    Love the detail but seems like a lot of work for a napkin holder! Thank you for showing the many steps - helps me in visualizing projects. Love that you show the missteps, too.

      Yep. There are lots of simpler napkin holders. But it's a good project to try new things and stretch skills and different directions. And if you mess up then oh well. It's just a napkin holder.

    That's an interesting solution for a miter i may use it someday!

    I like the idea of your napkin holder. I have made two using a similar idea, but I have added a space for salt and pepper shakers. I also like the brass rods. I use dowels for miter joints, but I think I’ll try brass rods like you used. Thanks guy!

      I also made one with the S&P holes. Outlasted the shakers, so I had to hunt around for shakers with the right OD. I bored the big holes with a Russell Jennings bit and a brace owned by my grandfather (born 1874). Thanks for sharing.

    I had to go back and watch the video again. I thought "James are you using a toilet bowel seal to wax your saw?". I learn something new everyday!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. This is homemade paste wax. It's the same stuff I saw in my store as hard wax. I have a few videos on how to make it. Toilet bowl seal is beeswax but it has a much stickier substance mixed in with it.

    Pretty amazing work, James! 😃
    I've been thinking since I watched this in the other channel... I may try it!
    Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

    WOW!! I sense some negativity in these comments. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything. Thank you for the videos, and different skills and fun you can have in the shop.

      This channel has a tendency to get a lot of negative comments. I tend to live over on the other channel more though. That's for people who want to learn and see new things.

    It's a really cool video, a lot of handtools (I love it), with just a few comments on what your are doing. It makes me think to some japanese woodworking youtube channels.

    The sides should have been dovetailed to the bottom. Of course, if it were me, summer would have been over before I'd have been done. Thanks for letting us in on the fun! Hmm, you could have pout the sides on with the slot opening down so that the bar couldn't get lost too. < hmm, ideas, percolate...>

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Originally I was going to dovetail it cuz that's the most obvious way. But I wanted to experiment and try new things. I talk about that a good bit more on the how-to channel but this whole project was about playing with different concepts and trying something new.

  • @etiennefrancois9492

    Love your videos! A dovetail joint would have been a nice detail and would probably have been easier than the miter with just a hand plane😅 Would have also made it possible to use a natural glue instead of epoxy and it would probably even last longer

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was originally planning on doing that. But I wanted to try my skill on a slightly different manner on this one. I talk about that a good bit on the other channel in the how-to version. It would most definitely be a stronger joint. But sometimes it's good to stretch your skills in a different direction. I've done a lot of dovetails.

    Dunno why this came across my feed only today, YT subscriptions are so dumb. Anyways...
    Cool little project. I kept talking to the screen, ha ha.
    Dude, use a hacksaw instead of a file to flush the brass! And then you did. Cool.
    I saw you using tape for a saw depth stop. Nice, but you need a Geo. Bishop adjustable saw! I like mine a lot.
    And chamfering a dowel? Use a spoke pointer. More tools = more fun.
    I enjoy watching your builds on this channel, I feel right at home.
