    From 6:00 when Lee says: "We're not rating how incredible the weather happened to be that day, we're not rating how interesting the clouds were that day, we're rating it as a photograph and I can say that anything is interesting about this blabla..."
    Dude, that's what creates the photograph. The light, the mood, composition. And you also need to watch the weather and light and be there in the right place in the right time. That's what photography is about. Elia, on the other hand hits every main point and sees what this image is about.
    I really like it to, it's amazing IMHO.

      I agree, that's what photography is about, but I also think that he does bring up a lot of good points of composition.

      It’s all about (i) the subject and (ii) the location - and in this case, the subject is the lightning, and the location is where the lightning strikes ... the beach and the buildings imho are just innocent bystanders next to the star of the photo - i would have given it a 5! But ... fun to listen to how the pros rate photos - I certainly wont be sending in any of my photos anytime soon! 😀

    • @michaelmano7261
      @michaelmano7261 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its more so I think it was not planned at all.
      If he was chasing the weather he would have set up a better composition.
      But like Elia said, he did the best with what he had.

    Elia Locardi was excellent in this video. I loved Elia's light, articulate, and helpful critiques, compared to Lee's mostly awkward, often negative (dare I say bordering on arrogant) commentary. I also appreciated what Elia said about photographing the weather in the storm photograph 6:00; the clouds in that photograph *were* stunning. Many scholars assert that one of Ansel Adams' (arguably one of the best landscape photographers--ever) greatest gifts was photographing the weather, something that Lee completely discounted as unimportant in that photograph. Now, I'm not saying that storm image is an "Ansel Adams shot", but it certainly deserved a 'tip-of-the-hat' to those gorgeous clouds, which is exactly what Elia did. After watching several of these critique videos one can definitely tell which critics have more experience in the different photography genres.

      Dude, it is obvious that everything here is staged. Do you really think that it will be interesting when 2 guys agree on anything and complement each other? The Bad guy The good guy and The Noob on the other side of the screen. Classic!

    I really like critiques like these. They help me to judge my own photos. They let me know what I'm doing wrong in my photos and what I can do about it, because a lot of things that you point out are some good points to be noted for us amateurs.

    It's relatively easy to make a great photo in one of the great locations around the world. It's far harder to make a great photo in your back yard or around the area you live. It's definitely possible though! Many of us who do this as a serious hobby really don't have the luxury of being in one of those places that are almost automatic great photos. We must work with what we have.

    Photo at 25:35 was taken in my town, Nazare, Portugal. It was a lighthouse, the sea broken the pear and all of that went to the bottom of the ocean.
    I interested who took the photo, is possible to get that information?

    1) with that popularity and tutorials from all over the world, I thought the host would be able to afford some shoes;
    2) @25:13 the strange pose is because it's a reference to "Wanderer" by Caspar David Friedrich;

    I am easily distracted by legs and feet in a lot of these videos. And from reading others' comments, I am not the only one. It would be so nice to see a better angle on the video camera so that focusing on the content is not a problem. On the more positive side, Elia Locardi is fair, fantastic & very thoughtful in his critiques & I found that very refreshing in this series of videos. Kudos.

  • @andrewenglishsc

    I've been casually watching this series of critiques and I'm disappointed. I feel Elia does a fantastic job of critiquing photos and offers insights beyond face value. He's much more humble in his critique (although perhaps harsh) and understands the challenges behind the scenes of every photograph. I'm always amazed with Elia's photography and I think his humility serves him well. Lee, however, comes across as arrogant. It seems he makes his mind up instantly about each picture instead of inspecting/investigating, looking for motif, and understanding the scene. I looked up Lee's portfolio (fix your website dude) and wasn't impressed at all. If he would have rated his own portfolio with the arrogance and bias that he's held in these videos, he'd end up with all 2's and 3's! The critique at 6:00 blew my mind. It's not a perfect picture, but do you understand how difficult that shot is? Regardless, he managed to capture an amazing scene with great composition and it got a 2? Yikes. Props to that photographer!

    • @Borsting89
      @Borsting89 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. I feel like Elia is using his expecrience (which he has a lot of) and passes this on as critique where as Lee is far more random in his statements.

    I disagree on the lightning photo that location matters. I've seen so many awesome weather photos where if you take out the weather it's just a field with a fence. Weather photos are about the weather.

    Elia seems much more benevolent than Lee. Looks like he, as the much better landscape photographer, has more of a clue of how difficult some of these images were to take, while Lee is just slamming tons of them (like the amazing landscape shot) even though he would've probably failed miserably at most of these shots. He seems way too harsh.

  • @shaunbay2

    I think at this point, they should just give a fail, pass and A++ as the ratings because 1 and 5 is hardly ever used, and 4 is only seldom used. So might as well combine ratings 4 and 5, and 1 and 2 as a fail.

  • @DrLeute
    @DrLeute 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I think another grading score would be helpful form a statistical point of view. Since 1 and 5 barely even exist there are only three gradings left (2,3 and 4). If one of the two of you picks the grading 3 you're only of by 1 all the time. Maybe a score of 1 to 7 or even 1 to 10 would be more useful in stimulating interesting discussions.
    Best Regards,
    Matt

      Boog Ste Lici Show me a picture that looks good with no editing.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      oBLACKIECHANoo Oh there are many photos that looks good without any editing, even without RAW -> JPEG conversion because it was done in the camera.
      If we go rate things just by how it was edited, then it is slippery slope as it is about artistic vision based emotional state of the editor on that moment when seeing that photo.
      We can give critique basically in three levels: 1) Location, timing, camera angle. 2) Field of view, Shutter Speed, Depth of Field, White Balance, 3) Post-Process.
      If the location is great, you can always go there again in different times to see it differently. If your timing was not great, come back on next time or wait to get a better time. What you can not always affect is the camera angle as you can not hang in the air or always submerge your camera to water etc, but being at the location and just searching good camera angle can totally change the photograph. Anyone can do these things correctly but it is rarely done because schedule, timing or physical obstacles etc.Some can be overcome but not all.
      Then comes the photographer choice to choose focal length, what does she/he leave outside of the frame or what is getting picked up. Does long or short shutter speed bring the mood to the photo or not? Is the background disturbing or is the subject so attractive that it needs to "pop-out", by no way to control background by choosing camera angle? So nice sunset with nice set of clouds etc but there is no colors? Well let's play with white balance or color profile to add colors that are so faint in the scenery or doesn't exist even!
      Lastly the post-process session, that is where the photograph is finally made. Changing field of view by cropping if it wasn't liking in the first place, changing white balance if it wasn't at all what was wanted, removing some birds or people in the frame? Yes, we can go easily from correcting photo to editing image and from there to manipulating the image to be something totally different.
      A good photo looks good without editing, straight out of the camera JPEG. A bad photo can look nice after image manipulation, and good photo can be turned something "Wow" with editing but easily it is overdone and turns to be negative after a time passes.

    • @heihei1262
      @heihei1262 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +paristo of course there's absolutely stunning photos that isn't even touched by photoshop. However it is an important tool, in order to create the right mood. Remember that in raw you have more room for artistic creativity, than in JPEG. I am aware of the different settings, and tweaks you can do in JPEG settings, but you have more possibilities with a raw file, in post processing.
      Saying that shooting in JPEG is more impressive is none sense. A well processed and taken photo is more artistic in my opinion.
      Check out Elia's photos for example. His photos has a atmosphere which is stunning an very impressive. Without editing, it would be impossible to merge those photos (each taken at different times, and lighting conditions) together.

    • @oBCHANo

    "We are not rating how incredible the weather happened to be that day"...The landscape photograph before this one he gave a score of 2 because the scene (which is the subject of the pic) was not that spectacular" in his opinion. Why would you rate a photo completely based on the subject and then say you aren't the next photo. The landscape is the subject in the same way the storm is subject of the weather photo. His grading is inconsistent. Elia is grading on not only subject, but how well and how creatively the subject was captured.

    Sorry Lee but looks a little awkward to me the low point of view of the camera that took the video showing your legs in the foreground, that pose its a little offensive coming from a man to a male audience in the must of the cases, and why you question the 4 points that Elia gave to the lighting pics and be offended by that , you can forget the subjective aspect of the art, and the pics of the grand canyon may be looks like a solid image and technical perfect but doesn't tell me nothing , did not move me in a emotional way. Why you gave so much importance to be agree in your perception of the pics with your guest, its better have different tastes and opinions like have different styles .Sorry English my second bad language. Photo 1. Should be cropped so the two points of interest look like living creatures. Then you have movement and interest.
    Photo 2. Whoa.. so boring and unbalanced, a gorgeous place you never want to visit? Walk around, line up those rocks on the water, wait for dusk, mist, sun, LIGHT!!!! a fish a moose a bear.. anything, but WAIT, patience is the love of the lens.
    Photo 3. Crop, crop and more crop.. you could get 4 really great separate pics out of one.
    Photo 4. Love it, makes me feel like I'm there. A bit of things here and there, but it makes it real, it rocks, lol.
    Photo 5. Not bad, but it's soooo overdone...
    Photo 6. The reeds where the light is the lighest, that small area is nice, the rest is like Kaopectate and just annoying.
    Photo 7. The sun, light source, is a shadow on the barn yet casting a shadow, however, though it looks like Microsoft screen wall paper, it is whimsically interesting. It's oddness makes it so.
    Photo 8. Wow, would love to be there, can feel the cool air, the mystery and excitement of the night, I think I can smell wine too.
    Photo 9. Milky way and blue algae, would have been great if it was more crisp.
    Photo 10. Ooo.. ok .. lets call it a walk with the queen.. I just see her there with her hat and dogs. But sliding downhill as the horizon line is on a slant.
    Photo 11. Lovely balance, lovely crop, lovely cat like silhouette in the center. However I see a tiny Hiroshima in the center back ground, then that's all I see.
    Photo 12. Wow, that egg plant colour is so awesome. The little person. maybe a sword or heavenly stance.. edit. the picture has what I'd call excellent engineered architecture.
    Photo 13. Next.... whatever, not going to try to figure it out.
    Photo 14. Perfect example of where symmetry can go awry.

      Photo 7: yes the shade and shadow are contradicting, don’t know how they missed that. IMHO worse than a snapshot!

    Props to Elia. You are an amazing photographer. Lee is good but a little arrogant. Show a little more humility man.
