      Right. And the ending of the marriage speaks volumes. My husband and my daughter have lived in a beautiful spacious 2 bdrm, an Expedition, (briefly), now a small apartment, and working on building a tiny house in the future. We reside in a big city however. The loss of material items although difficult, brought us closer not further apart. While 50 things is a bit extreme for us, downsizing and focusing on not being consumed with stuff, has been a great choice for our lives. When your love runs deeper than possessions, it's amazing the amount of luxuries you can deal without.. Again, this is what works for us.

    • @ImAChristianFirst
      @ImAChristianFirst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      What it shows is the person he married didn't marry for love. So actually this was a greater purge than just material possessions. It purged a woman who didn't really love him. He could be wasting his life away on her.

      i think it's probably more complicated than that. he changed his whole way of life. i think he did it for a good reason and seems very happy, but it sounds like it was abrupt and not what she thought she was getting into. he has no bills. he lives in a family member's house for trade. these are all good things, but for a lot of people that would be too much. even in my most minimal dreams i have a bed, a (can be small) house of my own, and 7 pairs of underwear.

    I'll tell you guys something; growing up, I had everything. You name it, I had it. My father had great jobs: Real Estate broker, Insurance broker. He gave us the best anyone could have; my mother had mink coats and big diamonds, a massive collection of clothes and expensive shoes. My sister and I had toys upon toys upon toys. We wanted something, we just pointed and we got it.
    You would think this lifestyle would put an impression on us very early on that money is everything and our possessions defined who we were. My sister and I are now in our mid 20's, and live the life of minimalists. I can fit everything I own into 3 boxes; and I'm still trying to get down to my bare basics.
    My parents wonder how their kids can live without so much or how we could be content with almost nothing when we grew up with everything you could possibly imagine having. Oh, well. Minimalism is a grand lifestyle!

    • @ilovenoodles7483
      @ilovenoodles7483 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's good that you came from a very wealthy family and had everything.
      I would like to have all that money, but I would like to still be somewhat minimal and spend it differently.
      I'd spend the money on tithing, a good debt-free eduacation for my children and me, and the rest of my family, any licenses or any thing needed to conduct business, eating healthy food, since a satiating carb and fat filled, non-nutritive burger is $1, but a nutritious, beautiful salad is $10-15 a pop.
      I'd get healthy and maintain it, by having money to fix my teeth and spend on healthcare, etc.
      I'd also spend money on traveling the world, and the very basic expenses associated with that, like the inevitable cost of a visa, a passport, transportation, and good food, clean water, decent lodging, and emergencies, like any money needed to accommodate a flight cancellation or such.
      Stuff, materialistic possessions, cannot replace the joy of seeing and enjoying God's great creation of the world and being healthy enough to do it, with the people that you love and the people that God puts in your path.

    • @CruzzioXT
      @CruzzioXT 10 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yes, because an own room for the teenage son is such an "extra". Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of minimalism and try to pratice it, but this guy is being selfish. He's putting himself before anybody else in the family. Only because he thinks he's doing it the right way, it doesn't mean that his kids have to conform to it.

    • @kargelr
      @kargelr 10 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      He does go further than I would personally. But I will say this: Kids are not in charge. Parents make these decisions until such time as a kid turns 18 or gets emancipated. My main thought was about his parents and sister, though. Why critique a life choice that clearly makes him happy? They are not harmed.

    • @tonyranton2204

      biscuitdave I could call it a light judgment. It doesn't mean you dislike someone it just means you think it's silly or a bit extreme, something most people do to some degree on anything they disagree with. You can see someone with tons of tattoos and wacky clothes and think it looks horrible yet also think it does not matter. They can do whatever they want regardless if we think it looks silly.

      It is wrong when the father is limiting the quality of his sons life. How is the boy supposed to bring a girl over when he doesn't even have his own room? He isn't doing his son a favor. Minimalism is about stripping down the unnecessary, not the necessary.

    A bit extreme, borrowing feels like a cheat because it could say you need that item often enough. However if it's a once in awhile thing it could be seen like renting an item there is no point in owning. Also sounds like one is trying to hard by denying items he could use to have some magic number. I'm all about sliming back yet there are clothes, bedding, pots pans, dishes, tools, home care, cleaning items, tech like a laptop, phone etc.. no photo albums, paperwork?
    I think one can be practical without going too far because NOT having enough basic useful items can make life harder as well. I likely could fit everything I like, use and need in a small room.

      The funny thing is he is happy. He is connected with his kids maybe for the first time. While he was a slave to the dollar, he probably was detached mentally, emotionally and physically from his family while his missus got all those benefits and the lifestyle. His kids will be fine, They had a little hardship but they might have learned some great lessons. There is nothing certain in life. He looks like a man that loves life, what is a better example for your children than that.

    It's amazing when you realize how much stuff and space you actually Need. Also much attachment we have to stuff we dont need. It feels good to release it. Stuff comes and goes like currency. When stuff can't flow, it's resistance. Just like money flows in and out. Abundance isn't How much stuff one has. It's about getting what you need when you need it. One can be abundant without having much because it's irrelevant to them. Our material items typically cause stress and limit our freedom. The less stuff and the less space, the less it costs to maintain. The more time and freedom one can have. We create our reality

      I think having a number goal isn't realistic, because everyone has different hobbies and needs. If you don't have a hobby or a certain job you may not need much. However, if you like to hike, camp, photography, etc you may need things just for that. What is a better way is to just look at your stuff and say I haven't used this in a year. I need to get rid of it. Like you I have things that have been sitting around for a long time. Those things need to find another home.

      Why 140? Why not...130? Or 440? Or 40? I don't understand this fascination with "number of items" or to work on that as as a goal. Is it not better to say-" I will have only what I need and find useful"???? Which for each person could be a different number, as all our lives are different!!!!! My take away from all this is to purge, purge purge until I have only things that are useful in my life. I cannot set a number, as my life continues to evolve and my needs change. I think as long as I have the awareness , and I carry it with me all the time, the number of items is irrelevant.

    He is NOT what minimalistic living is about. He says, it's been "very, very painful for my children." His own kid said he'd like to live some place he feels comfortable going into the kitchen. That poor kid. This guy just went from one way of living where he put himself first to another way of living where he put himself first. Also, he said 'a few more pairs of underwear would be nice.' Seriously...minimalism is not about denying yourself and making life harder on yourself. It's not about focusing on having a certain number of things. It's not about making your family unhappy. Ugh. This guy is why people don't understand minimalism.

    • @ImAChristianFirst
      @ImAChristianFirst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree. I strive for minimalism, but minimalism is about reducing life's unnecessary things to increase happiness. As a Christian materialism distracts me from God. Living a simple life is less of a burden on the entire family. When you have a lot of stuff you spend a lot of time maintaining it. One thing you have to watch out for in minimalism is becoming addicted to it. You can make that your focus just like materialism. I think Jesus said it best when he told us to be content. Paul said it best when he said be content in any given situation.

      I think it's "his" way of minimalism. It's different from person to person, I guess. Some go for 100 things, others less, others more. What's important is that you are happy with what you have and a sense of contentment. His kids though, probably didn't really have a choice since they're with him. For them, they would want a little bit more but he mentioned he's working on getting an apartment which shows he is also considerate to his kids. I think he is on a phase (including the fasting and all that), I guess that's why he isn't understood by many. :)

    • @WilderhopeAdventures
      @WilderhopeAdventures 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Your comment eloquently explains what was going through my mind as I was watching this. Either way...consumerism or extreme minimalism the focus is one stuff; either having it or not having it, and neither is healthy. I am not what I would think of as a minimalist, at least not intentionally. I just have never liked having stuff and find it mostly irritating when I can't just easily pack up my truck and move somewhere new. IMO minimalism is about having what you need and what evokes a feeling of happiness, and not focusing life on buying or keeping that which you don't need or [really] want.

    I just started my journey a year ago. I own so much clothes and shoes and makeup bcus I worked retail and had huge discounts. I was thinking i would be preparing for the dark times of not been able to buy anything. I clutter sooo muchhh! I was miserable everytime i entered my room! I felt like i was missing air in my own room. So i decided i needed to change bcus i felt overwhelmed with so much things around me. I got rid of half of my stuff! I gave them as gifts and some were donated. I wish i would get rid of more but I have this mentality of the poor girl that was the only one dress badly within her friends and classmates. So it’s really hard for me to get rid of all the new things i haven’t wear. I just decided as the things wear off and finish I will get rid of them. I’m going on my own pace. It has take me 2 years to get rid of everything I have had an excess of. But I’m so happy with how having less had made me feel. I’m changing little by little!

    What is important is having things that let your soul flourish. As Marie Kondo calls it, "spark joy" or tokimeku in Japanese. The guitar his son kept is an example of a soul-flourishing item because if you spend time creating music and it makes you happy, that's letting more of your passion and uniqueness come out into the physical world. If an item steals away from your soul or life force, it takes more than it gives back, whether it's money, time or happiness for example this might be a collection of ugly shoes that are for a special occasion you may never have, clothes that fit badly or don't flatter your personality, or a craft kit you've never used or enjoyed.
