She turned down Kim Shin. They parted ways. She realized she was lacking before marriage so, she took the time to develop herself so, she didn't become like the future Mi Rae from a different reality who became disillusioned and bitter. That Mi Rae rushed to marry when her own brother was against it that's why they became estranged and never saw each other again afterwards.
Se Joo had the confidence to win Mi Rae that's why he explained how he spent a day trying to win the mini car instead of going to school.
The pictures showed a young man very similar in appearance to Se Joo who dressed the same way wearing the clothes, hairstyle and camera bag as his dad when he was a VJ. Possibly, their son is also going undercover to learn like his dad. Then, by the beach where Se Joo often retreats. That's possibly a family vacation. One of his parents were taking it, probably Se Joo. Finally, photos of baby against the wall with the picture that was in the bedroom when future Mi Rae awakened after being brought to the chairwoman's house.
If you notice, the theme played before Mi Rae swims at midnight leading to My Lady, plays when Se Joo reveals what happened that time when Mi Rae wakes up in bed. He already liked her but, she kept refusing him until she stopped forcing herself to chase Kim Shin. She was badly treated from the very start of their acquaintance that's why the future Mi Rae came to warn her. In truth, many women who marry when the relationship is not on equal footing (that is, the man is ill mannered), end up with broken marriages. If you love someone, you want what is best for them and treat them with respect as an equal partner in life. Just look how Charles treated Diana.
Future Mi Rae's mission did not change her past or present reality in the 2038 future. But, it did change it for the Mi Rae that she met in the past that's why her hand was shaking. She succeeded in the sense that Se Joo and Mi Rae ended up together. It was fate.
The future Kim Shin said his wife was dead and his son hated him. He was not married to the Mi Rae of his reality. That means that there was also a Mi Rae not married to Kim Shin in that universe. The drama was about how this Mi Rae is together with Se Joo because she decided to not, because of the future Mi Rae from another universe. That's why she didn't want to decide in the present on her future decision. Hence, her name and the title of the last episode and her book. Japanese and Korean like to play with words. It's lost to audiences outside of their context so, many didn't like the ending. It was done to give a glimpse of Mi Rae solidifying her choice to become a better partner to match Se Joo. The expectations on women marrying into a chaebol family are high. If she's not ready for it, she will suffer the same fate as future Mi Rae who ended up hating her Kim Shin. 2038 Mi Rae returned because he was still alive and waiting for her, possibly, they both realized their mistakes and wanted to start over again. Her trembling hand can also mean she's touched and happy that it worked out for 2014 Mi Rae because she's clearly happy with her choice.
Se Joo can't always help and comfort her as she acknowledges there's nothing she can give to the relationship. That's why Mi Rae didn't dare ask him to wait for her to grow. What if someone better comes along? True love also waits and is patient. Se Joo already set his mind from the very start. He said to his grandmother that he can't live if it's not Mi Rae. That's why he was willing to let Mi Rae go should she choose Kim Shin and Kim Shin also loves her back. True love doesn't stifle a person but, nurtures and yes, that includes letting go so, the person can grow. If you're meant to be, you'll end up together after being separated for some time. I waited four years to get married while being apart from my fiance then.
The point is, no one can dictate our choice. We can be influenced but, ultimately it's our choice. Future Mi Rae couldn't handle her reality so, she time travels to fix her mistakes. That's why 2014 Mi Rae was in conflict with her. 2014 Mi Rae wanted to stand on her own feet instead of depending on a man. Even Se Joo realized that Mi Rae wants to keep working after marriage. He was very considerate in that regard as some wealthy men prefer to pamper their wives by not having to work for a living. At least, we know our end couple were successful in their career and happy in their marriage. I guess the audience not getting this picture is why some didn't like the ending. They have to piece the puzzle. One of the soundtrack is actually that title so, the show was also playing with the audience to see if they can get it right.
