    Hi Andy Tube, Thank you so much for all of your videos! The pace is perfect, the explanations are clear, and the visuals are well lit. I have a Singer 457 Stylist, given to me as a gift, in late 1968 to early 1969, by my mom when I bought my first home. It needed a repair about 5 years ago, but now works beautifully; I am retired and now have time to thoroughly enjoy the Stylist. I learned so much from watching several of your TH-cam videos!! I'm very grateful!! Ronnie

      You are very kind to make such a nice comment about my videos, and you are surely welcome. Allow me to thank you for getting your machine back in service. It's a worthy sewing and crafting model and your Mom was very thoughtful in choosing it for a new homeowner! Thank you, Mom! Take care, Ronnie, and thanks for watching Andy Tube.

    This series you have made on the 457 is truly a godsend! I just acquired one and had no idea where to start. You are so knowledgeable about how this machine works and I love how you provide little tidbits that explain the "why" of the machine's design. I have learned so much because of you and I will certainly keep watching! Thank you!

    I appreciate your videos, especially these on the Singer 457 Stylist...I learned how to sew on one like this many years ago. I have been looking for a used machine like this for a while now. I'll keep looking until I can find one in good shape with the manual and extra feet. Keep on providing these very informative, instructional videos. They are a great help to many people.

      You are so welcome! I hope you can find what you want. Try the auctions at www.shopgoodwill.com/ I see that style of machine there sometimes. Please know about the trouble spot on the 457. The plastic gear on top of the vertical shaft is known to break. That's why it may be at goodwill. The good news is you can replace that for $10 so with a cheap broken 457 +$10 + a couple hours you can have a great machine. Here is the gear replacement video if you ever need it. Thanks for the video Andy, my 457 is still working great. Just picked up a Singer Touch Tronic Model 2001 for 25$. Motor was seized, but a little Tri Flow and got it going again. Fabricated new mounts for the motor from some nylon sheet. This machine is nice but way to much electronics for my taste. Keep up the videos.

      Thank you, Sir. I'm glad your Touch Tronic is working. The only one I ever had the card was bad. I bought a used one and it was also defective. That was my one and only electronic machine, haha. If you want to have some fun, keep your eyes out for a 353/354 Genie Model. Just be sure the hook turns before you buy it. My favorite "Good to Go" portable Singer.

    Thank you so much for your helpful videos. I was looking for information about a reliable sewing machine that can handle without a problem denim and leather for home projects and that is how I found your channel. I immediately knew you are someone with knowledge and indeed knows how to teach or share it. I am Peruvian but I have lived in the States for almost 4 years. My mother has a tailor shop in Peru and that was my first contact with sewing machines. My mother's sewing machines are Singer. Here, I learned about quilting and sewing (I should have paid more attention when I was in Peru but I was a spoiled girl who only had to ask for a dress and never touch the machine) so now that I know at least how to do basic stitches, I want to make a leather apron for my husband (his hobby is welding) but with my current sewing machine can't handle it. If you have any advice or lead, I will truly appreciate it. Have a wonderful week!

      Hi Evelyne. If you mean an apron like this industrialsafety.com/tillman-3836-bib-apron-leather-24x36-dark-brown-c34138361.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_vmcyO3D4QIV7x6tBh3RAQE7EAYYBCABEgK-hPD_BwE
      Then just about any machine on my channel could sew it with the right needle. th-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists?view_as=public
      Models 301A and 404 stand out and are also the favorites of quilters. Model 403A if you want Zigzag and pattern stitching.
      237, 239, 337 & 338 could certainly do it. If you wanted to be sewing MANY leather goods then maybe a model 15-90 or 15-91 black iron horse models or the 3/4 size 99K like "Cute" on my channel. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIIUgkEujqHc9iNWN9NPW2Z.html
      Other than that an industrial machine is always the best for lots of leather work.
      Almost any of the vintage Singer machines can sew garment leather with a leather needle and a roller or walking foot attachment.
      They will certainly sew denim with the proper denim needle.

      @@andytubesewing1953 Thank you so much for your help. While looking to buy a sewing machine, I found a Singer 237 for $50; Singer 401A for $175; Singer 348 for $100, Viking 6020 for $75 and a Brother Charger 651 for $35. To be honest, the money is also a big factor but I don't want to waste it either. Once again I bother you. Which one will you recommend me, please?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would buy the 237. Not much to go wrong with it. Mechanically simple and strong. If it turns out it is not enough for your needs, a $50 working Singer is easy to sell. The 401A is way overcomplicated, many more parts to maintain. It is strong, but overkill. The 348 is pretty, but not $50 better than the 237 UNLESS you want to sew patterns. If you do then that is the one as long as it comes with the COMPLETE attachment set including the pattern discs. If it does not then do not pay $100 unless it has been restored. You can get parts for the Singers fairly easy on eBay and Bonanza; even Amazon now. I do not work on or know Viking or Brother machines. If you buy a Singer let me know which model, please. My email is on the "ABOUT" page of my channel. Best Wishes. Ahí nos vidrios

      If by service she means cleaning and lubrication, that is normal. Make sure the plus/minus dial on the tension moves towards you when you lift the presser foot. You know how to bring up the bobbin thread? doing that is a partial test for timing. If the needle thread brings up the bobbin thread that is good. Take a screwdriver and look at the motor belt and timing belt for cracks and aging. Sew on it if you can. I bought this model with full attachments for $35 last February in Apache Junction, Arizona.
      Go here for a FREE copy of the Singer Instruction Manual if you need a copy before going to look at the machine.

    Thank you for your incredibly helpful videos. My Singer 457 gives off a slight electrical/burning odor. I cleaned it up and rehabbed it last week and I’ve been doing light sewing, hoping the odor will improve with use. Do you know what could cause an electrical type odor?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have noticed that type of smell and sometimes it comes from an old motor belt.
      When it gets dried out it can develop thin cracks and the edges can start to fray.
      If you remove the motor (end) cover and see black dust it's a good clue. You can also run the machine in bobbin winding mode with the motor cover off and see if the smell gets stronger.
      If you're not familiar with removing the cover (or belt) here is a video of a different model that has a similar set up as your 457 th-cam.com/video/RuOLUVPsQv8/w-d-xo.html
      If the belt need replacement there are several places to buy one. Here is just one example: www.ebay.com/itm/166246384323?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&srsltid=AfmBOoptmRKFJtywvAZhM-Jkz--MR2LeZ244UFd21YZvYnoVpo_ihe3NYDQ
      Rarely you can get that smell if oil got on the belt, pulley or windings of the motor.
      There is also a timing belt on the bottom of the machine, but I've never got that smell from a timing belt. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.

    Hi Andy, I enjoy your videos, great work. My wife's 457 Singer that I bought for her 52 years ago stopped catching the bobbin thread. Thanks to your video I found out the problem was the top gear on the vertical shaft had broke. I am in the process of obtaining a new one to replace it. A couple other questions however. Do you know where I can purchase the screw that goes in the end of the stitch length lever. Ours got lost awhile back. In addition I had removed the screw holding the bobbin on/off lever in place and now it is loose when turning it off and on. The two top washers under the screw head are there, and the bottom washer at the bottom of the lever but I am wondering is a small spring got lost when I removed the screw or I don't have the two top washers which are a bit concave positioned properly. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada so not sure where I could get the parts such as the screw and whatever I may need fot the bobbin lever. Appreciate whatever advice you can give - Dave

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you. The stitch length lever screw usually must be purchased from someone who is "parting out" a machine, meaning selling off the parts on eBay or similar site
      www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1313&_nkw=singer+model+457+parts&_sacat=0 I usually have the best luck on eBay and many of the sellers will ship to Canada. I doubt anyone will sell just the screw but only the lever, thumb screw, and retaining screw. I have a list of some of the Singer screw sizes. That screw is Part Number 141183 but it is not on any size list I have. I don't know if something like eBay exists in Canada. There is NOT any spring used on the bobbin winder lever/bracket. There are 4 washers. The one on the bottom under the lever is what I'd call a "plain" or "standard" washer. The top three washers are "cupped" to provide tension on the lever. They would be considered "friction" washers and they go on in this sequence: Number one washer ( top) cup facing down, Number two washer (middle) cup facing up, and Number three washer (bottom) cup facing down. The part number of those washers is 45775 and again I have no size listed and would need to buy them used from an online seller or find something similar at a local hardware store. Thanks for keeping the machine in service. It is a worthy model.

    I have a problem with filling the bobbin on my 457. It starts to fill and then stops and no longer goes around. In the past I have taken my machine in for cleaning etc but have not done so for awhile.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "have not done so for awhile" hehe. It may be lack of oil or it may be the tire on the winder is hard and old and can't grip the back of the handwheel. If you lat the machine on its back and put a drop of oil on the side of the spindle that you put the bobbin on to wind the oil can seep down into the bushing. You can twist the spindle back & forth with your fingers to spread it in the bushing. You may notice it becomes easier to turn. If oiling does not help you can check/replace the bobbin tire by removing the top cover and peeking at it. If it seems hard and old or cracking you can replace it by removing the bracket and twisting the tire off and stretching on a new one which you can buy at many places online. I have a video about the parts you can watch just to get an idea. It was made with a different model of Singer but the BW parts are the same: th-cam.com/video/r6m2QvUJDmo/w-d-xo.html

      Have you taken the handwheel off the machine before? Cleaned it? The handwheel buahing and hole in the wheel may be dirty and sticky and need a good cleaning. Sometimes people put the clampnig washer on backwards or turned 180 deg the wrong way. If there is a lot of oil on the handwheel bushing it can grab the wheel while spining and make the needle keep moving. Here are a couple good videos about removing and installing a handwheel. You do not need to remove the bushing. Please don't. Just take it off and clean the wheel and the bushing and clamp, etc. and put back on like in the video and see what happens. Handwheel off:
