As far as I understand, the guy behind Tone City worked for Joyo, then he designed these pedals for Movall, quit and started ToneCity... so now the ToneCity pedals are IDENTICAL to the 12 Movall pedals... crazy chinese trading places game.... but bottom line... they ARE great pedals !
Is it even as complicated as quitting and designing more pedals, or are they just all pedals from the same factory rebranded under a bunch of different badges?

The plexi pedal has to be one of the only distortion pedals I've ever heard that actually sounds like its a distortion channel straight from an amplifier.

I agree with The Captain that Golden Plexi sounded better with the Telecaster. The Les Paul sounds a bit thick and muddy to my oldish (48 y o) ears. Weird!!!
I agree the Tele sounded a bit better. The LesPaul sounded a bit well muddy to me. It could have been a combination of the guitar and the amp settings not being quite right for the LesPaul though but thats just a guess on my part.

I am in Turkey and I bought a bad horse from Andertons. Shipment and packaging were really really good. Shipment guys brought my package this morning, 3 days after ordering. I am really impressed thank you guys! Tone city pedals have incredible build quality. They are much better than Joyo or Mooer. And bad horse is amazing.
Sadly, I couldn't afford to buy them from you because the shipping drove it up too much, but because of your review I now have the Golden Plexi, Sweet Cream, Bad Horse, Mandragora and Black Tea (free shipping here in the States). They are all excellent pedals and seem to be built like the proverbial brick outhouse. Keep up the excellent reviews. Chappers and The Captain have the best reviews on TH-cam (and Rabea, too).

Rob, your reaction to the golden plexi is priceless. man. I totally agree...from this side of youtube it sounds amazing as well. When you see a seasoned veteran musician get excited about something, you know it's really good. I play mostly clean, mild over drive or with a wah. I've never been happy with my dirty sound. Just purchased a "HotWax" pedal, which I really like so far, but that Tone City golden plexi will be joining my pedal line up. My ML-1 pro traditional will be delivered today. I don't think I've been so excited about a guitar. I'll be playing at my next show on the 28th.

I got a trip to Andertons for my 30th birthday 2 years ago. I met the Captain and told him I was going to buy a Golden Plexi because of this video, and he said "That's the best 40 quid you'll ever spend". And it was. Playing Meshuggah through a Golden Plexi with low gain->clean Tiny Terror->WGS Veteran 30, sounds KILLER!

Don't talk shit until you've experienced what it's like to build pedals as a job..there are a lot more expenses than you consider. Parts, employee wages (if applicable), finishing and labelling, website hosting, copyrights, packaging, marketing, shipping, the builder's profit margin (so they can Continue to build), and then the retailer's own profit margin. These things add up.
Rhop None of that justifies it. The pedal business isn't dramatically different than any other. Simple fact is most stuff on the market is a copy, or 'interpretations' of something already in existence. Whether it's circuit board or point to point, we're talking about components that are pennies. It's price gouging and nothing more. "Oooooh, it's a boutique pedal designed off this circuit. That means it's $200 ... or more!" No.
Found on the web : the golden plexy is based on the Carl Martin plexy tone which is a very good pedal. I've ordered a golden one yesterday ! Thanks for your great videos !

Golden Plexi and Angel Wing.. only missing EMG81&85s in a Les Paul ;) And Capt Lee is spot on with manufacturing in China. When I tried out the Yamaha acoustics that are made in China... I stopped generalizing products manufactured in China.
Guys, your videos are great and I like the extended stuff you provide, but, a small suggestion: make your videos a little smaller! When I see a video is 43 minutes, I'm gonna skip it 'cause I have no time. If it's 10-15 minutes, it's much easier to draw more people to see your video. Of course, it's good to have a lot of content, but many users can't spend so much time on one video! Anyway, keep the videos coming!

Bad Horsie is a Klone (Klon clone). It's made to be used as a transparent overdrive to thicken up the tone, not to be used to create your dirty sounds (though you can use it that way, you just are then wasting its potential). Edit: Oops. I did it again…
the smallest rig challenge would be awesome. two rigs each: rig 1 - small and cheap, rig 2 - small and made up of the best gear. love your challenge vids please do more of them :)
Hey Chappers...your range of OD pedals gotta be damn exceptional to compete with these gems, They got the voicing of each pedal spot on, each one individual and usable! Think the choice of guitar played a BIG difference as the ChappedTele sounded more alive than the LP which to my ears was a bit mudded. The FuxxFuzz was literally crying for a wanged Strat, feedback and wah.
Rob, loved the Smashing Pumpkins bit, not what most would expect, but a massive favourite for me. Ever check out a canadian band called Big Sugar? . Cheers !!
Very minor quibble, and/or suggestion for future vids: Love the overhead angle on the pedals, but I'd like to see what The Hand is doing to them :). Maybe twiddle them with an extended finger instead of like they're MiniMoog dials? Just a thought.
Well it is all subjective in the end. To me the Telecaster sounded better. I am sure some people thought the LP sounded better. I mean both did sound good. I just liked the Tele better.
I have got a golden plexi for about 5 months, sounds really good, on my amp, it sounds a little less thick , but it still does a great job. The led light does not work properly, but it does not bother me :) id absolutely recommend it
Despite myself and my ideas about not using pedals when your amp can do it, I love the sound Rob got with the Golden Plexi used with the "Tele". Not so keen on the LP/GP combination, though.
The problem with having a very small pedal board (the smallest pedal board challenge) is that it might be difficult to step on it, like in my case where I wear size 11 boots as a "gig uniform". These pedals are sweet though and they will best be useful in occupying those "extra spaces" on a standard pedal board.

I hate to say it, but that tele clone really sounds WAY better than the LP. The LP is bass-heavy and muddy in comparison.

You can get/make battery clips that plug into the DC jack on the pedal. It's good to have them on hand regardless.

I have got a golden plexi for about 5 months, sounds really good, on my amp, it sounds a little less thick , but it still does a great job. The led light does not work properly, but it does not bother me :) id absolutely recommend it
These actually seem to sound amazing
Despite myself and my ideas about not using pedals when your amp can do it, I love the sound Rob got with the Golden Plexi used with the "Tele". Not so keen on the LP/GP combination, though.
The Squier classic Vibe is also a good example of good Chinese products made cheap.
First time they've played riffs I can relate to - Quiet & Cherub rock.
The problem with having a very small pedal board (the smallest pedal board challenge) is that it might be difficult to step on it, like in my case where I wear size 11 boots as a "gig uniform". These pedals are sweet though and they will best be useful in occupying those "extra spaces" on a standard pedal board.
Just ordered a few of these from Andertons, waiting for them to be shipped across the pond!
