  • See a birds-eye view of Knottingley TMD in West Yorkshire. Like a number of similar depots, it's a fraction nowadays of what it used to be in the past however it is still active and used by DB. This once class 56 stronghold is still largely the same as it was back in the 80's and 90's.
All footage was captured in-line with current CAA rules for the size of drone used.
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

I only ever managed o get around that depot once back in the 80's but remember going to the bank and looking down to get what ever was on shed, something you can't do now. Also looks very strange with you panning out and doing a 360 that there are no longer any cooling towers visible.....all gone and just memories now. I hope it remains a signing on point for a while longer. It'd be great if another TOC got it and made use of it and give it a new lease of life....who knows.
Thanks for showing that one, great vantage point of the trackwork, ideal for those modelling Knottingley from days gone by.

Please read my comment. It's substantially more than a 'signing on point'
Another TOC? What's wrong with DB may I ask?

Great seeing the depot from the air. This was a depot I could never got round back in the eighties, even with an organized society. Only saw it from the top of the entrance gate and my last visit was 7th June 2006. I do enjoy your drone footage.

Nice vid. Genuinely shocked at the negative comments. Dating from 1967 the depot is relatively unchanged from its original design (a rare thing nowadays)
Starting with locomotives KY fuels and services 5 locos (+A exam when required) every 24 hour period for the intense biomass circuit and appleford flyash. The coaches on site are part of Riviera trains modifications to toilet compliance and window alterations. The wagon shed is in full service having recently repaied BVA wagons and is now on repair/service to intermodal flats tripped in from Wakefield Europort. The MPV is serviced here when on its Weedkilling/RHTT cycle. 50008 also lives here with RT 08704. Not so grim as it may look. Thanks.

Nice vid. Back in the 70's it was home to a small number of class 47's fitted with slow running gear to haul MGR trains to Eggborough power station. Never saw any of them anywhere else

What a sad place to look at compared to how it used to be
What is the facility used for these days if you don’t mind me asking

I’m not fully sure however it’s likely to be culled by DB at some point I’d say unfortunately looking at it.

Looks in good nick, compared to some others these days!! Quite weed , shrub, tree & grass free! A shadow of its former self though in not serving the purpose it was built for.

What drone do you use? Is it a sub-250 gram model like my DJI Mini2 SE. I agree that the depot looks depressing, like so many railway installations these days

    • @trainsplanes

Hi, yes I also use a sub 250g drone for the revised rules that apply to that size of aircraft. 👍

Same as it was in 80s and 90s....? Minus the state of the art traincrew accommodation block built in the mid 90s it was all steel and glass ...quite revolutionary for a traincrew block as we where use to ex steam shed accommodation blocks
