    I really love this video. I completely agree with what Chloe was saying about low waste rather than zero waste.. It is very difficult to switch to a completely zero waste lifestyle but even as a student, I have found so many ways to drastically reduce waste that have not been difficult (bulk shopping with jars, always have my metal straws and travel mug). But on the other hand, I won't stop using contact lenses or an electric toothbrush (which has drastically improved my dental health). Anyways, the point is, do the best you can and be conscious and it will make a difference :)

    • @monemori
      @monemori 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I still use an electric toothbrush as well. If you are interested, I recently learnt a brand called tiomatik makes replacement brush heads that are almost entirely compostable/recyclable

    • @christine3772
      @christine3772 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Apparently Bausch & Lomb has a free recycling program with some company where you can mail in the opened packets your contacts come in (as well as the used contacts themselves) for their affiliate to recycle them properly. I have dailies so I'm excited I found out about this! I've yet to mail in my box but it sounds simple enough. (Edit- also you can send in any used brand btw, doesn't have to be B&L contacts!).

    • @ChloeLepeltier
      @ChloeLepeltier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! TerraCycle also has similar programs for other brands, it's a great resource to look into for "recycling" when" refusing" or "reducing" are not an option.

    The discussion on zero waste vs little waste got me thinking on how that can reflect on veganism as well. Personally, due to cultural reasons and very bad anemia, I could never fully transition to a vegan diet, even though its efforts to reduce environmental damage and animal cruelty really resonate with me. I tend to eat animal products once a week or during special ocassions, but the rest of the time I try to consume plant based meals. I often get teased by my friends and family about “how I need to stop fake being a vegan when Im not”, and that is true, Im not a vegan but I feel like my efforts count, even if the best I can do at this point in time may not be 100% vegan. Perhaps that would also be a way to make a vegan diet more approachable to a standard diet, just like “little waste” is a more approachable view of the zero waste movement.

      So true. The point is to be moving in the right direction and every little bit helps.

    • @J3399

      You’re so right. But I feel like most of the people who consider themselves to be vegan would say you’re not doing enough and would judge you for eating animals products even if it’s a special occasion. I see why people don’t like vegans. I’m “vegan” myself but I hate calling myself that because there’s such stigma around that word.

    • @KellyDollie
      @KellyDollie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree with you totally. I try to be as vegan as I can as well but I have anemia as well, but mine is a bit odd, I can't eat red meats because they contain too much iron and I basically overdose, same as when I try to take iron pills (my mum freaked out when my dr gave me the pills I got so sick) . I have found that fish seems to work well, apparently, they have a slightly different iron enzyme. My friends that I've told I wanted to be vegan always tell me that I'm not trying hard enough when I end up eating fish every few weeks. They just tell me to eat more kale or something instead if I'm going to call myself vegan. I've ended up just saying I'm pescetarian instead to stop people from being rude and telling me I'm not trying hard enough.

    • @rockchica09
      @rockchica09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@J3399 I'm not vegan, "just" vegetarian, but I understand that when you are against killing and using animals for food, the attitude "but a little killing is okay" doesn't seem acceptable. However, being harsh to people with a different attitude, is neither going to help those people nor the animals. It just creates resistance. It should be more about encouraging people to do their best instead of taking them down. Same goes for the zero waste movement. It's a great movement in my opinion, and to get other people on the train, it has to be approachable. Encouraging little changes and progress from there is going to make a bigger change in the long run than trying to make people feel bad if they don't go completely zero waste over night. So thumbs up for Chloe's realistic and friendly approach 👍

    • @tracyzook857
      @tracyzook857 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Really like what Michael Pollan says. "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." And maybe he coined the phrase "flexitarian". I say I am that or that I lean vegan. Eating pasture raised organic local meats is very expensive so they are a small part of our diet, except for eggs nicely packaged in reusable/recyclable/compostable cardboard (have chickens but they are getting old, laying less). Plus they are completely encased in plastic (although less than the grocery with the additional plastic/styrofoam try and blotter.). Don't have a place to refill here, but even if I buy a large bag of beans, it is less packaging. Still need to go to my local fish market and see if they will put my order in my own container but also very expensive protein source.

      Same. I’m trying to be vegan too. It’s not easy where I’m located,& we don’t have a bulk section. I am though buying more fresh fruits,& veggies compared to premise foods. I also bought reusable produce/bulk bags to cut done in using their plastic bags. I’ve realized that my grandma uses dish cloths instead of sponges and that’s a swap that won’t even really cost extra vs buying a pack of sponges,& they’re washable/reusable. Same with making laundry detergent,hand soap dish soap. It might be a few dollars or so extra in the beginning but not so much that it’ll mess up your budget.& it lasts so much longer and doesn’t even take long to make. I buy cloth napkins and dish drying towels on clearance and use them for their use or each other’s. TJmaxx has vegan options for cheap beauty wise and jet.com doesn’t too. There are other online markets/sites that are just as good too,but I can’t recall since I haven’t really used any yet. I use reusable bags(plastic :( but at least washable) for my sons lunches,instead of baggies. I have washable coffee filters. There’s so much I’m learning and I love it.

    I dont live zero waste ,but I do try and reduce items in my home. Over the past few years I have switched a lot of my products. I only use Castile soap,vinegar, oils for cleaning. I made my own body spray and shampoo. I buy toothpaste that comes in a glass and. It's the type of lifestyle that once you start you cant stop ! I started more so out of wanting to "green" my life and it kind of resulted in minimalism and zero waste as well 😎👍🤛

    I loved this video! And that zucchini was insane I thought it was a long watermelon! I’ve also been on a journey to reduce my waste but I agree with Chloe that it isn’t a lifestyle that’s feasible to everyone because the initial investment of produce bags, reusable shopping bags, glass jars, travel mugs, metal straws can get pretty steep! But it’s all about doing the best you can because any improvement helps a lot. Just being in the mindset alone where you’re conscious about how much plastic you bring into your home and the food waste you produce is a step in the right direction. Great video! ❤️

    Thank you for your video. I also believe in the importance of a low waste lifestyle. Unfortunately, many people believe that recycling is the solution but is not, we need to change our mindset. We are too addicted to the commodity of using a plastic bag instead of taking our time and think to bring a canvas bag or bulks for our grocery.

    P.S an easy way to get glass jars is to clean out and reuse nut butter jars, pickle jars, coconut oil jars, and tomato sauce ones! Since coconut oil is a staple in my house we have a lot of jars now that we use for overnight oats and just drinking out of them too!

    Ive been slowly transitioning to zero waste over the last year or two. I've gotten pretty far now. And I've realized over this time, that not only have I been promoting a healthier environment, but I've also improved my personal health as well without trying. Being zero waste, you tend to eat much more produce and bulk foods and grains and all of your products become more natural, especially if you make them yourself. It can really change your life around

  • @laseysimon7633
    @laseysimon7633 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve been wanting to reduce my waste and have made a few switches that are easy for me:
    1. Bamboo paper towels (washable and reusable - on amazon for about $10 and has lasted me over a year for one roll)
    2. Reusable grocery bags, produce bags & mason jars.
    3. Reusable utensils in a to go pouch
    I want to add more things but I’m kind of lost what else I can implement on my day to day life. I’ve written a few things I hope to get in the near future as soon as I can afford them like: oven baking mat, reusable zip bags & bamboo toothbrush. Plastic is hard to avoid when shopping at Trader Joe’s, so I have been going to Whole Foods for a lot of the produce that Trader Joe’s only have in bags like the leafy greens, cilantro, green onions etc...
    The biggest thing I’m not sure I can afford is sustainable clothing. I’ve looked for some and they are very pricey. I haven’t bought any clothes in at least 6 months, and I’m not the type of person to be constantly going through clothes like the “fast fashion” people. I try not to buy things from places like China in order to prevent other malpractices such as child labor and human labor abuse. But when the time comes and I have to buy something, I’ve been tying to make sure it’s something I REALLY need. This movement is very interesting and exciting for me. I think it’s an extension from veganism. It’s already normal for me to analyze products and give things a second thought instead of mindlessly purchasing things. So being vegan helps a bit but it’s still very hard to do for people without the means.
    Thank you for this series! It’s coming at the perfect time for me!

    So, with the toothbrush, I too need a sonicare but I’ve dramatically reduced my need for a new head. I change mine once a year. I use a bamboo brush in the morning and if I need to rarely after a meal. I use the sonicare at the end of the day, sometimes every other day and this works well with keeping my dentist happy and at the same time tremendously lowering my plastic head use. This was a trial and error method I used over time that works for me. I use baking soda for toothpaste. If you feel like you need a clean head try washing the sonicare head with soap and hot water.

    I would love to hear you talk about fast fashion! The fashion industry is the second largest contributer to waste so it would be cool to hear your thoughts on that and ethical brands and such.

    I need to apply Chloe's suggestions because I believe in not just a zero waste lifestyle but a lifestyle that is not lead by materialism. So being zero waste would help me to achieve that.

    Hi there! I have a question: the glass jars with the metal clips that secure it, has a rubber lining on the lid for an air tight seal. Would that be recyclable, or are they used because they can be used 10000 times? I went to the store to get some glass containers/jars and saw those, then I felt guilty if I bought them even with the rubber inside, so I got jars with metal lids. Just want your opinion :)

    Start a garden . That will save you cash and a trip and time. Only grow what you eat and can the access in jars. Jars are also more economical for storing food. Solar refrigerators are a good sustainable option. Starting a community gargden gives you access to free seeds

    Try the Radius Source toothbrush - made in USA. I love it, the best toothbrush ever! Just buy one with "Medium" bristles because their extra soft bristles are too soft (at least to me). Available on Amazon as well - refills, floss, etc.

    I don’t know if this was already mentioned in another comment but there are charcoal or bamboo toothbrushes that can be recycled or maybe even added to the compost pile.

    For Zero Waste, what do you do for toilet paper?

    • @ChloeLepeltier

      You can go different ways: use recycled toilet paper, switch to "family cloth" and/or install a bidet.

    Going zero waste (or damn close) on a zero carb diet. My entire diet is made up of 10 items (that includes spices/oils/etc), so it's damn easy in the kitchen. The problem area is actually camping/hiking, since basically everything is made of plastics.
