Bernice, thank you, I have been trying for the longest time to find this little gem of Sam’s. I saw Islands in 2009 and decided this kid had a giant talent inside him. This heart-string war movie just reaffirmed what I had known all along that he would be a star! Wow! Thanks
For this wonderful experience! Here in the States, it dordis often difficult to find older British films, that aren't quite old enough! Most of the time I like British films better than what Hollywood churns out! If I do like them, they have major British star's playing lead roles! I also adore SMasterpiece. Now there's a good one for
Sam to star in a Masterpiece production! He is a true Renaissance modern man, so many talents, but I truly hopes he keeps acting for the rest of us! Again, thank you, & I'm sorry you had such an experience, but survived! I was 4 years old when the war ended. Everybody celebrated with tiny glasses of wine! Afterwards, I snuck into the kitchen and pour the small drops left in each glass ( I wanted to celebrate too) I got drunk on it ( my first drunk ) I got very sick too! I despise the taste today! Ha ha!! Just a little end of the war celebration story that taught me a big lesson! 😂
Just watched this movie (very good enjoyed it very much) Sam did an excellent job of acting in which I am not surprised. So happy for him the way his life has turned for him.He deserves the (Best of the Best)❤️👍💋
In his book "First Light" Wellum's account of that flight into terrible weather is the most gripping piece of aviation literature I've ever read.
It’s hard to believe Sam is 30 years old here! He looks so young! Great performance! I am glad I stumbled on this movie.
This was an incredible movie, Sam portrayed Geoffrey Wellum Superbly, this has special significance for me as my brother in law worked on Spitfires and kept them in perfect flying order, until he died aged 55, and I remember a spitfire flying overhead at his funeral! I was 30yrs.old. I was 6yrs. old when the war ended, but I remember certain aspects of it, like sirens, and bombs dropping, I also remember an enemy aircraft opening fire on my mother and me, while I was playing in our garden, the bullets narrowly missing us, he was shot down apparently about four miles further on! It’s things like that you never forget! and it is all thanks to those brave young men that I am here today, living in the U.K.
Hello Bernice. I saw that movie last night. Not only is it the title of the film, but Sam Heughan's "First Light" shines on his extraordinary talent. I am very sorry that you had such a bad experience as a child. My grandmother often told us children about the war and we were always scared. How scared you must have been then. I thank God that we live in peaceful times.

Yes I can still see the face of the pilot that opened fire on us he was that low, I have never held any animosity against that pilot, he was doing what he was ordered to do, and he died, and I lived! thank God as you say we live in peaceful times now, like you I thought Sam’s extraordinary talent shone through even then, as Kalisteau pointed out Sam was thirty then, but looked only twenty, he has always looked years younger than he is especially in ‘Outlander’ at forty he can still pass for twenty something, ‘skinny dipping’ proved that! he was very young in ‘Island at war’ which was when I first saw him, have admired him ever since, 🤭🤗👋

There is probably a little man behind YT who recommends both of us everything that Bernice has already seen. 😀 He has a lot to do there. @bernice best Fascinating! My mother had almost the exact same story about a pilot and seeing his face. She was 9 at the time and on the other side, living in Germany. Everything you said, she said. It’s remarkable, really.
In my opinion, his most profound movie! In his early thirties playing an 18 year old that convincingly takes huge talent and deep understanding. Geoffrey Wellum said of the movie, the very best ofthe Battle of Britain movies. 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌Brilliant. @SamHeughan!
I’m so glad I found this movie. One of Sam’s earlier bits of work but so so so well done. He brings so much heart and innocence to the characters he plays. And thank you to all the veteran pilots. Your service is much appreciated.

Sam gave another outstanding performance-a 30 year old actor playing a 18 year old fighter pilot!!! He was the youngest pilot, brave and dedicated as well. His 92 nd squadron proved to be extremely successful and the Battle of Britain proved to be a great stepping stone in defeating the Nazis!!! We all thank Geoffrey for his outstanding valor and for writing these truthful, beautiful words.

I loved this movie! ❤😂It really is underrated! Sam played this part from the heart as it should have been. Heroes often do not realize their own worth because they feel everyone else would have reacted as he did! Not everyone has integrity as part of their make-up! Sam knew this man’s heart. Bravo. Great to see Sam & Gary together before Outlander! This movie hit me right in my heartstrings. Even though I am an American, it is a good over evil theme and love of the country, that people can relate to and feel proud of! A beautiful gem of a movie

What a great movie. So many men fought for freedom and only a handful of their stories are told.
Best Sam's movie before the series, the RAF should be proud of him. We owe our freedom, as we have it in Europe now, to these brave kids. Sam is the best, we love him.🌺 couldn't find a poppy

I stand to be corrected but from the readings that I have persued "Welham" otherwise known as "Boy" was indeed the youngest RAF pilot but this pertained only to his participation in "The Battle of Britain" & not merely the RAF as a whole!! Again please correct me!!
I'm a huge Sam Heughan fan and I always wanted to see this movie. Thanks so very much for making it available to view. Sam did an AWESOME job in this movie as did Gary Lewis. I love history and this was a FANTASTIC war movie! While watching I found myself on pins and needles as to who would return to base and who did not. I cried right along with the airmen when they had to erase a fellow fighter pilot's name from the board. KUDOS to Sam!💞
Yes, I too had the same emotions watching the movie. I was born in 1944 on an army base in Georgia USA. My father was a doctor/paratrooper (so very handsome) but never spoke of the war and his experiences . Now I wish I had tried to talk to him about it. He died at 40 of a heart attack. It took me years to get over the loss. I have his picture on my nightstand next to my bed. He was a hero to me! I loved him so very much.

Ele e'igual vinho, quanto mais velho , melhor fica. A genetica dele e'muito boa. Mas, a beleza dele , nao passa por cima de seu talento.Foi preciso chegar a Outlander ,para que mostrasse o ator maravilhoso que e'. Well he would as he is British, he only went back to his Scottish accent with Outlander. Before that he mainly played parts that didn’t require it.

Where have you been? Lovely film about our brave RAF lads, many of whom didn’t come back. As a fan of Sam I have got it on DVD (bought it for my husband as he is interested in spitfires). Didnt tell him it was also for me to watch Sam’s earlier work. 🌸

The impact of war, no matter in the air or on the ground is so monumentally portrayed in this film. I am so proud of my father and the the men that he service with. War killed so many young men and those that lived carried with them the memories, they could not let go of. My father had nightmares of the war but never spoke of the moments in that time that changed him for ever. This is another memory that was brought to life, not in a glamouris way, but in the dedication and the true sense of duty that is a tribute to the young men of this era. I truly enjoyed seeing this film and l am so glad he was able to tell his story and be apart of this movie.

Brilliant and moving portrayal of young men in those turbulent times on which the freedom of our nation depended upon. Best representation of the Battle since the film of 1969 to my mind! Added bonus of learning some swearing in Portuguese too! :)

Sam’s performance in this movie was very moving and impressive, with a great deal of emotional intensity. The true story behind it was a great history lesson as well. I would have loved for the subtitles to have been in English, but I suppose I caught most of the dialogue, despite the accents and fighter pilot jargon.
You can adjust settings for automatic English subtitles. You can also set these subtitles to be translated into another language.
Automatic subtitles don't work very well in noisy scenes, or with lots of people talking at the same time. But they can help.
We are a Brazilian page, so the filme has subtitles in Portuguese.

Thank you so much for posting. I have wanted to see this film and figured I’d never have the opportunity. Such a debt of gratitude we owe to those who served. I especially liked the narrative provided by Geoffrey Wellum and the contrast between then and later in life. PTSD and the emotional toll it takes is recognized and treated today. Back then it wasn’t. But you know those men struggled just as much. I will enjoy watching this movie again. And Sam Heughan as well! He did look boyish!!

I wonder if the man who did the voiceover was Wellum. I don't know if this was WWII or WWI. (dummy me). If WWII then Jeff might still have been alive when this film was made. The article about him at the end should have given his birth and death dates. It just says he had a mental breakdown when he was only 20 yrs old and stayed in the RAF until 1961.
I'm a big fan of Sam Heughan's . He's such a wonderful actor. You usually don't find a terrific actor who's so good looking and with such a "happy go lucky" personality in real life. Enjoyed his show about Scottish goodies and his various interviews where his sense of humor shines. I wouldn't be surprised if he could again play a 20 yr old in one of his next films. He doesn't seem to age.

Um filme/documentário de dar orgulho. A atuação de Sam Heughan foi impecável.
As cenas são para retratar o quanto os tempos antigos eram violentos e o quanto progredimos como sociedade.
Na minha opinião engrandece o amor que Claire sente por Jamie, pois ela se submete a viver em tempos difíceis por escolha.
Quando houve aquela primeira cena de tentativa de estupro na mata e Claire teve que esfaquear seu agressor ficando extremamente perturbada por ter matado um homem, você consegue dar outra dimensão ao sentimento que ela tinha por Jamie, pois ela tinha oportunidade de voltar para um tempo mais seguro e agradável e mesmo assim, ela escolhe Jamie e o século 18.
A cena das cintadas que a Claire levou eram para retratar a mentalidade dos homens da época que consideravam surras maneiras de punição, coisas que aconteciam com as crianças até mais ou menos uns 50 anos, e em alguns lugares até hoje, tenho certeza.
De maneira geral esse realismo me faz gostar da série muito mais do que só fosse um romancezinho besta e água com açúcar.
