I don't know how anyone could think the filming of those types of scenes anything but tedious, uncomfortable and awkward. The fact that Sam and Caitriona are such professionals and even with all that awkwardness, and cameras and 20 people right in their space, can still play it all to perfection is a real testament to their commitment to the material, their talent and their sheer grit and determination.
Sam is very engaging and you can tell he has theater training by how he commands a stage and seems very comfortable in front of an audience. And the way he touches himself when he talks is alluring!!

I ve seen many actors expaining why sex scenes are hard to film. But only Sam explained it the way that actually I had an image in front of my eyes while he was talking. He was funny as well and he made me understand why all hot actors don't fall in love with each other. Intimate scenes are so bizarre, technical and boring for them that it doesn't cause attraction but opposite feelings maybe, sometimes. Its not helpfull for romance to blossom.

A love scene is far more sensual maybe without knowing what happens behind the scenes. We enjoy the magic, I enjoy the magic. The fact that I can easily forget it is just a movie is my praise and endorsement of your fine acting.
Gobyebo. As Sam Pointed out, it is blocking it out, step by step, cameraman in your face, or wherever, for hours. It is exhausting, not sexy as an experience.

I can't believe that this was the first intimate scene they filmed! There was so much in this- from the argument continuing; the coldness and rift between Jamie and Claire; the attempts to apologise; the promise made; the tension of their possible parting (should Claire have rejected the apology); that sudden connection that sparks when Claire acknowledges that she doesn't want to lickety-split; the warmth and sentiment of Lallybroch when Jamie explains the ring; to, at last, the reconnection of bodies (let alone the incident with finding the 'ill wish' after coitous). If this was the first scene these two filmed with just the two of them, it's one hell of a list of emotions and ideas that needed to be displayed! Heughan's explanation of the process of filming intimate scenes was so helpful though. The first time you watch you don't notice the lack of continuity too much. You're concentrating on the expression and emotion whilst waiting for the story to unfold. But when watching an episode a second or third time, I've often found many scenes a bit clunky (eg where their arms were or how their bodies were positioned didn't flow well from one nano-second or camera angle to the next). Thankfully I now have a bit more insight into why this occurs and will endeavour to be a bit more receptive.

THE EDITING IS SOME SERIOUS WORK
They also film in candle light which is probably another reason it takes awhile to get scenes right,and avoid dark shadows.

Damn! I can appreciate that filming love scenes takes a lot of work, but the way he described it, it really is boringly technical, and not the least bit romantic sounding. : p And I used to wonder why all actors didn't fall for each other during filming; Sam pretty much shattered that notion.

We'll have to add subtitles for you! Isn't it funny how we interpret accents so differently? I'm Australian and can understand every word Sam Heughan says here, though I met a couple of Scottish blokes at a pub a few weeks back and could barely pick up half of what they were saying!
loverlyme yea I'm American and his accent is comprehensible. It's not as thick as the show but even still I understand. But maybe it's easy if you have been around these accents or hear these accents often. Trained ears.

I'm happy I understood it very well 'cause my mother tongue is Portuguese, not English.
I am Polish and understand everything. pretty much I have no problem in understanding any off
the accents. Scottish, Australian, New Zealand, English, Irish, whatever. Funny huh.
