I love these pencils. I don’t care much for the lightfast qualities because I’m using them in books. But the colour mixing abilities are wonderful. And you can layer over and over, many times. They go down beautifully. At first they leave a bit of tooth showing, but then, 2 or 3 light layers in and they are filling up the tooth gaps and creating a beautiful finish. Warning: they smudge easily at the moment because of 5he heatwave. I bought white first. Thought the build quality of the pencil was lovely and so over about 18 months I’ve collected together all the colours from the 40 set. If I need a colour I don’t have I just mix it. They mix as well as paint. To me, they are a thing of beauty and wonder.
I just got the white & omg I’m blown away by the blending capability!!! Ugh I wish I hadn’t ordered 4 stupid budget sets in the last month & a half, I could have had the luminance instead 🤦🏼♀️ I’m gonna to hold off on anymore budget sets no matter how many reviews on them come out, I think I might end up liking the luminance more than Holbein!! 🙀🦋🎨💘🍭
This box is ,by far, the best packaging for colored pencils I have ever experienced. The pencil "cushions" each pencil separately. Seriously fabulous. These pencils rock for sure. IMO they are the best on the market. Caran D'ache hit it out of the park on this product! Thanks for the review!❤️
Great review Claire, these look lovely and I was impressed with the packaging and how solid those pencil trays are too. The colours look wonderful but the price makes them unrealistic for colouring books, that said I would still like to buy both the White and the Buff Titanium lol Thank you so much for sharing these top shelf goodies with us :)
I love my Luminance pencils and my Pablos equally and often us them together. I purchased the Lyras based on your review and really love them as well. I use the Caran D'ache full blenders so much - on many different pencils. Thanks for sharing!!
Excellent review Claire, i have the Full set and i really love them and you're so right for the Boxe these are the only colored pencils i leave on that Fantastic box, because they are tight and no problem to put them up and they are much more protected on this box then any colored pencils cases!
Absolutely wonderful, thorough review Claire. I appreciate you taking the time to do this review and for providing so much information. These are on my list, and are expensive. But....so much cheaper than a therapist. Lol
I definitely recommend this for professionak artist that want to sell their art , because the quality last longer than any other colored pencils , and its great for portraits and making small details , i just bought mine and its delivering tomorrow
So happy for you that you were able to get them!! Fantastic review too! I'm so excited and can't wait to see what you do with them and the colour combinations!!!!
Great review Claire, I love my luminance. I wish more colortubers would use them in their tutorials, but I am slowly learning. They do the most amazing skin tone which I only just learnt, would love to find a darker skin tone tutorial with them too. Thank you for sharing xo
I agree! I plan to use them... if I ever collect the whole set lol. Personally, I like the Pablos a little more than the Luminance, and I plan to order them soon. I hope. We'll see - they aren't cheap lol.
Excellent review! I already own these colouring pencils and I think they are the best on the market; I love everything about them from their natural colours to their blending ability. Thank you for mentioning the box! I don't understand why people are upset at the box, I think it's awesome. It's so sturdy and each pencil is so well protected in the foam holder that I personally prefer it over the tins. Both my Derwent Inktense & my Faber Castell Polychromos come in tins and the trays that the pencils lie in are flimsy and they don't protect your pencils like the Caran D'Ache box does. If anyone is considering buying these pencils, I can't recommend them enough. Yes they are expensive but they are totally worth it. Thank you Claire for a great review.

Hello dear Claire, thank you so very much for this review of one of the highest sought after professional colouring pencils. I have always said to myself to get a set of 12 colours to try them to see how well they work bless. Until, three days ago on your group buying swaping and selling omg when ever I login on your group there is the perfect set that I have been looking for and at a third off the normal manufactured price. I must have saved at least £100 on most of the four derwent sets so far, and made life long creative friends. Now then I found Shannon who is offering the full 76+2 Luminance Pecil Set for 160 which is at least 30 less than amazon and caran do ache wow, with 10 recorded delivery from way up north down south is cool. So I am happy bunny lol. Hubby fell in love with them and said yep here's the money get them so Shannon is delighted, we always pay via PayPal friends & family so no PayPal charges. So I have drawn out my charts ready for swatching and unboxing on camera so I always do a video to say thank you to the lovely person who sells these amazing beautiful pencils which is always appreciated bless. So Thank you again dear Claire as always. Have downloaded this video for when I start blending & layering blessed be. Happy Colouring! Stay Safe, Take care of you n' yours. Much Love n big warm hugs from Us3 here down in Winchester, Hampshire Lizzie, Josh n' Pixie Bella puss cat xxx Btw, we love the Fantasy Cats that's a must in this feline household lol xx☮💜🎨🖌🖍🌈☕🥰🦋
I love these pencils! I've just completed the set! I love the feel of them, they're chalky but smooth and love making new colours with them! Great review! Next I'm going to get the Derwent light-fast collection, when the 100 set comes out, hopefully near Christmas
First of all, let me say that this is one of the most informative, well presented reviews of pencils that I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. I have subscribed because of that. Because you mentioned that this set is very good for landscapes and portrait work, I would like to know what would be a comparable in quality set to use as a supplement to give a fuller color range for a lot of different types of coloring. I am not an artist, and afraid I never will be, but I have found coloring my own cards very relaxing and have just discovered adult coloring books. I used to sketch a little and do some beginning decorative one stroke painting, but a tumor under my brain got in the way for a good number of years. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that both drawing and painting required the muscle memory that years of practice had given me, and it had been lost. I had no idea that it was all about muscle memory. My first attempt to draw quickly brought tears, and I gave up on the spot, still being too weak to be able to start over from square one. I am now 70 years old and coming out of a 7 year crash. I am finally developing an interest in my old activities again, and have now decided that I want good pencils, because I intend to try my hardest to work at learning coloring techniques and to do the best that I can. Crayola just didn't do it for me, and the quality of the prismacolour premieres that I have been waiting so long to buy have, in my opinion, been completely destroyed. I found out the hard way by buying a set of 36 watercolor pencils from them , 12 split from top to bottom, one missing altogether, and they had the ugliest, roughest wood in the barrels that I had ever seen. The cores were smaller and many off-centered, etc, The wood on these pencils here looks wonderful. I will try a few open stock, and if I like them, the whole set. Please, suggest a good quality set to fill in the color range. Thank you so much for such a professional review! Dee
Which sharpener do you think is the best for the Luminance pencils? I'm afraid of electric or battery operated sharpeners. Thanks in advance, Claire! Xoxoxx
Love the detail and in-depthness(?) of your video! Not sure if you'll see this, but could you do a comparison between these and the Derwent Lightfast pencils?
Btw I agree about the blender Claire. I thought it was just my imagination. Glad it’s not but I wish it was better and yes the box is incredible and is as good as when I bought them about 2 years ago 🌹
Good review Claire, the range of colours is beautiful. I did notice you had a Derwent Lightfast pencil there, and with their advent this month, Luminance are no longer the only game in town where lightfastness is concerned. Since Derwent haven't even got their full range of colours on sale, it is probably a bit premature to do a comparison of the two ranges. But I would be interested to know your opinion of the feel, handling, between those two pencils, beyond the darkness of the blacks.
The difference in price reflects the difference in ease of use, particularly blending. They are expensive but the end result is incredibly different to cheaper brands. It’s a good idea to buy open stock for the colours you need to seamlessly blend and use cheaper brands for large areas of the same colour.
Love my luminance. Especially the way they go onto the paper. And I also would like to know how they compare to the Holbeins as one of the ladies asked before me. Claire, where did you buy the Derwent Lightfast Pencils? Despite Derwent saying they are available in the UK from July 3rd onwards I can only find them on the Derwent website.
Thank you for that thorough and lovely review. :D I've never clicked so fast on a new YT video because you announced you were going to review the Luminance in the last livestream I watched, where you were swatching the Karisma. How do the Luminance compare to the Karisma? They do look like cousins, don't they? I wonder how their performance might differ. :D
I will have to play with them some more to get a feel for how they compare with Luminance, but I'll definitely be mentioning it in my Karisma review xx
Love your comment but to say that there is an issue with erasing ... honestly... you can not expect to get pigment, layering, burnishing, etc... AND to be able to get it all off the paper... No coloured pencil leaves no trace (how could it?) and considering what the pencil does, I think it performs more that "good" on erasing.
golly peeters I realize this comment is a year old, so maybe you won’t see it, but something I’ve found is that I can lift the majority, if not all of the color, from Polychromos, with a vinyl eraser, but not at all from Prismacolors. I’ve also bought an eraser (I think it was by Tombow) that was sold as a colored pencil eraser. Unfortunately, it didn’t work well, but it does seem erasability can be a factor to be considered. Even though I like some of the colors from Prismacolors, I find myself sticking to Polychromos as much as possible, knowing that I can erase and edit as needed. ☺️
@@susannacole Oil based pencils have always been known to erase much better than wax! The lumi's have a higher wax concentration so that would make sense that wouldn't erase as well...but yes, the polychromos are fantastic at erasing!
Hello Claire, Thank you for your review. I've just bought a Luminance 76 set. I must say I'm a bit astonished with my first tries : Each pencil drops some pigments residues on the sheet. Some more than others. I absolutely didn't expect such a behavior. I've been working with Prismacolor for a long time and I know they tend to let such a deposition. But I've never heard someone who got this kind of issue with the Luminance ! Did you notice something like that ?
I just got my full set of these this month. I thought the lettering was going to be an issue but once I swatched them out I can look at my swatch and the ends of the pencils and pick the correct pencil I'm looking for every time.
Thanks, Claire for sharing! I was wondering what is the difference between the different Caran D’Ache pencils? Pablo, Luminance, Museum Aquarelle, and Superacolor II. Which would you recommend? Which water and non water sets do you like best?!?
Pablo are hard and have a mixture of oil & wax but mostly oil. Luminance are soft, highly lightfast wax & oil based pencils. Museum Aquarelle are Caran d'Ache's top quality water soluable pencil, whereas Supracolor are good but not as rich or vibrant. I'm not a big fan of watercolour pencils. Luminance are my favourites out of the lot x
Clair I can’t figure out which set to buy for myself for Christmas. Caran D'ache Supracolor , Luminance ,Museum Pablo? You are an expert . Or should I just get inktence ? In one review you sad that Pablo was hard and I am trying to find the best and softest pencils.
F V personally I think luminance is a fan favorite among the community. I feel like it’s the most notorious because it stands out because of how great it is. Still do your research and see which one you like best.
Holbein have the range, but Luminance are the superior pencil in my opinion. Very difficult choice! Try and get a few singles of each and see how you work with them. Holbein are harder than Luminance x
hello, what sharpener do you recommend for these pencils? i have the Faber Castell trio but not one of the 3 openings fit the luminances. thank you kindly.
Hi, wonderful review but I just wanted to add that swiss is not a language, we’ve got 4 national languages and the one written on the pencil with English is French :)
I know, I'm so terrible at Geography and languages and culture, I really don't mean to be and it's a source of huge embarrassment that this is on video forever now, lol, I will try to improve my knowledge!
Hi Claire if you could choose your pick between the Holbeins or the luminance and can only have one or the other which one would you choose? Thanks for sharing ❤️Tanya xx
Hi Claire thank you for an excellent video. I'm wanting to get some open stock of the luminance but can't decide what colours to get. What would you recommend? Thank you. Xx
Did you notice if a few of the colors are scratchy? I noticed 2 or 3 of mine are scratchy especially the castle earth, primrose and my white , witch is weird because everyone raves about the white,
I’m 14 years old and an aspiring artist I love portrait drawing and already have 72 prismacolours however I am looking for a new colouring pencil brand for Christmas this year. I’m considering these pencil but they are very expensive. Can someone please tell me if they are worth it ?
the caran dache luminance blends super easily and is a lot of artists choices. it's even better than he Holbein. it's amazing. but if u should get just some of them first because u need to get used to them. it would suck if u ruin an entire super expensive pack

F V personally I think luminance is a fan favorite among the community. I feel like it’s the most notorious because it stands out because of how great it is. Still do your research and see which one you like best.
I can get them for about $171 right now in the US. I’m not sure if I want to pull the trigger or not though because of all of the tans and browns. 🤔
Trying to decide, Between Luminance and Holbeins. Which would you prefer?
Holbein have the range, but Luminance are the superior pencil in my opinion. Very difficult choice! Try and get a few singles of each and see how you work with them. Holbein are harder than Luminance x
Beautiful pencils and amazing video
May I ask, have you repurchased May since this original set? Thank you so incredibly much
Barely any! I think Buff Titanium Black and White, that’s it x
@@ColourwithClaire oh wow! but you use them a lot dont you?
what is the best sharpener for these pencils?
Really awesome review. Thank you very much
hello,
what sharpener do you recommend for these pencils? i have the Faber Castell trio but not one of the 3 openings fit the luminances.
thank you kindly.
I use the grey swordfish manual sharpener x
Can you recommend a wax based pencil that’s the same as prismacolour but has better build quality but isn’t as expensive as these?
just started getting innto drawing and coloring and i want these badly lol
Brilliant revue
what's ur favourite colouring pencils for portraits.
I'm definitely asking Santa for this
Me too
Hi, wonderful review but I just wanted to add that swiss is not a language, we’ve got 4 national languages and the one written on the pencil with English is French :)
I know, I'm so terrible at Geography and languages and culture, I really don't mean to be and it's a source of huge embarrassment that this is on video forever now, lol, I will try to improve my knowledge!
Muito bom o seu Review, sua explicação sobre como trabalhar melhor com esses lápis foi de grande ajuda! Acabei de me inscrever no sei canal!
Thank you for the discount
Thanks for the review 😊
Do you know how they compare to Holbein pencils?
I need to get them both out & do some comparisons x
the Holbein has better colours. but it breaks sometimes and doesn't blend as well as the caran dache luminance
Amazing video. I am an artist and I paint with acrylics❤
Ty
Hi Claire if you could choose your pick between the Holbeins or the luminance and can only have one or the other which one would you choose? Thanks for sharing ❤️Tanya xx
Hard because the Holbein have more colours but I like the way the Luminance lay down! Would go for Luminance because of the high Lightfastness c
Are these pencils comparable to Derwent Drawings?
They are soft like them, yes xx
Polychomos are really bad ...trying to read the color hahahahahahah Love this Video ...Thank you so much for sharing xxxxxxx
Very informative thank you.😀
Hi mine just arrived! An ive got to go to work😔 i want to play! Lol
I am so buying these
do you have the caran d’ach pablo. If you do please could you do a review
I already reviewed them, they weren't for me x
Colour with Claire. Which colour would you say is nearer to a skintone colour
O do declare great pencils ,but in Australia that set is $471.00.
Hi Claire thank you for an excellent video.
I'm wanting to get some open stock of the luminance but can't decide what colours to get. What would you recommend?
Thank you. Xx
They make the best red I've ever seen.
Hi, are you wanting brights, skin tones, ??
Skin tones or tones for colouring leaves.
Oop for got to say thank you
I WANT THEM.
how many layers can you do with polychromos ?
It really depends on the paper
Thank you for not adding a muzak track below your voice. Many creators do this now routinely and it is beyond annoying and distracting.
Did you notice if a few of the colors are scratchy? I noticed 2 or 3 of mine are scratchy especially the castle earth, primrose and my white , witch is weird because everyone raves about the white,
My Cassel Earth is scratchy too but the others are fine x
My white is scratchy and it makes me sad :(
I know right! It makes me sad too, especially because they were so expensive. I kinda wish i bought a different brand=(
Why the peice on amazon is higher
I’m 14 years old and an aspiring artist I love portrait drawing and already have 72 prismacolours however I am looking for a new colouring pencil brand for Christmas this year. I’m considering these pencil but they are very expensive. Can someone please tell me if they are worth it ?
This set in particular has wonderful colours for portraiture xx
Colour with Claire thank you 💗
the caran dache luminance blends super easily and is a lot of artists choices. it's even better than he Holbein. it's amazing. but if u should get just some of them first because u need to get used to them. it would suck if u ruin an entire super expensive pack
+hell bumhole than the holbein*
+Clodagh 2004 hope this helpa
