Back when nothing was disposable. What a triumph! Thank you for sharing this!
Yes. Can you just imagine how many modern disposable razors get discarded everyday worldwide?
Nonsense though. The razor blades shown here are meant to be disposed and replaced. In fact these Gillette blades and razors are often shown as the archetype and the very beginning of the business model of convincing consumers to keep buying replacement parts, the 'Razor and blades model', a model that, to this day, is responsible for short product lifespans and unnecessary waste the whole world over.
The fact that Siemens made a little doohickey to re-sharpen them a few times doesn't change the fact that these are disposable blades, not meant to last longer than a few months, at best.
There are no "non disposable" things. Stuff simply degrades.
Sure, you can fix, mend and repair them a few times (which is often a few times more than modern stuff) but you aren’t restoring them.
@@PH4RX I started using an old shaving knife and razor a couple of years ago. Works totally fine as long as you keep things sharp. Haven't bought anything in regards to shaving, except foam since then.
It just works and works. Then you sharpen things and continue.
@@secularnevrosis They do but the process of sharpening takes away material.
So eventually you have to replace it. It's just the nature of things.
until now i didnt knew that such a thing like a Razor Blade Sharpener even exists 😁
Me neither !!! 😅
And it's so simple and ingenious!
Me too 😂
Mind blown
@TheFabrik
Curious on how you figured it out?
Can't imagine typing in small blue box with pull string worked 😅.
I'm nearly 60 this year, digital is truly amazing but analogue will ever be the mother of invention for me and the sheer beauty of function.
I can’t agree more 😉
Interaction between nature and biological creatures is always analogue, a transducer is required to convert the analogue signal to digital and vice verse if the software needs to convey the signal or result to nature or a biological creature. Sensors/transducers are used extensively in the mechanical world to convert the analogue mechanical signals into digital signals for software use.
highly valuable tool for the discerning gentlemen looking to maintain his sleek appearance in a post-apocalyptic world where razor blades would be scarce
Or for ww2 as it was also known
You could also use a fixed blade razor, not that hard to sharpen
Why would a discerning gentleman use disposable razors?
You know humans have been shaving for literally thousands of years before someone invented disposable razors right?
Straight razors were used by the upper class. Because back then labor was cheap and it was easy to hire an entire house full of servants.
You can even shave with a knife if you know how to sharpen it.
I too enjoy my nuka cola best while looking the part!
Razor blades are already scarce. Try finding some US made razor blades or any at all.
I'm not sure what's more amazing: the restoration of the device or the device itself. Either way, thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Thank you ! Glad to share it with you 🙌
Does anyone else find this relaxing and satisfying? I appreciate this creator.
I do !! 😉 Thank you very much ;)
Oh, so THAT’S how it works… 🤔

Thanks a lot Pavel 😌🙏
Když jsem byl malý, tak jsme ho měli doma ale postupem času nevím jestli bych ho našel. Ten náš měl obal z bakelitu.
This is from those times when blades were not thrown away, but sharpened. Things were not thrown away, bought and immediately thrown away again, but repaired, remade and used again.
the times that hard working White people created
No it isn't. Of all the things you could have possibly picked, you couldn't have found a more wrong example than this. These are disposable razor blades. They're meant to be used and thrown away. They replaced straight razors, which were meant to be sharpened and used over and over again. You know how printers are cheap and ink is expensive? That's called the razor blade model. No prizes for guessing why. These safety razor blades were one of the earliest products in the "use it once and throw it away" trend that we're living in today. This is where it all started, and it was *wildly* successful.
@@sac3528 successful or not, it shouldn't have gone in that direction
@@sac3528 Sorry, but you may not have watched the video carefully. The item shown there is not a cassette for storing blades. This is a machine for sharpening these very blades. And it was clearly made before the adoption of the theory of stimulating demand due to the transition to the production of one-time things. And if you think that this theory is optimal marketing, then I must upset you. It's more of a crazy living of resources. Crazy and meaningless. Although it gives a momentary increase in profits.
@@СергейМельников-ц3е na dude, these "sharpeners" were a curiosity even back when they were made
Glad to hear !! I think I will keep that one too ;)
Делали на века. А сейчас ширпотреб. Блин. Где-то мы что-то упустили. Верните мне детство.
Loving restoration, a true artist! I am sure that the device is now in far better condition than it was out from the factory. Luxurious finishes, is a little gem now.
Thank you very much 🙏
Excellent video! What clever ants we were way back pre-digital!

It's amazing how many different designs of razor blade sharpeners existed
Your skill and care makes this old engineer smile and nod in appreciation and approval.
Thank you so much 😌👍
What fun, the restoration of another interesting object.

Wow, what a restoration, amazing, hat's off, what a patient's,so many equipment, so many chemicals, amazing process. And,a beautiful demonstration after assembling the razor sharping unit.
Thank you very much ! Glad you appreciated it 🙌
Enjoying a blast from the past. My granddad had one of those. 👌👌
What a perfect restoration of a vintage blade sharpener! Thanks for sharing!
Nice work and beautiful
That is a pretty ingenious little device 😄👍
pretty dang cool. great job
That is really neat
I watched my grandfather use the inside of a drinking glass to sharpen his razor blade before lathering up with old spice out of a mug.
I have his soap and lathering brush... its worth nothing to anyone else , but when i hold it , i have that picture of me and my grandfather when i was a child in my head... good memories... thanks for the memory
Thanks a lot 🙏 So touching to bring the memories back 😌🙌
Remember my grandfather sharpening his razors on sheets of newspapers ...I think the paper was a bit rougher back then...he'd swipe the razor across the paper till the print became blurred ha ha.

Thats cool... good to know another method...
Thanx
Never heard of that... butt , we used to crumple the newspaper up and use it for no#2 when camping.... i'm sure glad our newspapers weren't that rough.

Mind blowing... never imagined such a device existed. Awesome work.
that last tomato slice was so satisfying!
Doing this keeps the mind and the blades sharp !!!
For sure 😌

Beautifully restored!
What a nifty device!
Saving shoe laces for the win!!! And amazing little device
Thank you !! 🙏
Nice job, and it’s more effective than a pyramid…
In the late 1960s my brother built a cardboard pyramid, because materials are not supposed to matter, and tried sharpening a razor blade with it. It did not work.
😂
I shouldnt have laughed as hard as i did at this. Thank you i needed that
What a genius little machine 😍! And beautifully restored - as always 👍💪👏👏👏👏😅!
Bravoooo maestro odlično uradjen posao najbolji si.Veliki pozdrav od Mileta iz Bosne.
🟦…Concise restoration,
...Well DONE!
Take it from a man who, while on Active Duty had a five o'clock shadow by two o'clock. The finest blades come from Germany and Japan. Period. I sure could've used this sharpener while out to sea for seven months at a time. Cool video.
Sharpening (i.e. removing significant material) razor blades like these is a complete waste of time since their effectiveness is dependent on the exact distance they protrude from the razors guides. So when you sharpen you end up reducing the closeness of the shave that any particular razor is able to achieve.
Just seen one of these blade sharpeners at a flea market yesterday, the owner was very happy to explain to me what it is used for. And today youtube just decides to pop this video in my feed. What a funny coincidence. 😅
Phones listen to the things you're saying when you're nearby to it, or it's in your pocket. Then it shows you ads or recommends you videos based on the words it heard you saying, and because your TH-cam account is the same one on your phone and your computer, so it's linked together, you can be recommend things on your computer based on what your phone heard you talking about. So it isn't a coincidence that you got recommended this video. If you don't like your phone spying on you, the only solution is to not have a phone.
Very good❤
This is a beautiful piece of equipment. Nice job
Restaurado afiador de lâmina de barbear 🔪😉
Such a cool little device, and a great job restoring it
Another great restoration :) But at 10:48 min it looks like the elevation from the grindstone is towards the center. After the restoration away from the center.
I received a similar model new from my father. It's been packed away in the cupboard for years.
Eagle eye. ^^
At 0:45 you can see it clearly: The upper two stones are facing outwards, the bottom two inwards. I guess, the sharpening angle is to steep, when the upper stones are facing inwards too.
I guess the previous owner was unable to set the grindstones up
So, many tools for restoration amazing.People, like you keep antique peaces alive, to see for next generation.Great keep it up.
The loop was so you could hang it off of the side of your bathroom mirror/medicine cabinet or somewhere similar. You would put the blade in, leave it hooked up, grab the other end of the cord, and just move it back and forth along the cord that you and the medicine cabinet were now holding steady.
Bonus knowledge, if you have ever noticed a small slit/slot on the back of medicine cabinets, this was for you to slide your old, used, rusty razors through. They would then fall between the layers of the bathroom wall and the room next to it. We found more than a few walls filled with rusty razor blades when doing remodels.
Just like under some fire places is a grate that opens up, like in my grandparents house. This dumps into an ash holding room, some often had no access, just like the wall where people dumped their used up razor blades.
Yes, and the hook was probably doriginally designed for the predecessor of this sharpener. The leader strap that was used to sharpen razor knives.
@@petternorman6192 Aha! I think you've cracked the line of thinking for the inventor of this contraption, it's a mechanical strop for those who grew up in the days before throwaway safety razor blades, and were used to stroppping blades for continued use!
@@petternorman6192 I would bet you are correct
@@wyw876 the way i think it was used was the loop was on a hook you held the other end then slide the box back and forth like stropping as opposed of pulling the string back and forth..
@@MickeyMousePark That makes more sense
A mes yeux je trouves ce travail de restauration et le résultat incroyable. Certes il faut les outils la patience mais aussi comprendre comment démonter correctement et..remonter correctement. Vraiment bravo monsieur 😊
Merci beaucoup 👍

all the ingenuity, invention, blood sweat and tears that went into a problem that no longer exists, sharpening blades, that is :)
what a brilliant invention. it's a shame we live in a throwaway society now 🙇♂️
The blades are also made to throw away back then. Double edge blades are one of the earliest examples of convenience over lastability.
And while it seems like a good idea, these blades will start rusting far before a third sharpening.
steel doesnt get thrown away thou
its the most recycled material we use
Quel beau résultat pour cet objet qui a dû bien servir à l'époque ! Bravo ! C'est toujours le même plaisir de découvrir vos videos
Merci beaucoup ! Un objet rare qui se perd peu à peu… 😘
My grandfather has one of that!!!!!
I had no idea such a thing even existed. Thanks for showing us that. Also, this was a very relaxing and satisfying video; very ASMR.
Thank you very much 🙏 Glad you appreciated it 🙌
Man they definitely dont want you doing that today ! Fixing things and not buying things!
Or sharpening razor blades!
Sad isn't
For the price of one of these you could buy years worth of razor blades. It’s just simply not worth it anymore with how cheap you can get excellent quality blades.
Sharpening (i.e. removing significant material) razor blades like these is a complete waste of time since their effectiveness is dependent on the exact distance they protrude from the razors guides. So when you sharpen you end up reducing the closeness of the shave that any particular razor is able to achieve.
Wow I really enjoyed this video. I have never seen a contraption like that. Such a clever design, and you did an amazing job with the refurbishment. 👏
Thank you so much, a pleasure to share 😌🙌
Super 👍
This piece is unbelievable, first time seeing something like this
Nice! 😊
I love that moment when the powder coating melts to shiny paint ✌🏻🎨☕️
Me too ! 😁
Algo q notó en este afilador de hojas de afeitar es q está construido en su totalidad de piezas metálicas se nota la calidad de antes 👍
Ano dříve se vyrábělo aby to sloužilo co nejdéle. Dnes aby to vydrželo minimálně po dobu záruky. A teď se lidé diví kolik máme odpadu.
The stones are assembled reversed of what they were before disassembly. Nice work. Looks good. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
Thank you !! The previous owner must have disassembled it then he missed the point :) it was impossible to adjust the blade. I just put everything back in place ;)
Very efficient and effective tool
My father had exactly the same model ❤ Thx mate for bringing back some memories 😊
My pleasure 🙌 Glad to bring the memories back 😌🙏

*Well, I have learned something today, by watching this video. 🙂 I never knew that there was a Razor blade sharpener, as I always thought, that once the blade was dull or didn't do it's job of shaving of the hair on a face. That the blade was always thrown away into the rubbish bin. So Thank you so much for this wonderful video🙂.*
Amazing metamorphosis!
Excellent restoration 👍.. cool gadget.

I have one that I bought in the 1980s that sharpens modern razors. It’s basically a small, glass plate in an enclosure, and works well.
