    I love Sagamore Double Oak, maybe too much. I allow my wife to make all the decisions. She gave me the ultimatum "Get rid of that whiskey or I'm leaving you". I just cant tell you how much I'm going to miss her.

      A double amen to both! The MWS Dark Pumpernickel Rye is amazing. I have a Seelbach's barrel proof pick that is glorious! Any of the JDSBBP bottles are guaranteed great. I find myself going to that so often, I feel guilty for being a "bourbon guy" and are worried someone will kick me out of the club.

      Middle West Spirits would definitely fit in the mix and be included in my barrel pick section. Their standard lower proof dark pumpernickel rye is great, but the barrel proof picks are absolutely outstanding.

    This video was going as smooth as Kashmir. I was giving you guys a Whole Lotta Love. Then I knew The Levee was going to Break when I saw that Black Dog of a bottle.. and I knew What Is and What Should Never Be. I was completely Dazed and Confused when I saw Sagamore Double Oak on this list. Maybe it was a Communication Breakdown because I didn't think you were a Heartbreaker. Yet, I still felt the need to run Over the Hills and Far Away, maybe as far as The Ocean. So while I might look like a Fool in the Rain, It's Nobody's Fault But Mine, but my Song Remains the Same. In My Time of Dying maybe on the Gallows Pole and maybe Trampled Under Foot, I will hold No Quarter when I say Thank You for all Good Times Bad Times. But Hey Hey What Can I Do I Can't Quit you guys Baby. So here's a like, a comment, and a cheers with All of My Love to my Friends, Josh and Erin 🥃!

    The Jack Daniels single barrel barrel proof rye was one of the best whiskeys I tried in 2023. I have collected them in different proofs. A rye I would suggest you try is the BBC rye aged in new oak and cherry wood. Really good and reasonable for a higher quality rye (~$65).

    I got a sagamore 7 yr barrel pick, JDSBBP rye, Bulleit 12 rye, and Alberta premium Cask Str Rye... plus the 3 pack Michters 2023 (barrel proof, 10yo, and shelf rye). Think I've done pretty good in my rye choices. Haven't cracked the michters yet (Spent so much on it, gonna have to be a REAL special occasion to break that open)... but the JDSBBP and the Sagamore are really special and the Bulleit and AP are both up near the top of my whiskey collection. Starting to think I'm a rye fan.
    JDSBBP Rye actually lasted near me (dropped early 2024)... Almost a month on shelves. I spent a month looking for a 140 proof bottle and could have easily bought 2-3 cases of 125-136 proof bottles, at a leisurely pace. I assume when they release it next it'll sell faster (more people aware of it now)... but I also assume they're gonna be bottling a lot more moving forward.

    My perfect rye collection:
    Old forester 100 great sipper or cocktails.
    Redwood empire emerald giant. A great 95/5 style.
    Willet 4 year family reserve. A rich lovely end of week pour
    Knob Creek single barrel pick - 115 proof nice high proof hitter.
    I also like baby saz with 7up.
    Could switch saz or emerald giant for wild turkey 101 rye as well if availability or budget constraints

      As a chronic interrupter... It's not that we mean to do it...we're just so absentminded that when a thought occurs to us through the usual fog that exists in our minds... we realize if it doesn't get said immediately; it'll be gone by the time we get our chance to speak. IE: Interrupting is the only thing that keeps us from staring vacantly ahead (possibly drooling) during most conversations.

      Haven't tried the SB Rye, but I have the SB whiskey, the SBBP whiskey and the SBBP Rye. SB Whiskey is ok... not a bottle I'll replace. SBBP whiskey is decent... DEFINITELY worth the (minimal) price increase over the SB... but again, probably not good enough I'll replace it (I prefer a half dozen cheaper bottles)... but SBBP Rye is a bottle worth stockpiling. If they get it to be shelf-available... it'll be the "Rare Breed" (Bourbon, not Rye) shelfer equivalent for ryes... A bottle that just makes 99% of everything else on the shelf unnecessary because it's so much better.

    What JD rye flavor profile is the barrel proof closest to or is all JD Rye the same, just different proof or age? Only had the JD Bonded rye & it is good, though OF rye is just as good or better. So based on that, not sure what barrel proof option to get, if can only get 1? The JD barrel proof rye seems to be $20-30 less than OF Barrel proof rye & easier to find. Kinda of strange being the JD Bonded rye cost much more than OF rye, both 100P.

      We find the barrel strength Old Forester rye to be more rye forward whereas the Jack barrel proof rye leans toward a sweeter bourbon-esque profile. Both feel a lot different than their lower proof counterparts due to both proof and age with a lot more depth and richness.

As with anything though, batches and single barrels can vary, and it's always a bummer when you get a dud of a bottle.
      No tips for getting Michter's more special ryes other than 1) paying up for them, or 2) going by the distillery often and hoping you luck into one if you happen to be in or near Louisville. They're some of our favorites too but almost impossible to find short of paying inflated prices.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Welcome to bourbon! As far as truly smoky bourbons that can rival smokey Scotches, there isn't anything that we know of. That said, when bourbon gets the right amount of age and barrel char influence, it certainly has its own unique kind of magic, albeit not as heavy-handed as peat. We love a good peated Scotch ourselves, for reference, and some of our favorite bourbons are single barrel picks that have this unique barrel char influence. As for available products that exhibit that note, it's tough. It's definitely something you find on more special release bottles of bourbon, particularly barrel proof offerings. It would be nice if distilleries catered to that profile a bit more in their core offerings.

    • @Lithanify
      @Lithanify 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stuffandwhiskey Going down the Char path... I have heard that a #5 Char is starting to be requested from cooperages by some distilleries. Might be worth investigating what, if any, bourbon makers are using those barrels (Seems most bourbons use #3 or #4, so potentially there'd be more smoke character than normal if a #5 is used). Buff Trace apparently did an experimental bourbon in #7's... but I have no idea where to find it. One time release, limited production, and one of the best whiskeys bottles in the history of whiskey is definitely going to bring a hefty premium. $4500 is quite a lot and they were all over $3000ish not long ago. Luckily they've fallen to $1500-2000 lately and it would be great if they continue to slide into sub-$1000 territory. I'd actually consider splurging on one if they got to $800ish in total honesty. It's something truly unique and special, and while most things aren't worth any kind of price premium IMO, there are the rare few bottles that are worthy of "special bottle" pricing and it's certainly one of the few.

    • @Lithanify
      @Lithanify 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stuffandwhiskey I don't buy into the whole Magic Barrel belief with anything. If Beam wanted to produce more of this stuff; they could, and it'd taste roughly the same (As close as any other blended product does batch to batch).
      And if they really thought it was worth $1000+, and it would sell out @ that price if they dropped additional batches, they absolutely would be producing more of it. But who knows; maybe they are; and it's kept hush hush....
