  • James tests the decorated sample with generic sound file on a layout commission he has been working on, shunting some 16t mineral wagons around evoking the atmosphere of many colliery sidings in the late 1960s…
    James’s website is at www.jameshilton-cmr.co.uk

Thank you, we’re really excited. The slow speed performance of this sample is superb.

The engine looks fabulous. Lovely slow speeds and the way it moves just seems so right. I quite enjoy the way the sound file works-I love the way the engine’s sounds change as the driver backs off the regulator and the engine coasts into place. That’s beautiful.
That brooding grey sky is cool. Something that looks not so attractive just on its own but right in terms of the aesthetic I relate scenes like this to. It feels as right as it looks. Neat touch, too, to fade those backdrop buildings into the backdrop itself. Too often we present the fully saturated instead of more muted and what you’ve done just looks better. It retains the physicality of that distant structure but fading it into the distance so it’s not competing with “in scene” elements where that two dimensional-three dimensional contrast might be conflicting.
    Beautiful
    Chris

Thanks Chris, there is something about the speed of movement and the sound that gives it greater mass, some momentum almost.
The layout has turned out well, and I’m glad you noticed the back scene sky and faded buildings, I was trying to achieve the feel of a haze in the air. I will write the commission up on the blog at some point.

    What a great model !
Well, except the sound which is more than twice the speed.
Four 'chuffs' per rev. please. 😊
I do like that layout (diorama?).

The sound, as I said Dirk, is just a generic file… even wrong though it adds to the play value massively!
The layout is a commission build I’ve been working on through my other day job, www.jameshilton-cmr.co.uk

Hi, what a great looking loco, shame the sound was so quiet in the video. I keep looking for a small coal mine loco for my layout but can't decide which one to go for. I kind of want to see finished models first in order to decide, but then find they are all sold out! Anyway great video, best regards Dave.

C'mon an engine crew complete with flat caps surely then it would be brilliant!
