Playing as a Fighter in 'action' mode, it's very rare that the game doesn't react as I would expect. And I pivot my camera around a lot! On the other hand, when I bring out my ranged weapon, unexpected results happen more often. Final note: if they remove action mode, which I'm fairly happy with, then I'm history.
@@jamestarter8672 They promised true hybrid combat with aimed abilities for action and that we could play it similar to an action MMO should we pick 75% action abilities. They didn't deliver. Instead chose to have tab+ with almost no real 'action' similar to Archeage (which is no surprise considering Steven). It isn't even on GW2's level...which is still tab heavy but has some real action elements. Following the game closely for 6 years, I honestly can't trust anything coming out of Steven's mouth anymore. He is either too ambitious/clueless or deceitful.
Ranger's have a few skill shots, vine field, rain of death, bear trap, concentrated scatter shot, air strike. It's probably the most "hybrid" class in the game right now.
But is it really action focused though when your weapon performs the exact same way? All it really does is give you combat controls with the mouse, but the click/Q dont change how they interact with the target
I actually play in action combat as a bard. This is mostly due to a physical disability though. So Steven if you read this please don't change action combat
I typically agree with you and prefer your channel most to other contributors, but this time I have to staunchly disagree with you. I do like the reticle so far and would hate for it to stop existing. I unironically really enjoy how it works, for both melee and ranged. It reminds me a whole lot of how it was handled in Hellgate London and feels like a good, fair middle-ground; I do hope we can avoid the skill equivalent of controller versus keyboard in terms of tab versus reticle, but people should still definitely be rewarded with fresh gameplay that aligns more with their comfort level. I'd hardly call that a waste of time. Ranged reticle combat can use a little bit of polish but I think it's going in a good direction. If we can adjust how "sticky" or wide the zone of aiming is per target, that'd be nice.
as a fighter, "action target" combat is the only reason im playing this game and with a meele weapon the combat also feels quite good. blocking, dodging, targeting mobs or players i just look at (pvp is kinda bugged, i have to swap into tab target sometimes and click on them to be able to attack them in action combat) and many aoe action combat spells. like this i actually enjoy the game, bc. i would be instantly gone if i had to move my camera by holding a button and only be able to target by pressing tab.
So i play AOC exclusively in action mode as a tank main. I am a younger action combat andy. I played BDO (for a long time), i play ESO whoch is more of a soft lock action combat (similar to AOC) and ive played New World (for a short time) which is also action. I prefer action, i think its the superior way to play, that being said, i think AOC needs a bit of an adjustment with ranged action combat. I agree with you. I think ranged weapons should be more free firing. I dont like not being able to shoot whenever, wherever i want. And when im pulling mobs, i dont like how it sticks to the first mob i shoot. I have found a way to get around it, but i think they need to take a page out of ESOs book with soft lock. I also have that issue with melee action combat. Certain enemies have cast times that do a lot of damage, when im trying to stop it, sometimes my grab skill hits the enemy i wasnt trying to hit and i eat damage i wasnt intending to. Overall i disagree with you wanting to get rid of action combat. I know for old people tab is easier 🤭🤭🤭🤭 but for the younger generation action is more fun and it feels better. Just some slight tweaking would make action feel better and there are PLENTY of examples they could use as a guide to adjust their action combat
Tab targeting feels a bit clunky compared with hybrid combat for certain classes, especially fighter. I think what drives it apart the most is the camera movement, rebinding for easier readjustments mid fight & a more fluid combat experience. I don't mind the fact it's still got tab targeting aspects as that makes target management even in bigger mob groups still valid. Be interested to see the progress with it!
Absolutely agree with pretty much everything you said here. Especially the point about the hardlocking ranged weapons. Iam playing ranger rn and altough you have some "skillshots" like charged scattershot as another commenter said, its just not enough. Especially when your best rotation in pvp is pretty much snipe, spamming autoattacks with mark and barrage, which is all tabtarget. I really hope they include more useful skillshots.
Hmm I for one actually like the targeting system in ashes. It’s a lot more fluid than wow and it’s a lot less ummmm mashy I suppose than action combat. It makes you focus which I enjoy even though it makes watching anime difficult while playing 😂
I find tab isn't necessary especially for melee classes, I use a range weapon, but during phase 2 I'll probably make a ranged char and try to exclusively in action to get a feel. But tab is really a remnant for the older generation. I don't necessarily disagree with tab, but a lot of games are straying from tab, and a lot of the newer MMOs actually go action and dont have a tab option. I like hybrid more because it hits best of both worlds, but I do think AOC needs to work on their action combat. I think they put most of their time in tab, and not enough into action. I also wonder if they have devs who have played more action combat than tab, because if they do, they would be able to tell right away that their action just isn't up to par as any other games and it needs work
@@Tilley53 well i think fine mix of both is fine i agree for melee classes action is go to but im playing mage and bard its true i didnt play that much but imagine healer unable to just click on a raid group who they wanna heal during the combat or something would suck atleast from my POV and full tab would kinda suck for melee thats why i thing mixed combat is good but its needs to improve melee still feels kinda bad
@DejvidR6 No, i fully agree, I think mixed is best, and also, I think melee action needs plenty of work. I stated in my comment outside of yours that I think they should take a look at ESO action combat and try to mimic it in a way. Because ESO allows you to heal certain people with direct abilities (mind you, it's a small number) that feels clunky but it's possible to do, I think AOC just put too much time into tab and not enough into action. And they can easily just make it feel better by mimicking ESO combat, but tweaking it a bit for in this example healers. I would like for myself to be able to play healer action and be able to look directly at my target and heal them, or if there are enemies in the way the game understands I want to heal my ally not heal the enemies. I do however understand it gets convoluted when you have multiple allies right next to each other. But if they can at least implement the first 2 things I mentioned, and then maybe I'd have to switch to tab for bigger groups or clumped members, I'm fine with that
@@Tilley53 makes sence combat will still change alot before the full relese soo ppl will be able to play in action all the classes prob atleast i hope so...but yeah when there is alot to alies on the screen it gets hard to target who u actually want with action.. but when it comes to PvE i would also preffer being able to play ranged classes in action but it needs work.. they slowed down a little currently prob since they are working on running A2 fixing bugs and all that takes time away from developing new stuff ..and tab target is just easier to perfect soo it got more focus at the start my guess
They spent 3 years working on action combat with BR apocalypse And another 2 years shifting into prototype of GW2 tab-target combat If you ask more or better combat it will only delay the game by another decade.

As you said, what they have now is not ''hybrid combat'' although they're trying to brand it as such. Current iteration is pretty much tab targeting with action camera and you're actually punished for using action camera. Truly disappointing. I agree that they should just remove action camera altogether since it's a joke. Though might as well keep it since some enjoyed the ''feeling'' of it :p look mom! i actually land my skillshots! ofc you do little timmy...ofc you do.

I only play action and feels great, you have built ur opinion on a extremely narrow down experience ur own hahaha
Yeah, the action combat right now is not action combat. It's all tab target. Action camera just tab targets what you look at, and even then , you still need tab to cycle between targets.
I don't think hybrid combat is ideal. We saw an attempt at hybrid combat with Throne and Liberty, and that game's combat is very clunky. I believe that trying to appeal to everyone by making a hybrid of the two could in theory work, but in practice would be very hard to pull off. I think Intrepid should just go all in on action combat with some tab targetting elements, similar to how guild wars 2 does it. Guild Wars 2 combat holds up after 12 years because it was designed with the intent for skill expression to be a cornerstone of the gameplay. Since this game is intended for a more hardcore audience, I think that would be a very ideal route for Intrepid to go as well. OG Tab targetting isn't without skill expression, but action combat simply has much more.
if anything game is made more for tabtargetting full action mode would be bad .. im newer guy when it comes to MMOs only played new world its hard to get used to tab targetting but when it comee to large scale MMOs its a must even if it feels worse to play.. i didnt really play much soo far but combat feels pretty good soo far .. i think main problem with action modee is when its a large scale pvp how can u ever target enemy backline if u are lets say ranger? and tbh action mode feels good on figher and would suck on mages and classes like that
@@DejvidR6 Tab targetting exists to some degree in most mmos, even ones with majority action combat. Gw2 is considered action combat because of the way skills are designed, World of Warcraft isn't because it relies heavily upon tab targetting for skills to land. In WoW, you acquire your target and as long as you are in range and your target isn't breaking line-of-sight, the skill lands. In guild wars 2, there's a diverse range of skill types including skill shots, skills that can be cast without a target, and high liberty of movement with the about face mechanic that make it more dynamic and layered than traditional tab targetting only mmos. In WoW, for the most part, if you don't have an enemy targetted, the skill will not land. It has a lot to do with how skills interact with hitboxes and how the skills are designed in the first place, which determines the type of combat. The whole action camera mode vs strictly tab targetting thing is just silly, and both should be disgarded.
throne is not pure tab targetting, it has skills that can be executed and hit without a target, they are just clunky. The issue is many skills that would make sense to be able to be cast without a target require a target and vice versa. Wouldn’t make sense for a game with large scale world pvp to have only tab targetting anyway. Guild Wars 2 is technically hybrid but definitely more on the action side.
The current functionality of the action mode doesn't feel good. It feels like it is being held back by the tab targeting core design system. I wish the game was just one or the other. Seems like currently it is just a huge compromise. IMO Tab targeting in Archeage was actually really good and action combat in BDO is really good. But neither of these games are trying to do both. GW2 does a good job at a hybrid system but I don't think GW2 is a better than the former mentioned games are at their respective designs. It is going to be a challenge to achieve a hybrid system that is functional, rewarding and balanced in both modes.
@@jamestarter8672 Feeling good one one class IMO validates my points. It is not enough to feel good one one class and not all the others. That is a recipe for disaster and is a clear sign the direction and choice of a hybrid system is flawed. I'm happy for you enjoying it on Fighter. Hopefully they can prove my current doubt unnecessary and make them all feel as good.
