1 - Valla / Vallahi: This Arabic loanword literally means “Allah is my witness” or “God is my witness”. Muslims consider this a very serious affirmation and don’t take having God as a witness lightly, that’s why this interviewee was reluctant to say “Vallahi”.

I never understood why, when you're of Turkish origin living in Europe you have to decide whether you feel more connected with one or the other. That's why I hate this question. Honestly, why can't I just feel like both? And bring the best of both worlds to the table. I think we need to understand that in a global world, we shouldn't look at the differences that separate us so much as looking at what differences could unify us and add value to each other's life.

People adapt to where they are living. Turks living in Belgium or living in Netherlands, let's say 3rd generation will, besides obviously looking turkish, also look a little Belgian or Dutch. People do change to where they are living and you can actually see that! It's weird but if you think about it you know it is true.
When you see a program about a boy or girl being reunited with his or her parents(after he or she was adopted by a family in another country) you will notice the person growing up in another country does look like its biological family but will also look like the people living in the country he is adopted in. It's weird like that.
That brings me to the people who were burn in the Netherlands but have a different origin. Naturally I cannot speak for the turkish people, since I am a dutch native, but I believe many Turks do think of the Netherlands as their home, but they do still have familiarity and of course their roots in Turkey. Asking someone which nationality they prefer can be a bit of a difficult question, but I believe many Turks do think of the Netherlands being their home. And that is perfectly fine, as they are Dutch with Turkish roots!
But there are always exceptions. Some people refuse to adapt or see our country as their home, and there might be conflicting thoughts on the matter because this country might be the one they will spend the rest of their lives in.
So like the nice lady mentioned, let's get along with eachother and look forward to a better future together, as the human race.

I watch easy French and Italian lol. ( Although i watch toooo many turkish dizi's with english subs)But, this was a very interesting interview. But, I think the issue is people who are born in a country or moved to a country at a young age generally would feel more attached to that country. If someone moves to a country when they are older then in many ways it's natural to feel like an outsider when moving to a certain country. I mean, if I moved to France tomorrow in my 20s, I can live there for the rest of my life, but i don't think I'd ever feel "French" lol. I may FEEL AT HOME in France. But, in many ways your cultural identity is tied to where you spend your formative years. Of course there are people who let's say are American by nationality- but spent 1-18 years old living in many different countries around the world and never feeling like they felt a part of any 1 culture- that' a whole other story lol. But, yeah it's all interesting.

Originally they were meant to stay a few years to provide for their families back in Turkey, but sooner or later realized that they could build up their lives in these Western countries. Interesting. A difference with Dutch people who emigrate, is that they usually don't feel Dutch anymore after 5 or 10 years but try to assimilate in their new country. They also mostly forget how to speak proper Dutch. Mostly the children will not learn Dutch at all anymore. Maybe a few words. So I learned an interesting cultural difference.

South Africa was looking for influx of Dutch speaking white people in the 1950's and the Dutch government was looking for less people in the country and supported emigration in the 1950's because of the aftermath of WW2 and housing shortage. My parents were one of the many thousands emigrating to South Africa back then, fortunately they returned because my mother could not cope with apartheid. Nowadays I think Canada, Denmark, Germany, Spain and Australia are the most popular emigration countries.
