Oh thanks! Yeah, they help a lot. But still, sometimes I have to revert to making test right on the canvas - good example would be gradients.
Another tip would be to mark them on the back, so not to forget what the brand and color of yarn is

Hi!
I got no advice for you here - for me I just know how much it will take based on my experience. So it will come to you as you progress.
But what you can do, which is quite on the top, is to just check how much space you can cover with one ball of yarn, and just see what is the size of the rug you are making, so you would know at least a rough estimation.
