  • Stealth has pretty much become the name of the game when it comes to 21st century warfare, at least on the side of aircraft. With stealth tanks having shown up from time to time in science fiction, people are starting to wonder if stealth tanks could become a reality soon. This video aims to look at how tanks are detected on the battlefield, how they can solve those problems, and to what capacity vehicles will use stealth technology in the future.

Ah... PL-01 - also known as - Vaporware - vehicle edition.
Fun fact about this - when it was presented a good couple of years ago... I could not shake off the feeling that people presenting it had zero idea what this thing was supposed to be for.
They advertised it as a lightly armoured, close range support tank for use in urban environments, with anti-radar stealth capabilities. Pretty much all statements contradicting one another.
Light armour in urban, close support role - no, just no. When in close support, you want some decent protection.
Urban environment and anti-radar shielding - why? Urban environment basically denies large portion of radar equipment, while close range role means that that visual detection is most likely by far. If this thing was advertised as a recon and mid to long range support vehicle, it would make some sense...

If I was the one designing PL-01 I'd just double down on stealth and make it into an Ambush MBT:
-Big gun for its size, maybe even 130 mm. Probably would have to make it a side-loaded RAVEN cannon just so that it fits in the turret and the recoil isn't obnoxious

About thermal signatures. Having a a physical barrier between the heated parts and the tank do help hugely. This can be done by just covering your tank in branches, preferably pine, or having a dedicated 'coat' for the tank that you can see being tested in several nations already.
I can speak from experience that those can completely mask a tanks thermal image, especially from the front, and help camouflage it even better against the naked eye.

Talking about tracks... I think the aforementioned track technology is around. Band tracks, named because they're effectively large rubber bands, do wonders to reduce the noise given off by tracks. They do have their drawbacks such as difficulty in repairing them as well as lesser durability, but by removing a lot of the moving metal parts (rubber road wheels and pads can help make metal tracks quieter, but there will always be metal-on-metal interface with the drive sprocket and the track pins) it will undoubtedly reduce noise.
In fact, many lighter vehicles such as the M113 and the CV90 have been adapted to use band tracks, are relatively common on various heavy equipment used in construction and farming, and such tracks have been used historically on the US M3 series of half-tracks.
I don't think you can go wrong with using band tracks on a stealth tank, especially when said tank would be a recon vehicle.

We already have Stealth Tanks. Put a tank behind a hill, and you can no longer see it.
The reason why stealth technology is more prevalent in Air and Seagoing vessels is because there is nothing in between you and the enemy. You see them, they see you nothing gets in the way save for the occasional cloud or landmass. The Comanche (aka Stealth Apache) is the prime example as it was canceled, Helicopters rely more on the Terrain for its concealment than any electronic warfare. As for sea there is some stealth technology for surface vessels, but everyone knows the stealth vessel is the submarine.

Currently, my sci-fi series has tanks with electric motors in each of the six tires, and a supercharged six-cylinder generator providing battery power to them, and to the coilgun or railgun turret. (coilgun for command tank, railgun for regular)
An additional benefit to a hybrid electric system would be the simplification of suspension components, with no need to run driveshafts or brake hoses to the track/tyres, and the lack of need for a transmission.

1:50 Going along with this chain:
Cloaking seems out of the question for the time...
Railguns or coilguns as a main weapon might be effective as a main weapon on a stealth tank, if they would produce no smoke, and at the very least, less heat...?
Would a hovercraft be effective against seismic Radar, acoustic sound from the treads, and from kicking up too much dust? Combined with the fact that hovertanks would have to be smaller, they'd be the PERFECT low-ground stealth tank... Right?
So basically, the idea is... Thin Hovertank with a Coilgun as its base weapon; simpler than a railgun tank, still hits fast and hard to get out alive. After all, this tank shouldn't be fighting an abrams intentionally.

    • @Marxman-bi5yu
      @Marxman-bi5yu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would imagine the system needed to lift the tank off the ground would probably kick up a lot of dusk, if not more than a tank due to having to rely on jets and fans depending on how it's handled. That say though if the railgun/coilgun or other gun that's not a traditional tank cannon has a low enough recoil that could actually potentially justify the hovertank despite it's flaws. The main problems I imagine would be A: Heat and B: Dust, so maybe have some sort of skirt bellow the tank that catches dust and blocks some of the heat radiated from the engine from being seen, after that you just have to deal with usual hovertank problems and you got yourself what equates to a Hetzer and a Hellcat having a scifi baby.

Great video Spookston, I believe that a Hybrid Diesel/Electric drive in a vehicle like the CV-90/T-120 shown here is the answer as to lighter tank/scout/recon/IFV/Utility vehicles. The CV-90 series probably encompasses this concept of a single chassis type for all uses better than any other track system currently in use. And the type already has been demoed with "Rubber-Band" type tracks which greatly reduce the audio signature of the vehicle as well as lowers crew fatigue.

Ey I love your videos. I'm very curious about understanding how actually all this technology is shaping modern warfare, because it seems to get so sophisticated that eventually it won't look anything like how it's portrayed on media or videogames, like aerial combats are always beyond visual range and relay on very complex technology. I don't know if you could actually address this topic because almost all wars since WWII have been counterinsurgency, but it would be pretty cool to see how everything you've covered behaves in the real world

When I first saw your videos in my recommended, they were no voice over and just about war thunder, I was a bit annoyed. I think it's a decent game, what I wished world of tanks would've done at some point with the inclusion of modern vehicles. But now that I've found your narrated videos I'm enjoying them very much. You have a lot of knowledge and do your research on subjects. One of the best I've seen was about the gas turbine engine of the Abrams. I was a US Army tanker for 7 years, and if you need some inside opinions or real life experience about what life is like on a tank, or any additional input I think views might enjoy that content. I've noticed that some interview type videos get a bunch of attention from the military vehicle enthusiast community. I'd definitely be up for doing an interview or anything like answering questions. Would love to contribute if you want to produce that sort of content or even be able to use it in videos in the future about tactics or some questions you might have. Either way, love your content bro.

If you're planning on doing more videos on mechs you should check out knightmare frames from Code Geass. Just enough armor that small arms aren't a issue and enough sensors and speed to dodge anything large enough to cause serious damage. Also a nice touch is that the pilots can eject and that ligaments of the mech can be rapidly replaced in the field.

Honestly for stealth vehicles one major thing I do in games like space engineers is not even give the enemy a radar to find me with. Basically, if you can cut all comms & other basic systems, the enemy will have a harder time tracking your radar signature. Can't track what isn't there, after all. In fact if I play multiplayer, I likely combine a lack of radar with a high amount of camouflage to make me essentially invisible on my home terrain, and in space I try to match it up with the skybox, which usually involves a lot of black and dark blues. It's fairly easy to camouflage in Space Engineers, but it's also applicable to some real world ideas.

A hybrid-powered, wheeled IFV sounds like a good idea. Its a start anyway. Especially for IFVs built specifically for scout/recon.
For long distance and highspeed travel, the diesel engine is used. For relatively upclose and short range, the e-motors take over. And the e-motors dont really need to be as powerful as the diesel engine coz despite that silent e-motor, all that speed will make alot of tire noise. So e-motor for stalking speeds.
Im not sure how effective (or how it even works, if it works at all) but the germans were testing demagnetisation tech on their new subs. Degaussing is the term if im not mistaken. They could apply that to tanks.
Road wheels r the best for acoustics without a doubt when compared to tracks, coz even with rubber pads, the clashing of metal between the links and the sprocket is a source of noise as well as heat.
RCS is probably the tougher nut to crack, but it seems someone already tried a crack at it.
Note that something like this, with all the above mentioned mods, will be horrible as an assault vehicle, but excellent for special ops/infiltration missions and these special vehicles can play role as the hidden command centre.
Basically a ninja IFV. A Shadow tank. Ooh.. that sounds nice 😂

Good thing about radar stealth is that the same principles you want in creating good armor coincidentally makes them kinda stealthy if you’re looking at the right direction. Most AFVs already avoid right angles in their design when Leo king at them head on.

The most likely thing to be close to the function of a stealth tank would be an armored car or some other similarly armored wheeled vehicle with missiles or a recoilless system and an autocannon.
Hybrid engine able to cover a reasonable range electrically but is still focused on IC power, wheel flaps all around to avoid kicking up dust as much as possible, radar absorbing paint, shrouded autocannon barrel and receiver.
As much of a low profile as possible while still making it easy to evacuate the vehicle and operate the needed machinery.

the swedish MCS Barracuda thermal/radar camouflage is the epitome of camo nets for tanks. it lower vehicle's thermal signature by insane amounts and can reduce radar signature that are on millimetre waves. you should take a look at SAAB MCS Barracuda. Stealth is already an option for tanks

  • @mrgold3591

For every measure, there will be a countermeasure. You will see detection systems that work on sound, IR, Ultraviolet, visual, radar, chemical detection, vibration, magnetic, etc... Then you you see infantry using some type of "painting" system to mark targets with a transmitter, radioactive element, or something to cover the tank to neutralize the stealth materials. I can see a forward observer calling in artillery with air burst ordnance with a substance to cover and neutralize stealth tech.

Small bit with stealth tanks, folks wanting the sci-fi version like the Nod Stealth Tank would often ignore how much electricity it would both produce and consume to keep the optical/electronic camouflage system operational while moving and then there's the EMP effect as well.

    • @sneedfeedandseed2410
      @sneedfeedandseed2410 ปีที่แล้ว

yeah the Nod stealth tank is by no means a good, reliable vehicle even in lore. the early stealth generators of these things had quite a lot of issues, for example it'd freak out and stop working for a considerable amount of time whenever the vehicle fired, it still does that during tiberium wars/kane's wrath but at least the thing re-cloaks immediately. it also has insanely weak armor so if someone gets a shot in its fucked.

I thik you're right, i mena the stealth will be only on recon light tanks, i belive the same, but i think since almost every modern tank has heat visions, the "heat stealth" could become the part of any future MBT. Since it's a bit less likely to detect it to far range (there won't be a small white point in the gray stuff). And i think camo is still an important thing, and if they will make this, it will be even more, becouse if the heat vision can't spot it on the battlefield, than they have to cover it from human eyes.

I'd try to apply the methods of signature reduction on a vehicle type like the Sd.Kfz.234. It's capable of serving in different roles(20mm cannon, 50mm and 75mm turrets historically), and it has a stable wheel axle system. So design a vehicle of a similar design, then give it an electric engine, an armor covered in an alloy of ceramic-meta material coating. The ceramic should reduce it's thermal signature, and the metamaterials (if you use negative-metamaterials), should minimize it's visible form. It's experimental of course, but it should work.
