  • We're celebrating four decades of Genelec with 'The Science of Sound', a series of 16mm films exploring essential production concepts, hosted by Lorenzo Senni, Caterina Barbieri & Not Waving.
Each host premieres brand new material in a format designed to communicate music production tropes through a playful, psychedelic audio-visual language. A blend of surrealist motion graphics, '70s Hollywood aesthetics & an erudite Scandinavian narrator, the series serves as a stylistic flip on the staid world of archetypal production tutorials. A new & compelling guide for budding music-makers.

Please Subtitle, i am Deaf and like the word of music, I hope that with these videos that look so great I can better understand musically the effects of dj, maybe I do not have the ability to hear these effects but by understanding better the theory I could enjoy more of the dj and producers and their time to better perform my work of vj. Thank.

It's not perfect, but maybe it helps^^ and good luck on your search! have a great day!
      [Intro] The Science of Sound
      Module two: Reverb
”Hi i'm Caterina Barbieri and here is some music built on the use of reverb“
      [Infographic]
Reverb replicates the reflection of a sound in a physical space. While synthesizing sound electronically reverb creates a sense of realism by animating and adding texture to a still or lifeless sound.
      [back to Caterina]
Caterina will demonstrate this with a simple A B example.
A: dry without reverb [example plays, image of a rock]
B: wet with reverb [image of a rock with paint on it or something; example plays (which sounds much cooler and fuller, you can hear the scale of the room and are unconsciously reminded of the infographic from before with the soundwaves bouncing around]
So as reverb creates a sense of physical space the producer can manipulate our perception of its dimensions by changing the speed of the reflections, an effect traditional notation just can't capture.
Here is another A B example:
A: dry [image of a music stand, example plays]
B: wet [image of a music stand with paint being thrown at, example plays]
Caterina has composed for us a piece that demonstrates reverb in action.
[Big example with all sorts of images playing till ~2:45]
      [Back to normal]
      Hrmmm interesting. Let's recap:
dry without reverb: [same image and sound as in the very first example]
wet with reverb: [same images and sound as in the first wet example]
      [Outro]
Thank you for joining us on the science of sound.
