Haha, oh yeah they may have ganged up on him. Or maybe one just realized they were bigger all of a sudden

Never hesitate to spank a fish. I use flexible bread ties. Keeps em in line real proper-like. Makes em respect rule and order.

I once had a flower horn and Jack Dempsey team up to kill a much larger Texas cichlid. In about a week the Dempsey was king of the tank. In another month the flower horn started getting mean as they usually do. I saw them locking jaws. Then all of a sudden boom the Dempseys jaw breaks. I couldn't save the fish. All other fish were plecos. Probably should have removed the Dempsey sooner but it was bigger so I assumed I had some time.

Great video! I literally just had a nearly identical situation in my predator hap tank. The hierarchy is a difficult game to play and can often make you feel like you’re doing something wrong as the aquarist. It’s great to see people being transparent about shared experiences 💯

Nice tank and setup. Sorry you lost some fish. It happens in our hobby. With that said, I'm DESPARATE! I lost my male Champsochromis carulius [Malawi Trout]. My girl is now 9-10i nches. He somehow found a way out of the tank & to the floor. Can you point me in a direction for a larger male? Some time back now, I was the Sales Mgr. for The Cichlid Exchange in Portland OR., owned by Steve Lundblad. I also helped open his now world famous The Wet Spot Tropical Fish Retail Store. I can get smaller ones from him, but so far none of size. Keep up the good work. Nice to see hobbyists put in the work like you guys. It shows! Thx again, Rich W.

Cichlids be crazy! I started my African cichlids tank 4 years ago. I had kept community tanks for years. The 1st fish I bought was a red shoulder peacock. He is just plain evil. And stunningly beautiful! I had him in the 125 G tank and he raised hell! I named him Satan. I still have him but in another tank with buenos Aries tetras and tiger barbs. Oddly enough it works! I have tried a few times to put back in the the 125 but it just does not work.

I've never had any luck with the Protomelas genus. All maniacs.
Open water Haps are generally not territorial unless spawning. Tangerine tigers on the other hand, set up territories and wait for females.

    Alec,
Those are so pretty yo watch them go back and forth like that. Such great colors. Unfortunately I lost over half my African cichlids just recently it was tragic. I lost them to high ammonia spike and it burned and killed almost my entire tank even when i did multiple water changes and multiple chemicals to detoxify the ammonia. I couldn't get it to go down I have done everything I can and even watched what i was feeding and even not feed them for a few days. My entire tank crashed and it sucks so much. they were mostly all juveniles. my last water change I did yesterday I completely took everything out decoration wise and all that was in there was fish and substrate and water. I completely overturned all the substrate and rotated it to see release all of the food or detritus that got stuck in the bottom substrate. I hope this works I don't know what else to do. I think it may have been from my full grown blood parrots because i read that they are very heavy polluters. It could have also been from let over food maybe that didn't get sucked up. I added sponge filters later after the tank was already set up to help gather any fish poop and food ate that hits the bottom. I also have a wave maker also and i never saw food on top of my substrate. I am hoping this works. Because i am out of options. I have to HOB filters on the 90 gal tank and 2 sponge filters in each corner so 4 filtration devices. All the cichlids were juveniles so they weren't even big enough to have that much waste. Are blood parrots really that bad at waste. I feel so bad that i lost so many fish and I feel it's my fault. uggh... I wish they could have been grown up fish. I guess I am not good enough to keep african cichlids and just need to stay with small community fish :(

Hi, I'm so sorry, I can only imagine how awful that feels. If it's any consolation I know I can't be the only beginner on here doing research before I make my big leap into tank life, so thank you for sharing your story. (I've made a mental note blood parrots look nice in *other* people's tanks!) I'm looking forward to see what advice you will be given.

How fast was the growth rate for the venustus giraffe hap to grow? I want to get one at 3 inches for my 75 gallon and once I upgrade before the end of the year (November) I just want to make sure he won't become a 10 monster before then.

Alec, I am looking at starting few large predator hap/common hap & a few peacocks, do you feel like this mix would work & do you feel like a 6’ long 240/gallon custom aquarium is large enough?

I’m actually trying to get rid of my malawi peacocks and haps, tired of the 1 fish owning half the tank thing lol it never ends, and if it does, it’s short lived. Thinking about doing a group of Frontosa and Multipunctatus Catfish instead. 😅

  • @timothyhoffman3470

You need more of them all males~ You have to have 75 to 100 of them In that tank^^

    • @timothyhoffman3470
      @timothyhoffman3470 ปีที่แล้ว

Too much open space for them they single each other out one by one!~ Unless you fill that thing up with more swimming action to have more mates to close off some of that open space~ Guppy's are the same you need to hammer them in big tanks It is mind blowing to see!~ Big Schools of fish keep each other at peace from stressing out on the bully wannabes !!
Its like a tank of Trumps They are all the same in the way they roll~ So even with a tank full of Trumps etc.. They would cancel each other out! Of an ego gone wrong~🐟🐟🐠🐟🐠🐡🐡 So yep you need some more fishes In that nice tank of yours!

    • @CichlidBros

It could be the tank size. We usually recommend a minimum of 75 gallons for one GT. Push that limit and aggression/water quality can become an issue
