I shoot a lot of self-hosted scenes, and it happens occasionally that I look back at the footage and realize that I missed a pimple I couldn't see when applying cover up. So using the tracker in DaVinci Resolve I'll apply a little DIGITAL cover up instead. There are many ways to achieve this result in DaVinci Resolve, including an OpenFX plugin called "Patch Replacer" which automates the process. However, by following the technique in this short tutorial video, you'll learn additional skills such as creating corrector nodes, using motion tracking, node sizing and mid/detail to enhance video. I promise you, you'll love adding these tools to your video editor's toolbelt!
Hey man, just wanted to leave a comment to bump the algo. This should be the top result for free version users. I tried like 3 other videos before finding this and they all half worked. I was getting only partial tracking and couldn't figure out why. This solved it! Oh and the softening was nice to haha. Definitely learned 2 things today
That is incredible - thank you so much! I did a video intro with a huge insect bite on my forehead and didn't even notice - huge red blotch, really distracting. I tried playing about with face refinement and forehead desaturation but it looked really unnatural. This made it magically disappear. Really grateful 🙏
Oh I'm so glad to hear this! That my wee tutorial was so specifically helpful to your project warms my heart. Thanks for letting me know, and I hope the video turned out great.
Suuuuuper helpful! Best I've found yet for this topic after several videos (free version). Was able to cover a distracting stain on clothing. For me, I did find it often helpful to do the node sizing work before tracking, only because then if I had to do frame by frame updates, I wouldn't have to redo them later for the offset. Thanks for the great help!
So true. I use the free version of Davinci...I suppose I can't complain. However, I spend so much time, "re-finding my place in the timeline" b/c each time I perform an action, Davinci, bumps me to the beginning of my timeline. I spend 2/3rds of my time refinding my place. Nothing bad on The Show Show...it's all on Davinci...
I'm still here! 😊 I do these tutorials in between our production schedule at Category5 Technology TV. Currently we are wrapping up season 15. Once the season is complete I'll be back to posting some more tutorials until season 16 begins, and I should be able to provide more than ever in 2023. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Hi, thanks for this video! It's the first I've seen that is clear and easy! I've wanted to remove dust and fluff etc so many times, but so far I have been forced to just give up. Every other video speeds past small steps and/or uses the complex Fusion method for simple small areas like this (on top of including chatter and distracting information) that I haven't been able to follow 🙏🏼 ... One question, however, why do you apply the Mid Detail via a node?
Glad you enjoyed. Reason I use a node for each effect (such as mid detail) is to make it easy to enable/disable to compare the impact while grading, and also so it is easier / faster to redo effects that have an impact on my grade. This example is basic, but you can imagine with a lot of grades, vignettes, chroma key mats, etc., a single node would get really cluttered. So it's about having a good workflow overall that meets my requirement for fast turnaround and ease of finding where I made changes.
My brother, this was on point. I hope the algorithm treats you well. I will like share and subscribe. most tutorials are full of fluff, this is not. of course there are some tutorials that are expected to be long, maybe even difficult. On the other hand a creator should develop tutorials that are simple as possible from time to time to reward their subscribers for their patience and in the end everyone wins.
Thanks so much. I too hope the algorithm treats the channel well and helps me to be able to offer many more of these types of videos. I enjoy sharing bits of information that when combined become a very powerful toolbox. Thanks for watching and for subscribing.
Very helpful! I don't have a corrector node DR V. 18.6. Somehow it's not working for me. Done all tracking, but when I go to sizing node and apply the tilt and pan, they don't move. Please advise and thanks.
Hi! Thanks for this helpful tutorial. One issue I encounter is that the skin patch turns out to be half-transparent/have low opacity despite me not having done anything to it. Do you have idea why that happens?
Thanks so much for the video, helped me a lot. Just a question, if there is a color variation in the image and not the same color (skin like your video) can this work? I have red burned sensor marks in a all my footage and trying to find ways to fix it.
Jesus f**king Christ! Thank you so much. I watched like 10 different videos on this (all showing it done different ways) and this was the simplest one. ❤️

Glad you were able to take what you learned here and adapt it to your specific use case! Well done. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely the best vid on this subject. Hands down. Thanks!
You are so kind, thank you!
Great video, extremely helpful. The only note: I found Blur more useful for me than Sizing. Especially on dynamic scenes.
Really nice. I'll give it a try.
Thank you SO much! This was so helpful! What I really like about it is that its simple. Many thanks again
My pleasure! Thank you for the great feedback!
How unfriendly this app is.... You have to be a scientist to fix a freaking pimple...
