn't have graduations. İf i am not mistaken there was an high school lost all of their seniors in Gallipoli and there is more many of the generals,politicians,experienced soldiers rose in Gallipoli like our founding father Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He changed the course of the campaign time and time again and probably most iconic is when he halted ANZAC advance at 25th April 1915. He became a national hero after the campaing. Yes, we don't see Anzacs bitter enemies. They are most dear to our hearts, at least mine. From our perspective our sacrifice had a reason, those young Turkish boys,fathers,brothers,husbands they died for the homeland. Kurdish,greek,arab,turk their sacrificed themselves for the good of their families. This was our Verdun, for Anzac's it was a tragedy, they died thousand miles away for from their country, their death was unnecessery and we know that, Atatürk know that so he told this amazing quote. I can talk about this war for hours with tears in my eyes.Last thing i wanna say is, i have huge respect for those guys, i am around same age and i can't imagine what they have gone through.That is why we call them '' Honorable Enemy'' All my respect goes to our Australian and New Zealander friends and dont worry we protect Johnnies like Atatürk said.

Calling it your verdun is apropos. The British navy landed on the wrong beach at the very start. The Turks had the lay of the land especially defending a peninsula from hillsides looking down on an open beach. Once you lost surprise, it would be very hard for the Anzac’s to ram through. Think if at d-day the Germans rather than expecting invasion at Calais were en masse defending Normandy instead? The surprise landing was the difference. This why Churchill was against this becoming a army operation. Yes the British and French navies suffered from mines but Churchill rightly believed imho that the navies could bash through the mine infested waters once they cleared them. He even thought of sacrificing old relics and send up the straits to engage the mines. The Turks turned out to be very good at moving their artillery around the peninsula. When Kitchener relieved command, new general Munro opined that the position was hopeless. The brits were probably more afraid of casualties evacuating the area than staying out. I believed that either through superb subterfuge or tacit agreement, the allies pulled out without a single casualty. A far different treatment was delivered to general Townsend at kut. But Gallipoli was supposed to be a quick strike that turned into another quagmire.

I am Turkish and My high school (and all male high schools in Istanbul) did not have any graduates in 1915 because of this. All the seniors went to Gallipoli that year.

I think one of the most beautiful things about Sabaton is that in the modern day we've lost the traditions of singing songs of glory to honor the fallen. Many of those that died in that battle likely held onto the hope that one day songs would be sung about it.
Sabaton is carrying on an ancient tradition that keeps those hopes alive.

Few battles beyond the Battle of Gallipoli come to mind where both sides formed a kinship and brotherly respect that now has lasted generations. Respect to the Anzac and Turkish heroes who bled and died on the sands of Gallipoli.

My parents used to live in Turkey, which is where I first learned about Gallipoli. The thing that really stuck with me was the deep and abiding respect of the Turkish people for the soldiers who lost their lives in that battle...regardless of where they were from.
It's an old tradition, it seems. Saladin had the same policy.
Very sad story, another very sad story about ww1 is the battle of paschendale. Sabaton made an awesome performance of that in woodstock, highly recommended! It’s called ”The price of a mile”.
and do not to forget "Fields of Verdun". Here in Germany Verdun is a synonym for a pointless Battle and where thousands of soldiers were thrown into the meatgrinder just to gain a few more meter or miles on the Battlefield, which you will lose on the other day.

Thanks so much for doing this one. Interesting fact; Winston Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty at the time (basically the navy's representative in parliament) and was involved in planning the invasion. He resigned the position after the campaign's failure, though remained involved in both parliament and the military. The quote on the memorial is by Ataturk, who transformed Turkey into a modern republic as the Ottoman Empire collapsed in the aftermath of the war. The empire's collapse is a whole crazy topic that involves Britain and France trying to divide the rest of its its carcass and informs a lot of the conflicts in the middle east that are still going on today.
This story is such a tragedy and yet lives on in such gloriousness thanks to Sabaton
I was thinking that the music and the lyrical writing conveys a story meant to be remembered as a tragedy as opposed to a heroic event like a lot of their other songs.
it still lives on in new zealand and Australia with anzac day. The song no more waltzing matilda is from the point of view of a wounded survivor.
ANZAC day is the most important of the public holidays we have. It's the day where we show our support and respect for the soldiers past and present. It means more to us than our national day.

After watching Indy Neidell on the Great War Channel, this song hits differently these days. Gallipoli was a regular fixture in videos during this era. 'Left their letters in the sand.' Makes me teary.
I actually learned about Gallipoli in high school. This was the first Sabaton song I ever listened to after a guy at BMT told me about them. I figured they were some random Satanic death metal type deal and so ignored the recommendation, but after I was in England for about a year I googled the band name. I saw some really cool-sounding titles but I had to click on "Cliffs of Gallipoli." It absolutely wrecked me. I've been a Sabaton fan ever since.
if I remember correctly the ottoman general ordered a group of soldiers to charge with no ammo telling them "I dont order you to attack I ordered you too die" or something in that nature.
What was the point of that?!
The Last Battle is about how a group of German and American soldiers defended a castle together in the last days of ww2. It was called the weirdest battle of the war. I am surprised it hasn't been turned into a movie.
About as unlikely as the death of Patton ending up in a movie. Most of what was going down in that region, in the bunkers and research facilities run by the ss, is still secret.
It's also very underrated, I think tank would love it if he checked it out

It's doubtful ot could ever be made into a movie because it would mean some German soldiers would have to be portrayed as something other than inhuman bloodthirsty monsters.

Gallipoli was undoubtedly one of the most tragic and futile events in the WW1hell of tragedy and futility. Would be nice to think we’ve really learnt from it but... Great reaction as ever, Tank.
Trench warfare in France it was just a back and forth over the whole of WWI. Take the battle of Verdun for example in 9 month over 700000 casualties with over 300000 killed.

the survivors of the Galipoli landings were sent on to Passchendaele to fight.
Sabaton suprised me in Oberhausen, Germany when they did an instrumental version of "final solution". At first i was kinda suprised that they did the song at all (because headbanging to the greates warcrime in german history is kinda weird and bad) but they managed to transformed it into a ballad
First time I discovered Sabaton was at Hellfest 2010 and that was the song that made me go "Fuck I love this band !"
As a New Zealander I love that an awesome band did a song about the landings a relative of my was in the landings
This is one of those Sabaton songs which you can't help but love from the 1st hearing and play forever. At least it was for me.
Gallipoli had a unique place in our hearts in Aus. Eager to prove our worth as a fledgling nation (Australia was federated in1901), 1/5th of the entire population was enlisted in WWI, and 1 in 7 of those did not survive. The "empty chamber" conditions that were imposed by the British command basically dictated ANZACS as cannon fodder and that distain is still harboured today and will never be forgiven or forgotten.
Proud and happy that Sabaton saw fit to cover this battle and hope that your further delving into its history doesnt tear you up too much Tank.

It's so weird to think that the first time I saw Sabaton was in this era (2009 I think), and the last time I saw them was just before the lockdown in 2020 (Wembley arena), your memory plays tricks on you and you forget how low budget they where at the start.
I was at that concert. They played on the Thursday around noon (2nd day of a 4 day festival). First time I saw them live

Very true, even though "the art of war" is not one of the best Sabaton's songs, it is very underreacted. Also "Gott mit uns", and it's also much better imo.

This song got me into Sabaton. I first heard it on ANZAC day I think in 09 on my way to the Dawn parade.
Since then they have held the number one spot for me with this being there best song.
Hear in New Zealand this is our only major remembrance day, and there is a sense of honor without glorification, not only of this campaign but all conflicts New Zealand soldiers have served in.

You wish to see Sabaton life - I wish you that one day it will work! After I saw them for the first time, they "got me"! Now they are one of my all-time favorite bands! Their shows are absolutely stunning and the guys are really nice. I was very lucky to see them in Frankfurt last year before the big lockdown and it was so fantastic - I can't wait to see them again! There is a beautiful and moving song about a Gallipoli veteran that you should check out. It is not metal, it's actually a folk song written in the 1970s by a Scottish Australian named Eric Bogle and is titled "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda." Please take a look at Sabaton's song "The Final Solution" it's extremely controversial due to the nature of the content it is about, however in my opinion they capture the somberness absolutely perfectly.

I cant find tha actiual time they went on stage for this concert in 2010...but the Sweden rock festival takes place in the middle of June.... that is a time of year in sweden where it never really gets dark and the sun stays up past 22:00..... I have been playing UNO all night outside with no lights at 02:00 at midsummer. When it is the darkest at night at that time, it was har to tell if a card was green or blue...but thats about it ;)
So this MIGHT have been daytime...it might have been evening... hard to tell from the sunlight alone ;)

If I remember correctly, it was a mid to late afternoon slot for Sabaton on the main stage in 2010. This was a big step up for them at the time, having previously played the 3rd and 4th stages, and as you can see in the video, they got a great turnout and crowd response.
The approx 2-3 hours of semi-darkness per night really came as a shock on our first visit to SRF. Sleep is not a common pastime at that festival for sure :)

@TankTheTech Don't be surprised if you find this song growing on you over time. A few of their songs did this to me where I thought they were just "okay" at first then I found myself listening to them again & again...and this is one of those songs.
The lady Joakim was dancing with is wearing a blue hoodie which means she is probably a festival crew, SRF has a dedicated bunch of volunteers that crew the festival every year. If I recall correctly 2010 was a shit year weather wise so the crew was given those hoodies to keep warm. :)
Cliffs of Gallipoli was the first Sabaton song I've ever heard in the late 00's. I remember seeing a TH-camr I used to watch do a drum cover of it and I've been hooked since then

I do hope you’ll consider reacting to Van Canto’s cover of Primo Victoria, and definitely listen to the music video. Joakim is also featured in the music video! Unfortunately it’s difficult to find good live recordings of Van Canto performances, so you really are better off listening to the music video. Also, even though it’s an “a cappella” cover, I’m pretty sure there’ll be at least a little bit of gear you can talk about.

as it was sold to them as a great adventure to help the crown at the time.

I am a Turk, married to a Kiwi (New Zealander). We have been to the dawn services in both Gallipoli as well as Auckland. I was very excited to hear that Sabaton did a song about Gallipoli and listening to it I was very glad to hear how much they did this story justice.
Wow, the end credits on the live video took me by surprise, seeing the name of the editor "Jim Beckmann" here on your channel. That's one of my friends, who sadly passed away in 2014 in a free-diving accident in South-East Asia. That made an already emotional video even more emotional, but fun to see his name appear on one of my favourite channels.
For some trivia about Sweden Rock Festival (SRF); Sweden's biggest rock festival (big in Sweden = 35 000 in the audience). Next year is the 30th year annversary, started out in a small town called "Olofström" roughly 30km north of where it is today and moved to the slightly bigger town "Karlshamn" the year after (my town!). Some years later it moved to where it is today, ~20km west of Karlshamn. For many years they have had students from "Blekinge Institute of Technology" filming the festival, so I've had plenty of friends working there with Jim being one of them.
From what it looks like in the video, Sabaton didn't even play at the main stage in 2010. It looks like the second, or possibly even third, stage here. I looked up a poster from 2010 and they weren't highlighted in any way, just "one among all the others", so even though everyone in Sweden knew who they were, they hadn't been around long enough to be worthy of a better timeslot and bigger stage (SRF have also traditionally targeted more 70/80's band as the core of the festival).
Sabaton has of course played several times at the festival during the years and they always go as regular audience for the whole festival outside of their own timeslot (I would guess that they try to make room in their touring schedule to be able to participate at the full festival).
Speaking about timeslots, I asked the question back when you did "Mirror Mirror" by Blind Guardian when they played in the evening and started out with daylight but ended the set when it was dark; it would be nice to hear you talk about how the changing of daylight into evening changes a set, if it changes anything, with how you set up the lightning, pyro or other stage effects etc.

As far as the bands and crews themselves, it doesn’t change much. Most bands will still put on the same exact show in daylight has they would at night, if they’re allowed to do it. Now, obviously from an audience perspective, the lighting and pyro may not look the same as it won’t pop as much in daylight, but most bands take themselves seriously enough to not skip out on the production.

If you would like more info on the Gallipoli Campaign, I suggest reading the book “Gallipoli” by Peter Hart or watching the movie Gallipoli(1981), starring a very young Mel Gibson. You will get the idea of what the Gallipoli Campaign was like from either of these, in my personal opinion.

I know I'm late to the party but just in case it hasn't been mentioned yet: the different lyrical structure compared to other Sabaton songs might stem from the fact that much of the lyrics is loosely based on a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, commemorating the battle and all those fallen soldiers.
(The one that is partially shown carved in stone.)
In the lines "far too young to die in such a way" and "such waste of life" you can hear the disgust in Joakims voice
Full body goosebumps and tears is a very common reaction to this song for me. Thank you for this reaction. ❤
More so than any Sabaton song, this one really focuses on the horrific impact of war. Rather than singing about heroic actions, this one focuses on how people were forced to fight and kill each other for no reason at all. The impact is even greater when you read the words of Ataturk on the monument, recognizing that there is no animosity or conflict between Australian/New Zealand and Turkish people. This song is tragic.
I really like the evolution aspect you're mentioning - seeing the journey from more humble beginnings to international headliners is fascinating.
And that goes for a lot of bands, many have become a lot more experienced in both their musical skills, but also in their showmanship, over the years, and it often shows.
That's not to take anything away from them at this point, on the contrary - it shows that there's always potential to polish, to improve, to experiment and evolve, even when you're reaching higher and higher levels. (It's not like they weren't successful back then, that is a pretty huge crowd and a lot of crowd support for them) Is everyone gonna like everything any band and/or bandmember does to change over the course of the lifespan of a band? Nah. But that's the case regardless of what you do.
I'd say that to anyone doing music, regardless of how successful they might be (and that's highly subjective in and of itself): do what you feel like, try what you want to try. It's your journey.
When I first time heard Sabaton way back in 2016, I get used to listen their discography in a pretty wired way - starting from albums of 2008-2014 (now 2019) period and then listen albums of 2000-2006 period (except album Metalizer of 2007, which was a re-record of Fist For Fight Album of 2001 with only two new songs - 7734 and Thundergods. Also there was such songs like Speeder and cover for Judas Priest's Jawbreaker). And The Art Of War was one of my fav. albums of 2008-2014 (at that time) period of the band)) if you wanna see Sabaton's performance of this song with the good quality and with their old keyboardist, you can just watch official video. And as a side quest, try to see how many references to other songs and bands you can spot in the lyrics.

I think I know what you mean when you say that you like this song less than most of the other Sabaton songs you've heard so far. I have had this song in my playlist for years and, on average, heard it probably a few times per week, I thought it was okay, and only recently I grew to like this song, like, a lot. It is definitely in the top third of my favourite Sabaton songs by now.
Also, after watching your video regarding the "reaction scene" a few weeks ago, I want to write my first comment under your videos and say that I really like your reactions, because you seem genuine and you add value to the original videos, especially with your experience as a roadie. I don't watch a lot of reaction channels - basically only yours, a historian reaction channel and a history teacher reaction channel (I like history and music :D), because I think that you, and they, add value, context and information to the original video. If all a reaction channel offers is their facial expression and opinion if they liked or disliked it, I think it is a waste of my time since I like to think that I can form my own informed opinions (partly based on reaction videos that add new information). That said, of course, I am happy when you say that you like a song that I like too since of course, it feels good to have my already existing preferences confirmed! But I also like to have my ideas challenged and that's partly why I like this video as well.
I would say that you should keep up the good work and stay the way you are, but I keep thinking that that would sound kinda... condescending perhaps? Should I say that you should develop yourself and your channel as you see fit? That's kinda redundant and unnecessary, isn't it? I guess all I can say that I like what I have seen of your content so far, I am confident that I will keep liking it for the foreseeable future and that I hope that you will keep enjoying what you do.

No way, there is footage from 2095 SRF? I was there man, and watched Sabaton's set. Yes it was a small stage in a tent! I was there more for Blind Guardian that year, but for sure Sabaton impressed me. Twas a fun night!
No sorry got my dates and Fests mixed up. SRF was 2003. I saw Sabaton at Graspop in 2007, Aerosmith and Iron Maiden were headlining then...
Seeing them and Judas Priest in September it will be my second time seeing Sabaton live they put on a great show , I’m really enjoying your reactions .

@@aprilvoecks5877 yeah i know they cancelled last year's tour, but from what i understand they cancelled this year too. They were supposed to play at Midalidare Rock (in Bulgaria) together with Sabaton, Alestorm, Within Temptation, Running Wild and some other bands, but now they postponed it for next year
@@grigorov1914. It looks like that may be a case-be-case issue. Their website says that some of the locations with Judas Priest from last fall are still scheduled to happen this fall. (I checked today.)
This one's a personal favourite of mine, probably because i'm from Aus and therefore biased to any song related to it.
Outdoor pyro seems riskier. Like if there is a wind blowing across the stage, I could see the gas pyro blowing downwind more than expected. You can see it a bit in this performance but it doesn't look bad enough to push the pyro out of the safe zones you mentioned.

Where to not stand on the stage - In videos from the last Great Tour they have a grille at the front of the stage, and here and there you can see black spots (soot) on the grille. I guess a good idea is to not stand on the black spots if you don't want roasted chessnuts. That also makes it important for the stagecrews to always put down the grilles at the same place at every concert. And it also comes down to having a good pyrotech, one who knows when to not shoot off a flame thrower.
Like you said, it is a different feel in this song, like they haven't found the concept and style of Sabaton as we know them today. They are on the way but just not there yet.

This one took a while to grow on me. I learned about Gallipoli in an honors history class I took in high school, but outside of that you never hear much about in history classes here in the USA. I'd love to see you do Screaming Eagles, its older era, but a total banger. Watch the official video, it has gear to review and has great action scenes. But honestly there are many great Saboton songs to see/hear
daniel played mostly roland fantom g7 and roland xp30 on tour during 2010 and 2011. I've also seen him playing some midi keyboards, roland a-800 pro and other brands too. Since they formed Civil War I only have seen him playing roland jupiter 50 (which was released in 2011).

Later that summer, at Metaltown in Gothenburg, I heard and saw them for the first time ever. That was also my first metal concert ever. Been fan since! :)

(i really like babymetal, and listen their songs often, so i guess that's how i found out about you). next one was the the hu video you did with your father (which was amazing to be honest. really loved the energy you and your father had together).
