Oh wow those Dawn Redwoods are magnificent! I just starting growing 3 of them myself, and they’re about a year old now and 2 feet tall already. I’m also growing 3 Giant Sequoias, and 1 Coastal Redwood (planning on getting 2 more) and they’re thriving and doing fantastic in my backyard. When I move to my new house in a few years and take them with me I’m gonna be terrified of deer! 😂

Beautiful trees you selected! Unprotected, if they don't eat them, the deer will scrape all the bark off and snap the trunk at least if they're young. Deer killed one of my bald cypress and my baby dawn redwood. :(

Great video. I'm going to plant 25 Dawn Redwood in Central WI this Spring. What zone (area) are you in? I will have to protect from deer as well.

Thanks. I'm in zone 6 in NJ. This tree is very easy to grow. It just needs some water and space. I think full sun will make it more lush/denser too.

3:58 - I never expected a pine to be eaten by deer

I was surprised too! It turns out deer will eat ANYTHING 1) if deer don't usually have access to a particular plant 2) if deer are hungry enough

My guess is, unfortunately, that these trees have been planted too close together since from what I've seen, the dawn redwood and the cypresses are going to get huge.

Yes, I agree. They also have to compete with faster growing silver maples shading them. Even though they don't get enough sunlight, the bald cypresses and white pine are hanging in there lol. As for the baby dawn redwood, it was scraped to death by bucks rubbing on it. :/
