This song was originally titled "Suicide." They were told they couldn't use that title, so changed it to Chop Suey. The part of the video where Serg is eating chop suey out of a Chinese food box and looking at the camera with that deadpan look was him saying F you to the sensor lol
They were having troubles putting lyrics to the bridge and the producer (Rick Ruben) told Serg to grab a book off the shelf and turn to a random page. So he did, and Rick asked him whats the first verse on the page. And thats where the "Father into your hands..." part comes from... well thats how it made its way into the song.
This song came out around 2001 and landed on a list of songs the radio stations avoided playing immediately after the 9/11 attacks. Probably cuz of the lyric “when angels deserve to die”.
Love SOAD their name comes from a poem Daron wrote with the belief that if we don't act to change for the better we will become less feeling and turn more cruel and animal like until the world is thrown into total chaos. They are of Armenian heritage and most of their songs have political meanings. They were all about fighting the system.
I have to relay that I watched a reaction video of this from two women who were in their 60s and 70s. The both liked it, and had zero alarm about the tattoos and crazy eyes. But one mentioned that they all looked too skinny. The other one said, "Yes, I just want to feed them peanut brittle." I can't get it out of my head. Whenever I hear this song or see this video, I feel an urge to hand out peanut brittle. I mean, when you get to be our age (I'm in my 50s), you ignore all the surface stuff like crazy hairstyles and tattoos and piercings, and just want the kids to be healthy and happy.
They are Armenian, the song is about people being judged for the way they died comedy wanted to call the song suicide but the record I wouldn't think that was a good idea so they chopped up the word suicide hence the name chop suey
They should create a SOAD rollercoaster 😄this is one Legend group that will take you on that ride, that's why it's over a Billion views. Thank you for more SOAD, I love this band🤘😎 unique, strong messages. Darron (guitarist) those are not real tattoos only for video.
I came for System of a Down… I’m staying because if the Naruto music in the beggining lol…..check out these guys harmonies in some songs like question, and hypnotize…. Also maybe an orochimaru’s theme opening lol…. 👍 subbed
The entire band is american of armenian decent. Thats the accent you hear. It also effects their falsettos, theirs are of higher frequency because of their unique sound
Hey Justice, U have to look at it as a theme of suicide and being judged on how we die. With religious undertones, on how society views certain deaths. Much like Christ crying out Father why hast thou forsaken me? Is it a self rightious suicide, sacrifice, murder? We fear judgement, pain, battling our inner demons, yet judge others for fearing the same. Their music is complex yet thought provoking. Powerful band, love their energy. Thanx so much, Peace
Def some deep lyrics here. "Self righteous suicide" and "angels deserve to die" is in reference to good people who die from drug overdoses and are slandered and called horrible people because of their addiction. People will say a good person deserved to die because they were hooked on heroin or whatever, hence "angels deserve to die."

They made them change it cause 9/11 just happened.
Serj not Serg
it was ‘Self-righteous Suicide’ originally. (at least from Rick Rubin’s words.)
Part 2: also, he was indeed eating chop suey at the same time he got that call saying they couldn’t use that title lol.
@@Maxwellishthe bass player himself said it was suicide and at the start of the song serj says “we’re rolling suicide”
BYOB!!!! It's a must!
Will do
The part where he's saying "Father, why have you forsaken me?" are words Jesus himself said while being tortured on the crucifix.
Yes I knew I recognized that

Not just around 2001, but precisely the 4/11. That was retrospectively a bad timing.
