    I like how there's two types of closures for this. A heartfelt message that basically boils down to "see you on the other side!", And a completely abrupt slap of static across the face.

      @@_Sur22_ but also, radio waves travel at light speed. You would have to be nearly 46,000 miles away from the broadcast station for there to be a quarter second delay. (Speed of light is approximately 186,000 MP/s or 299,792 km/s). Obviously, that is unrealistic as most antennas were inefficient at picking up signals more than 70 miles away (inverse square law). So in reality, yes, the cutout would be instantaneous; however, the only way you would be able to perceive it is if you were in two places at once because all digital broadcasts have a delay due to latency in the sending and receiving systems.

      Me too! Have you seen how Northern Ireland did it? There, BBC One Northern Ireland and UTV (seemingly the last two analog channels left at the time, and the two biggest channels in the region) simulcast a special for the last hour before switchover, which celebrated the history of Northern Irish TV. This special was called "The Magic Box" and as of recently it can be found on TH-cam. BBC One NI also pulled out some old branding in the couple of hours before that, with the channel's segue into the 10PM news using the clock from the 90s "balloons" branding (also the first time a clock ident had beev used at all ever _since_ the 90s), and then the continuity into Magic Box was done against their 80s CGI globe animation.

Which’ll be kind of wild, because I don’t know how many people will still be watching broadcast TV by then. In 2009, everyone still had an antenna, satellite, or cable. Now the only people I know that still have it (cable or satellite) are all 60+. No one I know under 35 has a cable package. They do have TH-cam TV or Hulu Live though, which is close enough.

    • @DrKoneko
      @DrKoneko ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@fuzzyblurrydotcom no with digital broadcasts when the video signal is sent out it takes a second to become visible due to decoding but when the signal shuts off the picture is lost. Meaning that there would be a little bit of time lost. You can try this by going to a live stream on TH-cam. Watch when the broadcast ends versus when the video uploaded afterwards ends. For example: if a TH-cam stream has the following dialogue "I am a little bit more concerned with the state of the world than I was last week" then the stream might involve the sentence "I am a little bit more concerned with the state of the world" and the rest would not be viewable. The video uploaded afterwards however would have the full sentence since it's a recording and not a live broadcast. Theoretically the signal could be entire broadcasted but you'd have to be very lucky and have a great reception.

    A lot of people find this video sad, but honestly this made my day.
    I was born in the early 90s, it's been such an incredible experience growing up in a 1st world country with technology advancing around me so rapidly.
    Seeing broadcasted TV, VHS tapes, and CDs evolving into most media being stored/accessed online or on SSDs.
    Using dial up internet with telephone wires as a child and now being able to access it instantly anywhere with a pocket-sized touchscreen computer (something made possible by the shutdown of analog TV broadcasts making room for the signals).
    Sure some things have gotten worse, but some things have gotten better as well. When I was born we wouldn't have been able to watch this historical moment at the touch of a button, with the ability to talk about it with all of you guys from around the world.
    The nostalgia from this video made me teary eyed, a combination of missing my childhood and thinking about all the positive effects of how shockingly advanced humanity is becoming.

    Am I the only one who thinks that the analog was way more robust to weaker signal than digital? Even if you have slightly weaker signal, the analog is still quite watchable. Digital is way less forgiving and if the signal drops under a certain threshold (somewhere like 60-70%), the picture starts dropping frames, starts to corrupt (pixelation, error chunks) and sound starts to corrupt (error chunks). The weaker the signal, the worse the condition gets, and around 50% the signal is lost completely. Analog is watchable down to 40%, and around 30% you still get some picture.

    It’s so strange and sad to think about that all that hard ware and electronics and radio tower, after running and transmissions for so many decades, one day just stops working. Soon as you heard that click, that’s the sound of it dying. All those racks and racks of radio equipment talking to us and entering us for decades one day just stops, no sound of it’s hum, no lights flashing, and no longer able to speak. It reminds me of a final transmission from an astronaut as he is lost in space, floating away to never be head from again. It’s a sad end of an era. Even if digital is better, it would still be nice to be able to turn on an old analog tv for the nostalgia

      In analog tv the motionpictures where sent in AM, (Amplitude Modulation), and the sound where sent in the same frequency on FM, (Frequency Modulation).
      Atleast in most of Europe, the AM radio is nearly dead. So I make the guess alot of the AM-broadcasting equipment are scrapped.
      FM, compeeting against the internet. My guess are alot of the developing countries starts upp more FM-radio, due to maybee cheaper prices. The old FM-equipment for analog tv-sound may end up as radiostations in developing countries.
