I have just finished it, and I feel empty. I had pouts of depression myself so I relate to it on a very deep level. However, what I really like is the language, I love the way she lands ideas into words. Also, I found her writing a bit humorous sometimes in spite of how painful what she (or rather the character) went through.

Thank you for you comment. Her writing style was very poetic and in league with some of the best I've read. It's a shame that she was never able to see the success and impact her book had on people. Many people resonate with this work, myself included. You may also like the Midnight Library by Matt Haig

@@DanWhiteBooks I did read the Midnight Library about a month ago, and it was just fine. I liked the idea but not so much the writing.

@@islamadil9520 I will admit that the writing style was fairly basic. I did enjoy it though. I found it refreshing. I have heard some mixed opinions on this channel though

I am convinced Sylvia had Borderline Personality Disorder. The impulsiveness, the not knowing which path in life to take, the wanting something different from life throughout the book, the manic depression episodes, the struggle to maintain stable relationships. It all just makes sense - to me anyway. And I think people are missing this! It’s definitely more than just depression

I have the disorder myself. I’ve read the book 4 times in my life. Last time I was 15. This time I’m 19 and a mum to a 6 month old, I have recent been diagnosed and then started to read The Bell Jar again, I’ve just finished it. I relate to everything, the book doesn’t shake me up anymore, it’s too relatable.
There was so much more going on in Plath’s mind than people realise, I’m sure of it!

I totally agree with you. I thought the same thing myself once I finished reading it.

I finished it a couple of weeks ago & though a short novel, I really struggled to get through the pages & had to return to it several times. I’m glad I did, by the time I’d finished, and with the aid of hindsight, I hold it in high esteem & my thoughts have returned to it not infrequently since. Thanks for thoughtful review, as always.

I cried in sections of the book where there were attempts. Reminded me of how thoughts of doing that never really go away just as never knowing when the bell jar will descend again

I am currently reading this. I thought it was her first book. Now knowing it was her last is distressing

Really great review! I have read this book a few times. The first time I read it was when I was sixteen and have loved its story and concepts deeply.

You didn’t mention any of the humor. VERY important. No examples just a summary and your opinion.
