    Appreciate your videos. I started beekeeping over 10 years ago. Tried reading up on it. Not many good videos TH-cam back then. Life happens, I lost my husband and relocated to a completely different region of Texas with Africanized strains. I got to haul queens for a commercial beekeeper, but it didn't give me hands on experience. I haven't given up though I have made many mistakes. Just wanted to pop on and say thanks.

    On hot days I use ice bricks (the kind you use in lunch box) to help keep me cool. I put the brick in a bandanna and pin a couple to my shirt before putting on my safety gear. It helps or at least I think so.

    Another great video. I need to replace a queen in one of my 2 hives. Unfortunately I haven’t had success finding the queen to get rid of her. Tried 3 times now to find her. On top of that for some reason the bees are filling drone comb with nectar instead of drone brood. Making it difficult to do the drone comb method of reducing mite numbers. The learning continues

    • @beek
      @beek  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Try adding queen excluders between all boxes, wait a week, go back and look where the eggs are, and that will limit finding the queen to 10 frames. Carry that box away from the hive to inspect it so the queen can walk off into another box.

    Hi David, I think that the modified I-beam construction of the top bar and side bars of the plastic frame is to increase strength and rigidity while keeping weight down. As you say this design provides a great hiding place for SHB. A possible solution could be to fill that gap (on new and unused frames) with caulking or melted wax. Cheers 🐝

    Hi David, I had a swarm yesterday for some reason they landed on a bush, maybe 10 yards away and it was loading the ground and I figured that’s good. I could always capture them when I went to get everything together to catch them was Bees there they were all flying back to what would thatis it because the queen didn’t leave? That’s one question now the hive they flew out of I inspected today. There is a lot of eggs but a lot of drone brood. Also, is that a sign of Charlie PA

    • @beek

      They use it to control the moisture in the hive and yes, they will add it to honey that is too dry.

    So how do you harvest honey on a frame that is half capped and half nectar? The honey comes out runny. Also there is drone brood at the bottom-assume you would just scrape the off? Thanks it’s a good video.

    • @beek
      @beek  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can wait until it's all capped over. That's probably the best approach. I would not advise scrapping off the drone brood. It will ooze milky liquid onto the frame and into your honey. Try spinning it but do not uncap your drone cells. The larvae may spin out, but be caught in your strainer,

    Good Morning, I can't remember where I heard this, I thought it was something you mentioned, but I will ask. During the flow, do you do "deep hive inspections", if so, how often and what exactly are you looking for? (getting in there for a purpose)
    I thought I heard you mention doing hive inspections every third week during the flow, or summer months. I was just curious, if I were to adopt that practice, what would be some things I would want to be checking for? Thanks again!

      I would check at least every 2 weeks. Look for swarm cells, presence of the queen or at least eggs, check the laying pattern, make sure the colony has enough space to expand (for honey or brood), check for hive beetles...

    My brother and I started beekeeping this year. He started off with a nuc while I started with package bees. We’ve seen my queen several times, but we have yet to spot his queen. We are getting ready to harvest his first honey super. I don’t think you could help me with my problem though. My problem is with the beekeeper and not the hive. I’ll keep bringing it up, but he has yet to check his hive for mites. He doesn’t think it’s necessary, claims he can spot them with his eyes.

    • @beek
      @beek  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I've struggled with the same thing, trying to teach new beekeepers that mites are a real problem. Most mites are under the adult bee's abdomen, so he's going to have to pick each bee up to look. 👀
