If you want the damp to go you need to remove the earth against the outside wall, you wont beat damp till that's done I'm afraid, you need at least a 60cm space, the salts are due to the paint you used on the ceiling, it needs to be a lime wash to allow the walls to breath, if anyone has used anything but lime on the walls you will always have issues. 1. Cockroaches don't like Bay leaves, boil some in water and then put that in a spray bottle and spray areas they appear. 2. Boric acid powder is highly effective in cockroach management. It works by sticking to the cockroach's body and while it preens itself it digests the acid, succumbing to its demise. Insecticide versions of boric acid retain the potency as long as the powder remains dry, so there's no need to replacing. 3. While the usual insecticides contain a lot of harsh chemicals, it's worth exploring the natural route when it comes to repellents. Mint, clove, tea tree, and lemon are all known to deter cockroaches, and creating an indoor herb garden is pretty easy. Once your infestation is under control, mix these essential oils with saltwater in a spray bottle and mist previously infested areas daily. If nothing else, your home will smell sensational. Experts at The Home Depot also recommend trying a few other natural repellents: 'Several natural substances have been shown to be effective as roach repellents including osage orange oil, nepetalactone, which is present in catnip, and cineole, a compound found in bay leaves.'

We have terrible fires near Coimbra now, it's possible for me to see them from my balcony. I wanted to do some washing today, but drying it in the air will be problematic because of the smell. How did you manage that with the 10 days of fire you got in Madeira? Remember that I'll come to Funchal (near to the Pingo Doce) for Christmas and New Year's fireworks. This makes me very interested in the place where you prepare your famous poncha. Maybe I'll be lucky to know Phillip, he’s lovely (like his mom 😘)
I sure have bought yourself a project home miss P, Philippe seems perfectly happy with it . I had purchased a project home myself by the ocean also . I spent an entire year working on it without a building permit, local city inspector decided to visit me one day and made me stop the work as he nicely said, all the work I have put into will require permits. Needless to say, I decided to demolish it and had a contractor build me a new home.
Hey Batman, that sounds like an incredibly stressful situation! Were you not able to apply for some kind of retrospective building permit? Either way, I’m glad it all worked out in the end.
@ I didn’t get the permit because that requires a lot of red tape as far as building everything to code and that cost more money. Here in California everything has to be earthquake proof that basically tells me I would have the whole house down anyway.

Good morning, the white residue that's on the ceiling. is salt, The reason for that is here in Maderia. They use a lot of black sand, do not use black sand. I learned it the hard way when I remodeled my home this year, it's taken out straight from the ocean and it's full of salt and because of the humidity it will eventually Leach out. And as far as the humidity coming in on the walls, I have tried many, many expensive products that was suggested by The architects and the locals, don't waste your money they don't really, if you really want it done right either you have to put in a windows or You can also use black tar on the roof and on the walls, but then you have to cover it
That’s the first I’ve heard of the black tar method! After a quick Google, it actually seems pretty straightforward (famous last words). It must have been so frustrating to discover the salt issue during renovations; thanks for the heads-up
Overall is not perfect, but it is a nice house, so be proud of what you done...my house had nothing, I had to start from scratch and living in a building site as property here are so impossible to rent .. few note, its really hard finding contractors here so try to learn as much as you can, the unlevel floor is driving me mad here as well but i managed to reduced lots of it, after a long search i managed to find self levelling compound, its like a cement that once mixed with water will stay level like water. when you paint over a water stain, apply first some stain sealer paint, and then apply the water base, it will stop the stain to come back.
