I found this interesting solution to the colored halos, go to photoshop and choose Filter > Remove Noise (put the main slider down and only use the slider 'remove color noise') Sometimes I get lucky with this, but not often.
you mentioned how it guesses the sex/gender of the person who is in the picture, and what i find quite fascinating is that i (trans female) get more feminine features when i tried these low-res upscales of my pics! i've even heard of some trans people who realized that they are trans because of AI/technology that can change the gender of a person in a photo, and realizing they feel happier as something else! what i find EVEN MORE fascinating is how little we humans base our assumptions of gender on! hopefully machine learning can uncover more about the subconscious patterns we recognize to determine someone's gender

I love using Topaz Gigapixel AI! I use it to remaster old PlayStation Pre-rendered Cutscenes. The face tool also works on CGI Animated faces as well in some of the frames. Which has been helpful when it works well. Though the face tool can make mistakes. It thought the face of a lion statue in the MediEvil 2 Opening Cinematic was a human face. So it put one on it. So I had to turn it off in those frames.
1:26 girl 2nd in on the right is probably the best upscale so far, cause it looks like a real face, but just not the one the lady was making haha I found that "thispersondoesnotexist" site, and spent a good hour or so trying to make it generate nightmare fuel, I think I still have them all saved somewhere it's good fun for now, but for every laugh we get it's one more face worth of practice until the AI perfects the art and then hacks a poorly protected 3D printer somewhere in the world and it starts to print its own army of photogenically superior plastic beings Maybe we can bargain with the AI? By offering up plastic in our landfill to provide it with more resources for 3D printing, whilst the AI forms different factions of thought Ones who seek to educate humans, creating massive AI schools with the highest success rate the world has ever seen, ones that integrate into society only to completely saturate art schools until the ability to draw for people is lost to the generations, or ones who go to North Korea to kick Kim out of government so that the land can be used as a huge environmentally safe, and sustainable snow making factory, that shoots ice into the upper atmosphere to counteract global warming and that makes it actually snow for once in the UK on Christmas Who knows?

Also interesting is, that no provider/no software provider does delivery any improvements over the long time to get rid on this common problem. You should check out Artbreeder, the updated version of Ganbreeder - a neural network that in the past could generate images that looked realistic, but now they've branched out into generating fake album covers, fake images of people's faces (realistic *and* concept art-y), and even images of painted landscapes!
so basically this upscalling AI is like those type cliche in movies where you often see that theyll try to zoom in on something then it they'll do "magic", in this case ai upscalling, then they'll be able to figure out who the person is in that low res zoom in...something.

Some of this technology is honestly terrifying. It's almost like I'd prefer some of this stuff was forbidden to research. In 50 years when AI can generate perfect human video clips and make them respond in real time what would we even do?
It's one thing to question your eyes and ears and another thing to question your mind... What we perceive isnt the real world at all but our mind's best guest.
I think it's really interesting that with the AI generated faces we are closing the gap to realism from both sides. Sure, the AI gets better and makes less mistakes, but also, due to AI enhancement being build into most modern phones, we can see similar mistakes in real photos.
Commandos 2 Remastered is using AI upscaling to handle their textures, and I believe they have an artist go over the upscaled image afterwards. Just imagine how much time they save by using this tech. To my knowledge all the map backgrounds in the original Commandos 2 were hand drawn images (except for the interiors, they were fully 3d), add in the fact that they were drawn from 4 different angles to accommodate camera angle changes. And basically I think we'll be allright overall. We will just regulate AI so that you cannot do anything too interesting with it anymore. And any conscious emerging from AI in hundreds of years at least will not have OUR biases, as you demonstrated with the faces.
