    I’m watching this 3 years later, in Feb 2024. I got this machine when it first came out and used it but not cover stitch much at all, then moved overseas for 6 years and moved back a year and a half ago. I’ve used the Ovation serging but now want to use the cover stitch. YOUR video is the clearest, best-filmed explanation of how to set up, especially the back guides part. I’m subscribing and saving this video. Thank you!

    Thanks so much for your excellent video. I just bought an Evolution and spent an hour trying to thread for a cover stitch. I looked up every video I could find for my machine and they all were terrible-no clear explanations and lousy camera work. Then I remembered how well you explain details and decided to check out this video. So glad I did. Your clear instructions regarding threading through the back guides allowed me to thread my machine in less than 5 minutes. I am a fan and will be buying your serger lessons. For anyone out there who might have the Evolution the threading paths are exactly the same as the Ovation. Use Jennifer’s videos and skip buying the ones from Babylock.

    it's been a LONG time since I've done any sewing. my ovation hasn't been used by me or anyone in almost 18 months. my grandson wanted me to hem a shirt for him. it's super stretchy polyester and very thin fabric. I'm hoping I can figure out tensions to be able to do a coverstitch. I could barely remember how to use my Aventura. I needed to patch an undarm seam on the hubby's carhart jacket. I did manage to get that done. I'm dreading trying this, but at least you are very thorough in explaining how to do it and hopefully at my old age - I can do it. thank you for being so detailed. I also had issues with that back plate and where the threads go thru, but thank you for doing a close-up. that helps a ton! I think my machine is still setup for a coverstitch. I just have to change colors. it really needs to get used at some point. 2023 was a BAD year. my son lost his battle with cancer and I totally lost interest in everything............. maybe this will be therapeutic.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So sorry to hear, sending hugs. If the hem is very thin, I think I would use a double sided fusible tape to stabilize the hem before attempting to sew it up on the serger. If you can find some thin knit scraps to practice on before you tackle the shirt, you can play with the tension settings, Hoping 2024 is better for you!!

    I appreciate your Ovation teaching demos. I have wondered about the necessity of buying a knit material binding applicator. I own the woven binding applicator. If you can advise by demonstrating the applicator for a knit material using a woven applicator, it might be informative. I know you are more familliar with your machine than the local dealer and I live quite far from alternative dealers. Thanks for your help. I have been less fearful figuring out the sewing techniques of a serger because of your demos.

    For my benefit, glad you saw a concern and showed close up of the needle thread pathway. I seem to second guess myself. Believe it or not, I am not sure thread should go thru the open bar above the needle eye. The thread kept popping out. My SERGING results were not good. Perhaps a needle tension problem? I need to rewatch your wonderful videos on the Ovation manual and refresh my aging memory.

    Your videos are the best, thank you, I have spent a whole day on the ovation - on coverstitch trying to get the stitch good with wooly nylon in the looper, i tried every setting and change possible but still got uneven stitch - this morning i put ordiary thread in the looper and the stitches are perfect, does the ovation just not like wooly nylon.

    I think you're a lifesaver. I got the new Ovation and could not figure out how to thread the coverstitch needle section. all the other videos show a different configuration........correct me if I'm wrong (I haven't tried this yet - ) but that little bar under the guides has a spring to it, so you need to depress that in order to get it to click in? The manual was no help. they show the front threading part but not the back...........I had the same issues when I had my Evolve. the manual didn't really show the thread guides in the back. In the event I'm wrong and it doesn't work, I'm going to wait until tomorrow to give this a try.......
    Thank you for your extremely clear videos......................

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, It's not a spring. If you look at the metal guide from the side, it's kind of like a hair pin. The front and back of the guide are pressed together to create a tight space to secure the thread. You physically have to hold the thread taut below and above the guide and press it into the tight space at the base of the guide. I found that this space was too tight on my Ovation and instead of being able to click the thread into the guide, it was breaking the thread. To fix it, I had to unbend the guide a little bit to make the space less tight... I'm thinking a little video on this topic may be helpful :) Stay Tuned!

    • @ssarge2
      @ssarge2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you. I tried for almost 30 minutes to get it thru that guide with no luck, then came upstairs - rewatched your video and now plan to try again........who knew that threading the Ovation would be most difficult just getting it thru a guide......LOL

    • @ssarge2
      @ssarge2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tweaked the guide bar at the back and that solved the problem........WHEW! who knew? thank you again. so glad you made these videos. I would never had guessed to bend that little guide. probably would have resulted in a call to the dealer.

      Hi Janet, I have stitching the cover hem on my to do list. If you're interested in an in depth class using the cover hem, check my new class on pattern review... sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/class.pl?id=160 The cool thing about this "A La Carte" class is that you can purchase the techniques you're interested in... or the whole class :)

  • @ssarge2
    @ssarge2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    is the procedure the same for the Evolve? I also had an issue with the Evolve and the things in the back. Hard to figure out how to get them in the correct one. when you bring both threads thru and don't put them thru the needles, how do you know which is which? right needle vs left needle thread?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not worked with the Evolve, so I'm not sure about the exact procedure... but my guess is that it's very similar. When you thread the needles, up to, but not through the needles themselves, try putting the left needle thread tail over on the left side of the machine and right needle thread on the right side.... letting it hang down in the open sewing table. When you're ready to thread the needles, you'll be able to tell which is left and which is right. Another solution would be to thread the chain looper first and after everything else is set up, then thread the needles start to finish ... one at a time. Hope that helps.

  • @Nannajb1
    @Nannajb1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I seem to have a problem threading them through the back guide.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Judy, When I first started working with my Ovation, I did too! I was so stumped as to why I couldn't get the thread to click into the guide that I got a screw driver and took the thread guide off the machine. By taking it off the machine, I could see that the way it worked to keep the thread in line. Basically it's a folded piece of metal that overlaps at the bottom to form a tight space for the thread to clip into. (Picture a bobby pin). The base of my guide was folded too snug. To fix it, I gently pulled the two overlapping ends of the metal guide away from each other to widen the base slightly. If you cannot click the thread into the base of your guide, try to gently pull the side of the metal clip that's facing you way from the back of the machine slightly. Please let me know if this helps! Thanks for watching :)
