    The clicking in the blurred parts to exit edit mode is most likely to mimic what people expect out of a modal dialog say a website pops up for settings or something. It dims the background and you're supposed to be able to click out of the modal to dismiss it, so having that here as well makes sense, I can see a lot of people defaulting to that

    Plasma fixes bugs pretty quickly and devs are responsive to complaints. It's completely opposite to Gnome, where they ignore you and if they respond, they tell you, it's all good, even if it's not. It's like talking with idiots. That is one of many reasons why I left Gnome and never looked back. Plasma is addictive ;).
    I love the shake cursor feature! I had to many times "loosing" the cursor and was wildly shaking it, in hope I will notice it somewhere. Now it's easier. Blurry part will be fixed, so no problem.

    the edge barrier feels momentum-based to me. if I move the cursor quickly between screens it's like it's not even there, but if I move the mouse very delicately then it takes a long time to overcome that barrier. maybe there's a "hidden" speed threshold above which the additional distance you set is ignored, and only when you move your mouse slow enough the distance calculation takes effect
    I still experience kwin freezing for 1-2ms when opening overview mode via the Meta key as shortcut (modifier-only shortcut), and I have my kwin cache in a tmpfs

      KDE has a great bug tracker! I searched for my bug for a few minutes and found a few others that had my issue. I don't know if it was just luck, but they claimed to have fixed the issue in only a few days! (now I just have to wait until it hits my distro repos).
      I think the edge barrier isn't customizable enough, nor is it something that I would want to be on by default.
      In my opinion the velocity threshold to skip it needs to be configurable as well as the distance.

      As far as i understand its a monitor config issue where the minimum and maximum framerates are farther apart than expected so when it rapidly changes back and forth the brightness changes cause a flicker. This can be fixed by changing your monitors edid file to bring the minimum and maximum refresh rates closer together. I personally dont know how to do this but if someone figures it out please do share :)

Plasma 6.1 is the first release that works with comparable performance to Gnome and without major crashes when running the Nouveau driver on RTX 2000+ series cards. Between the GSP driver updates from kernel 6.7+ and this update to Plasma, Nvidia cards using Nouveau are becoming much more viable as a daily driver.

  • @joseoncrack
    @joseoncrack 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's great. I've been using Plasma for a year now as my daily driver. 6.1 has a few nice improvements. The thing that sounded good but is actually very annoying, in a dual-monitor setup, is the cursor sticking to the screen border (common side between monitors) unless you move the cursor very fast. It sounded nice to be able to click on items that are close to the border more easily, but in practice, it gets very annoying when you move your cursors very often between monitors.
    The cursor hide on typing is great, and frankly. That's something that Windows have had for over 2 decades. It was about time.
    Regarding the cursor shake thing, it's nice when you have hi-dpi displays (you can sometimes lose track of it indeed!). Unfortunately, it's too sensitive IMO and I often get the enlarged cursor even when I don't intend to shake it, just by moving the cursor normally (it's probably worse when you use a high DPI setting for your mouse). The fact that the cursor is just a bitmap and looks not so good when magnified is not that bad - unless you use a cursor size that is already big relative to the resolution of your display, the aliasing is not that noticeable, and using this feature for lower resolution makes no sense.
    All in all, Plasma is the DE that has the most features of anything in existence, including Windows and macOS. The parts that would require more work are the "KDE applications", which are not all great. I use Okular as my main PDF reader, and it's good enough, but it still have annoyances, such as a very high RAM consumption (never seen a PDF reader that was so memory hungry, and I'm talking about the "normal" memory setting). It also still doesn't have more than 10 entries and in recent files, it's not configurable, and it still doesn't have any session (saving the list of currently open files and being able to restore it).

    Funnily enough, adaptive sync is working fine for me (6800 XT, AOC Q24G2, Kernel 6.9.6, Plasma 6.1.0). When brightness flickering happens, the issue is either the kernel mode GPU driver or a faulty VRR implementation in the monitor (was quite common with earlier ones). What can also cause problems, is using mangohud and forcing on adaptive sync there while kwin or gamescope also enable it this can cause all sorts of madness, including flickering, laggy mouse cursor and horrid framepacing.

  • @Viirax

    11:10 honestly, I still want the old style power interface back. I'm so used to a single power button on my panel just opening old interface and then choosing either shutdown or reboot from there depending on what I want to do. It just looks better to have a single button on my panel, so at least having the option to use the old interface would be nice.
    On to a bug, I've noticed that if you use the Super key to open the app menu (start menu) then you can hold Super and press Ctrl to toggle open and close the menu. This is extremely annoying if you have any shortcuts that rely on both Super and Ctrl as you have to make sure to hit Ctrl first; in my case I use Super+Ctrl+"Arrow Key" to move windows to another screen, and I just end up moving the app menu to another screen if I hit Super before Ctrl.
    It also doesn't seem like old bug with Plasma Search where plugins aren't saved correctly and are reset on reboot is fixed yet. Personally it just feels like unnecessary clutter when I just want to search for my installed apps and it also shows system settings and stuff, so while not a massive thing I still find it annoying.

    The setting at 15:24 seems to be working as intended but the name is far from clear. From what i've observed, it seems to refer to the cursor speed (in pixels traveled) needed for it to change between displays. If you set this to a low value, less cursor movement is required to change screens when reaching the border. If you set a high value, more movement is needed.
    If you set this value to... idk... 900px, and you move your mouse so slow that the cursor never jumps that amount of pixels on the screen, you will never change displays.
    But yeah, "Edge barrier" doesn't get that across imo.

  • @CorneliusCornbread
    @CorneliusCornbread 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The freesync flicker bug is actually a hardware bug, some implementations of freesync are kinda crappy and when they're at the lower end of their freesync refresh range (the range that freesync can actually make the given frames smooth) will begin to flicker. I had a monitor that would do this on Windows in Unity's editor, insanely annoying, and it wasn't just me, there were many other's who's freesync displays would flicker too.
    My new monitors have never had this issue in Windows or Linux, there's likely a software workaround where you can disable freesync _before_ you get to the lower end of the freesync refresh range that would solve this.
