Luminance vs Lightfast [BEST Colored Pencils]

  • I have been so excited to do this colored pencil battle-Caran d’Ache Luminance vs Derwent Lightfast! These are quite possibly two of the best colored pencils in the world. They are artist grade pencils with some of the highest lightfast ratings. Both Caran d’Ache and Derwent thoroughly test their pencils according to the highest lightfast standards-ASTM 6901 & Blue Wool. (Luminance uses only the 6901 standard, and Derwent uses both standards.)
    So let’s test them using our popular Coloring Bliss “Colored Pencil Battle” head-to-head worksheet! Which brand do you think will win? Comment below. Both Steve and I were honestly surprised by the results.

    I have both of these sets. I bought smaller sets, combined them and filled in with open stock where I saw gaps in the color range. They work beautifully together and you can find online color-ordered sheets of both collections combined. I find the Lightfast has a great range of landscape colors where Luminance has a great range of portrait colors. Harry at The Art Gear Guide has a great article comparing the color ranges side-by-side. Your comparison along with Harry’s provide very comprehensive information for these sets. Thanks for putting this video together!

    I’m not surprised that luminance won, but I was surprised at how close it was! This was exactly what I wanted to see, a really good look at the Derwent lightfast. Thanks! So now I’m curious how it compares to prismacolor…. ;-) Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

      I’ve always been a Prismacolor girl. I recently got the Derwent lightfast and couldn’t believe how creamy they were! I love them and I was not expecting to.

      I did the test myself and got different results probably because I used a lighter hand and different paper. None of my Lightfast left crumbs and layered many times on my smooth paper. Every single one of my Luminance pencils left crumbs. Luminance did not layer well on my Smooth Bristol paper. Even my Prismacolor did better on Smooth Bristol and got very few crumbs. I love using my smooth paper so I wont be using Luminance on it.

    When pencils are this expensive for me the lightfastness is the reason to buy them, so I would have been very interested in knowing which set had the most highest rated pencils and how many there were of any other level rating too.
    When comparing the color ranges I wish there could be a swatch sheet with all the colors on 1 page.
    I would also like knowing which colors were not in both sets. If you were buying open stock which ones to buy so you had all the colors without duplicates.
    For future comparisons I would be interested in both these sets vs polychromos.

    Seeing the Lightfast swatches was super interesting and quite surprising. I loooove those dark greens and blues and I never noticed that the range is lacking bright and pastel colors. I just picked the most unique looking colors to add to my Luminance (as you said many artists do).
    Speaking of, a video on the most unique colors from each brand would be interesting for those of us that can't justify buying the full set of each brand.

    • @demi3115

      @@demi3115 Didn't see this comment earlier but this argument is not well thought out. What colored pencils aren't intended to be layered? And if pastel colors are unnecessary because they can be achieved by layering, then why does the set even include more than a cyan, magenta, yellow, white and black pencil?

    • @The_Lion_And_The_Lamb

    Thank you Jennifer and Steve for all the work you both do to bring out these type of content! As someone who lives in a country where a single Luminance cost $6-7 and Lightfast even more so, owning either of them is honestly just a dream for me, getting to see how different the two brands compared with each other is extremely useful in getting a good judgment between those two beautiful brands. Thank you!💗

    • @daelite69
      @daelite69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I combined both sets into a large set. Lightfast are more muted tones and Luminance vibrant tones. I also don't notice a difference in barrel size when using them. They are different, but I expect that with different brands.

    • @Mirrigold
      @Mirrigold 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally this! I use mine for completely different types of art subject but they also work fabulously in companion with each other.

  • @joannaplichta9677
    @joannaplichta9677 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I would say, like many people, that the sets complement each other. Derwent Lightfasts have a better pallette for natura journaling, landscapes, wildlife, scientific illustration; also a greater ability to keep a point, which is useful in such drawings. They definitely lack good blues for flowers. Luminances have better blues, but worse greens. They also have lots of portrait colours. As far as quality is concerned both have their issues. Caran d'Ache Luminance have from time to time a pencil that is practically useless due to being really scratchy. LIghtfasts don't have such obvious issues, but their pastels are very waxy. So it's really good to have both sets.

    I know I am watching this after it's main stream but I wanted to say something about the easy on the hands thing. As someone who loves to color but also suffers from carpal tunnel, those little extra things like having to twist a pencil more or applying a harder pressure to get the same effect can be more strenuous on the hands. I would imagine this could speak towards anyone with hand or wrist issues. Overall I was surprised by this battle. It was very close indeed.

    First , thank for making he video, I know I'm a little late for comment. Luninance pencils are more opaque and that's the reason I went with Lightfast few months ago, no regrets at all, meaning I can build more layers with Derwent pencils to mix colors also a core a little bigger core. No doubt both pencils are phenomenal, high end both. My humble opinion Lightfast is the choice to make, the difference in price between them and the pros you brought to light, does not justify spending money on the Caran D'Ache if you getting Lightfast on a tin like I did, again my very own opinion. I'm not bashing Luminance at all, have their 40 set plus I don't like to see color crumbs on my paper.
    You always make informative videos, thank you for your work, I've watching your channel for a bit, keep it guys! (including your husband 😀).

      I believe the paper being used and the lightness of hand plays a huge role in the outcome. I used both of my sets on Smooth Bristol and got different results. I bought Luminance based on this review and since I invested and tried them, I am not impressed. I like using smooth Bristol and even Prismacolor left fewer crumbs, layered better and did not cake up on it. My Lightfast left no crumbs at all and layered more times. It never did start caking and leaving clumps. Some pigments like the Oranges and Blues are also more pigmented and can get a darker value.

    Steve and. Jennifer, Thank you for this great video. I LOVED the NitPicky comparison! As to further comparisons, I would really like to see Luminance up against the Faber Castell Polychromos. Polys are also very highly lightfast and have a great selection of colors and are great artist grade. pencils. In my area the Polys are less expensive than the Luminance and it would be. great to see if the Luminance are worth the extra $$. Also, it would be great to know how many pencils are the Excellent Lightfast grade in both sets as opposed. to lesser grades of lightfast. Thanks again! and Congratulations! on having the full set of the two very best color pencils in the world!!! Two last quick questions: Do you plan to put these two sets together to make one massive set in color order? If so, would you do a tritones set of Color Wheel all swatch pages containing both?

    Can I just say... I love pencils that aren't coated, where you can see the grain of the wood? And the Luminance are just so pretty, the way they print all the information on them. It's pretty clear they're both REALLY high quality sets of artist pencils which is probably why they're SO close in quality! Speaking of which... have you tried Cezanne pencils, or Hippie Crafter's? Hippie Crafter has a set of oil based that seems ridiculously cheap- 72 pencils for a whole 25$

They are soooo freaking beautiful..!!I have the Polychromos and maybe their lightfast qualities of these are the best ( as they claim 80% have a LF1 bleu wool standard) but their colors feel a bit garish to me and some of their colors are a bit reluctant to be laid down on paper.
    But yeah if you want the best color pencils in the world you should have both sets. They one I have are both so stunning 😍! Maybe the Luminence is just a bit easier to put down?

    Jennifer, great video! I was wondering though……between the 76 and 100 set, what pencils are missing to make a difference between investing in one or the other. Is the additional cost for the 100 set worth the estimated $75 more for the 24 pencils? What is your thoughts……or anyone else? Thanks!

    I haven't tried the luminance as yet as coming from a not U.S country, I would have to pay not only an arm and a leg but Im pretty sure a couple of toes for good measure lol and I have done my own mini head to head but with the Derwent Lightfast ( 12 set) and the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor (24) and they are a close dupe for the Derwent lightfast they are very close and in some areas look almost as if its the same pencil, if you can do a video on comp pencils for the high end brands, as there are a lot of Artist like myself that are on a budget but want quality . Great vid btw very informative as per usual

    Epic review and super helpful as I'm preparing to transition to lightfast pencils now! To add my nitpicky-ness, the Derwent wooden box joint is a finger joint, not dovetail (referring to your unboxing video). 😮😅

    Your price difference is the wood box. This was a great review. I like when apples are compared to apples. My eyes could see why a professional artist might own both sets. It seems like Derwent colors are more earthy for landscapes for example wher CD appear more vibrant.BTW I'm just a hobbyist so my description might be off.

    Has anyone done a 1:1 comparison of the full sets? I would love to know how they each fill the other’s “gaps” vs which ones color match. Another good video would be a similar color comparison if I was interested in adding some of either to my Polychromos set, rather than splurging for the whole set.
    I love getting full sets of things because it is over all more cost effective but this would be invaluable information for those of us who have to slowly build our collections.

    Is it possible to test how they do for details like straight lines .. do they keep a fine line after drawing lines several time ? Thank you :)

    I really love Luminance, especially for skin tones. I feel they are easier to use than Lightfast for portrait work, especially when I first started, but now I can use both properly but I "get there" faster with Luminance. I have to do a reverse rule of thirds whenever I use ANY oil dominant pencil like Lightfast (and even Poly Chromos) to get the best gradient transition. Meaning I start with the darkest tone first, then go mid-tone then go light and at the seams of the tonal transition I "scuff together" to blur the layer. Lightfast are more dominate oil so I do not find that they "blend" as well as Luminance but that might just be the way I do it. I noticed you did not use a OMS test. I love using OMS with Luminance. It works with Lightfast, but for me not quite as well as Luminance. Both are wonderful, but I love my Luminance best, but maybe it is just because they are one of the first pencil sets I bought and I got spoiled with them. As a rule I use them together, much like I use my Poly Chromos and Prisma together. I lay down my oil dominate pencils first and then I top layer with my waxier pencils. BTW the crumbs never bother me. I just sweep them away with a make up brush.

    The super dark lightfasts are great if you like shading botanicals. I picked them up open stock.

    My personal idea on scoring the light fastness of a pencil should not be between if it had 1 high standard test or two but more importantly, how many of each individual colour score better, is more light fast and has a higher rating. Yes I'd be very interested in that result between these 2 brands. This was an excellent informative video. I especially liked seeing the colour swatches of each as which cemented my preference, of Luminance, as I prefer a more vibrant colour range. Thank you for such an in-depth comparison and the chance to win a FULL set of Luminance 💜🌹💜🌹
    PS. I love....LOVE your hair colour💜💜💜

    May I ask, does anyone know if the luminance or lightfast hold a sharper point for longer? And your experience which is better layering? And which you prefer? So sorry for the questions but would love someone’s opinion!!

    Great content as usual. I was actually not surprised by the results. As you stated, both are good sets of which I hope to have completely some day. I currently have a few more of the Luminance than the Lightfast. Also in the intro, Rose looked as though she was recovering from a hangover after a long night of partying. She is so adorable.

    I might be a little bit biased towards the Luminance pencils (the bestestest pensils in the world for me), but I actually don't like wooden boxes. Most of the time I am not keeping my pencils in their boxes, but when I do, I prefer sturdy cardboard over anything else. I simply don't have enough space to store something as big and heavy as the Derwent box. And if you'd just throw away the packaging, I feel like the cardboard is more easy on the environment. It would be great if you could choose if you want the wooden box or not and that would possibly mean the full set of Derwents would be a bit cheaper as well.

    Could you compare oil pencils with oil pencils ? Because of the final texture.. oil is different of wax.. could you compare lightfast with Holbein ? Thanks !

    Caran D'Ache on the black alcohol marker looks great. Would love to try doing a piece with them on a black paper! Thank you for the generous giveaway
