20 years ago I celebrated my 22nd birthday in mainland China. (Right during the time when the IOC announced that Beijing won the Olympic bid that year) I was there teaching English to older students (17 to 19 years old average) who already had a good grasp of English but needed to round out their conversational English style and understand slang etc... One of my students was around 17 years old and was Mongolian. Not sure what circumstances led him to be in southern China learning English with me... but he was very much respected by all the other students. He was physically the most muscular and tallest of my students...had a gentle giant personality... and took it upon himself to become sort of like my personal bodyguard/translator lol. Because this was when the Olympic bid was taking place, the Chinese gov't had made it clear that there would be no tolerance for any crimes against foreigners.. They wanted nothing to hurt their chances of winning the bid. It was between Toronto and Beijing for the final 2 cities and I'm Canadian, so my Mongolian student thought he had to shadow me everywhere to make sure I didn't get myself into any trouble lol. He was always around...watching out for me... and wouldn't take no for an answer when I constantly told him I would be fine and didn't need a bodyguard etc. Anyways... on my last day at the school and it was time to be paid for my contract...the head of the school tried to pay me half of what was negotiated which led to an argument obviously...but there was a language barrier making it difficult..and very heated. My Mongolian student pushed the curtain aside from an open window in this man's office (he had been outside the window listening the whole time) and asked if I was ok. I said yes. He then had a conversation with the head of the school which I didn't understand, the whole while standing outside this man's office window and just poking his head through!! Lol. I still don't know what was said between my student and the school head... but the man pulled out a DIFFERENT envelope from his desk than the one he was originally trying to give me, and the second envelope had my full negotiated payment in it. When I walked outside the building...ALL of my Chinese students were there to escort me to the ride to the bus that would take me to the border back to Hong Kong. It was apparently all arranged by my Mongolian student, because he seemed to know I might have trouble getting paid. I learned later that the guy who hired me had a reputation for being dishonest with foreign teachers etc... Anyways sorry for the long story... but I am a huge fan of the HU Band and also a huge fan of the whole Mongolian people and culture. And it all started with my amazing Mongolian student/self appointed bodyguard 😎 Just wanted to share a positive story...dont see enough of them in the internet these days!!
