vv.1-22 (Israelites oppressed)
Jacob's family is named and number of those who went to Egypt because of the famine.
The Pharoah did not know of Joseph's help and decided to make the Israelites slaves because they were many and he was afraid they would go to war against the Egyptians and ally with their enemies.
It is believed that the Hebrews were slaves for 400 or 430 years. It is not certain who this Pharaoh was, possibly Ramases II, and the Pharaoh symbolizes people who rebel against God.
Pharoah means big house, and was seen as a god, he was just under their main god Ra, the sun god.
Pharoah ordered that all the Hebrew baby boys be thrown in the Nile River, for them it was a god of fruitfulness.
The two midwives Shiphrah and Puah were brought in when they did not kill the Hebrew boys but the Hebrew women were strong enough to give birth on their own, unlike the Egyptian women.
God granted them families of their own. Pharoah can be seen as racist as he wanted to kill the Israelites while also wanting them to work as slaves.
