Grenoble's tram network serves the city and ten municipalities of its conurbation. Operated by the local public company M TAG, it is the second modern network opened in France, two years after that of Nantes, in 1987. It is best known for being the first network in the world to be accessible to people with reduced mobility since its inception. opening. Le réseau de tramway de Grenoble dessert la ville et dix communes de son agglomération. Exploité par l'entreprise publique locale M TAG, c'est le deuxième réseau moderne ouvert en France, deux ans après celui de Nantes, en 1987. Il est surtout connu pour être le premier réseau au monde accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite depuis sa création. C'est au terme d'un long parcours, marqué par un référendum en 1983, qu'en 1987 la « capitale des Alpes » se dote du premier tramway accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite au monde, si bien qu'en 2017, cinq lignes circulent sur un réseau long de près de 43 km. Un premier tramway circule à Grenoble entre 1894 et 1952 ; d'abord à vapeur, puis électrique à partir de 1897. Outre un réseau urbain dense, il existait plusieurs lignes interurbaines. A partir des années 1930 s'ensuit un déclin qui se termine en 1952 avec la fermeture des dernières lignes. Le réseau moderne a été le premier au monde à utiliser des tramways à plancher surbaissé sur une partie du train (les premiers tramways à plancher surbaissé français sont apparus à Strasbourg en 1994). L'équipement est en effet composé de cinquante-trois rames standards du Tramway Français (TFS) construites par Alsthom et livrées en différentes séries jusqu'en 1996, auxquelles se sont ajoutées, de 2005 à 2009, cinquante rames Citadis 402 entièrement surbaissées.
