Remember that old Ford truck twin "I" beam suspension commercial? It's crazy because Ford knows how to build amazing suspension but chooses not to.
The twin-I beam was great for a smooth ride, but terrible in tight curves or any kind of swerving. It had really bad understeer.

I had a Toyota Landcruiser Amazon for 10 years. Had 200,000 miles on it and it never skipped a beat. My biggest mistake was replacing it.

Toyota's aren't up there with the likes of BM's, VW, Merc's & Audi's when it comes to prestige.. But what they've got going for them is engine reliability.. Their engines will run and run and run and run.. and will out last the body of the car.. I had a Honda from brand new back in Jan 2005.. Had it for 9 years when someone ran into the back of it and totalled it.. It had 133,000 miles on the clock when it was totalled.. Up until it was written off, I had no engine issues whatsoever..

I immediately looked up the current sales numbers of the Maverick vs the Tacoma, and the Maverick sold 38,052 units in Q2 of 2024, and 94,058 units total for 2023. The Tacoma was 69,437 Units in Q2 of 2024, and in 2023, Toyota sold a total of 234,768 Tacomas.

The worst part of driving through NM is in Albuquerque when the intersections have completely faded lane lines and turning arrows faded so you have no clue which lane is turn only. The rest of NM I love though even if the roads are a little rough

The Prado has an air independent suspension. The Ranger/Everest here has a conventional/mechanical suspension. Both vehicles performed well given that information.
Even in the fortuner stability is very good.

The Japanese don't get much credit for revolutionizing car and motorcycle manifacturing in the 70s and 80s. You know when you pop your hood and can see the engine, it wasn't a thing with most American cars and bikes because engines leaked oil all the time and were always completely covered in grease and gunk and dirt. Well the Japanese fixed it by developing better gaskets and their engines were always clean. Also American cars broke all the time and required regular maintenance. The Japanese started making cars that would run reliably for hundreds of thousands miles without any major or minor malfunctions, you had to only change oil. They got better mileage than American cars and they were cheaper. The definition of quality.
I'm all for 'yotas, but there's American cars, and there's American trucks. And there's pre 2000 American trucks and post 2000. I would take a pre 2000's Ford truck over most newer Toyotas.... But I'd take any Toyota over any American car.... As for reliability, old-school American V8s are top notch. 350chev - I mean even the 5.7 Toyota V8 they used in every big truck and SUV for the past 2 decades is almost an exact clone of the 5.7 small block Chevy.... For 460 was used for like ~ 50 years and so many of them are still going strong to this day. Toyota is the best all around, but you can't really go wrong with old US trucks (with Detroit iron V8s, anyway). Also the Ford |6 was indistructable....
Toyota makes great vehicles, or at least they did, but let's not pretend all Japanese manufacturers do.
Nissan makes very comfortable, smooth, good looking cars, and they only last about 130,000 miles.

But I will say ford uses less plastic parts in the blower assembly and clutch assembly...ohhh or the plastic clips that Toyota, handa or Mitsubishi uses....but my ford's reached almost 545,000 miles on the original engine and transmission...so...may not be as comfortable but will definitely outlast...

Most toyota/lexus SUVs are rear axle, even today, especially from this era.
@@TheYemcl Because while independent suspension is best for comfort, for actual offroading, you want that solid axle to keep your tires planted. When one tires goes up, it pushes the other down.
Also, solid axles are stronger, simpler, and better at handling hp and weight.

I had a 70 with the twin beam. Great design, but also i believe vehicle weight has a lot to do with it. Heavier makes stable. And a flexible frame vs unibody
You gotta stop the bs. Modern suspension components and geometry is way better than in 1970. I have a 1973 f250 custom. That thing is slow and handles like a swimming pool. I hate driving it, but it was my dad's so I keep it.

@@azubuikeugochukwu890 it's hard to import but not banned, it was just replaced by the Tacoma in the US markets, and there is a 25% tariff to import it from other countries and is allowed on the roads as long as it's street legal (which can vary by state). The biggest drawback is really just the extra tax on importing that makes it undesireable as similar models are cheaper to get. True fans can still buy them if they have the money.
I've got a 2009 Lexus RX 350 with 104K miles on it. It is the best car I've ever owned. Easy to maintain and extremely dependable.

The suspension is set up to drive with a load. No load, bounces every where.
Ford makes most of its money on nomadism and industrial low duty haulists. So this can be expected. The Hilux is an incredible unhitched experience though. Anything more than a load of rocks on its tub or a tiny camping trailer on the regular will reduce its lifespan from 200 years to 6. Doesn't yours F250 have the adaptive anyhow?

It's Achilles heel is 200 speed bumps within 1 inch of each other and it is clearly more stable than the Toyota in ALL other situations.

As much as I can't stand Ford, this test is really a reflection of how the suspension is tuned not the quality of the vehicle. Those bumps are strategically placed to test a specific frequency of suspension cycles. Weight of vehicle, Spring rate combined with damping force, and speed determine if it appears violent or not. If the Toyota slows down a bit it may appear just as violent because the frequency will be off. I'd like to see this test at a wide range of speeds to really gauge the difference. Not that I'm planning on running over 300 curbs in a row.

To be fair, this is not the kind of test that can do a side-by-side comparison between different models at a single speed like this. Four-wheeled vehicles have 4 resonant frequencies determined primarily by spring stiffness, vehicle length, and weight distribution. (though 1 isn't practical to hit, so really 3) If the vehicle hits bumps at one of those frequencies, it WILL rock with ever-increasing force uncontrollably. And different models of vehicles will obviously differ in those parameters and so have different frequencies to avoid.
Simply determine what speed will cause the bumps to match a frequency on one vehicle but not the other, and you too can make one-sided results in either direction when viewed side-by-side.
Bear in mind, I'm not saying that the Toyota won't outperform the Ford when tested under a range of speeds. It probably will. I'm saying that this one test in isolation of others is meaningless.

Pretty sure the Ford has a solid rear axle. The Toyota has a independent rear suspension. The solid axle is preferred for towing.
