    I liked your calmness. I guess I could tolerate some dirt inside the bearings for a 100% rain setup. I would love to see a video in which you test the limits on taking turns over wet asphalt. I have skated in the rain just a couple times and is so hard to trust carving.

      Thank you! Great video idea too: something to try this autumn or winter. A tip for taking turns on wet asphalt: keep your inner foot under your hip and roll on the centre edge. You can use your outer foot for braking, but your inner foot, which carries must of your weight, must remain under your hip to prevent sliding out. Also try to get as low as possible for extra balance.
      The most important thing is to practise. The technique for carving wet asphalt itself is pretty easy, but you've got to get familiar with wet surfaces to build up confidence. Explore your edges, practise using your weight, _feel_ what you can and cannot do. And have fun!

    For longer service life, i'd recommend something like yer shimano bicycle grease. most skate bearings have an open back so i just squidge it in there. They might feel a bit sluggish in your first few strides but when they get up to temp they roll like anything else - and you don't have to worry about the weather! I don't even bother towelling them off after a wet skate, just drip dry. grease stops the moisture ingress so you're good to go next ride!
    I feel like people can be overly persnickety about bearings. If you're gonna be skating in rough conditions anyway, why not go for a heavy duty solution? (they're nice and quiet, too)
    Happy rolling!

      I've got bicycle grease (meant for mountainbikers) too, but to apply that, I have to remove my bearings from the wheels and I'm just too _lazy_ for that. 😅 (Sorry not sorry.)
      I'm keeping the grease as a back-up, but for now, Xeramic does a truly wonderful job. It's easy, fast and it works.
      (By the way, kudos for "persnickety," love that word!)

    I might just have to try this method too since I'm also from a rainy, cold country. I hope WD40 will work too since I probably won't find the same spray lube you're using. Two pairs of oxelo skates are already on the way to my house: the MF500 and 900 and I'll just use some machine abec 1 bearings since you can literally get them dirt cheap. I might even buy a 3rd pair of oxelo skates for a rain setup, this time from the used market to make it even cheaper. Used oxelo 500 or 900 go for around 50euro. A can of lube spray around 2-5euro and we'll see how it goes.

    Nice video, Tim. Question. I see u using the regular (bones?) bearings, why not use the Storm Bearings that are rust-proof? A bit more expensive, but you don't need to spray that often I guess.

      I’m using Wicked ABEC 9 bearings in most of my setups. I’ve actually used two sets of Twincam Storm bearings and they exploded while I was skating, the balls flying all over the asphalt. (Luckily, I didn’t fall.) Cleaning those bearings had made them very unstable.
      So why should I pay more when a little maintenance can keep _regular_ bearings rolling anyway? Spraying a little lubricant is a lot less hassle than getting the bearings out of the wheels, removing the shields and getting the dirt out manually. That’s why I don’t see the point of rustproof bearings. (Except for off-road setups maybe.)

      @TheRollingRaptor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm using regular Powerslide Megacruiser wheels. I have to mind my strides and my edges in rainy weather, but I don't really feel the need for special rain wheels. And from what I heard, they don't help against the oily film of rotting leaves in autumn anyway, so I'll just keep skating regular wheels. :-)

      Torrent wheels are nice in the wet but if you also use 'em on dry asphalt these wear down fast and once the inner band is exposed become unskateable 😓

  • @zhuliks
    @zhuliks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I would remove the bearings cover first, its real easy and fast to do and lubricant would apply better. Plus totally would remove the inliner, it must be soaking wet

    • @TheRollingRaptor
      @TheRollingRaptor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zhuliks Nah, the lubricant gets into the bearings anyway, removing the shields makes no difference whatsoever. But removing the shields does make the bearings unstable. I’ve done that a couple of times and I came to regret it big time. Trust me: your bearings exploding is not something you want to happen when you’re skating full speed. That’s why I strongly recommend to leave the shields in place. Xeramic will do its job just fine, as you can see in the video.
      Oh, and my liners weren’t soaked this time. If they were, of course I would’ve removed them to let them dry out. It’d be stupid not to. (I had to do that often enough last winter, unfortunately.)

    • @zhuliks
      @zhuliks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheRollingRaptor Maybe you are right, you had more time with this as for liners I assumed with holes in front and skating deep pudles its inevitable, but my skates have more holes so while its absolutely fun to ride in a warm summer rain I have no choice but to dry abssolutely everything after. Even if I wrap liners in a plastic bag water will be inside the boot so taking everything out is the only way each session.
      P.S.: I was considering getting rust free ones, but you have a good point about dirt

    • @TheRollingRaptor
      @TheRollingRaptor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@zhuliks The Oxelo MF500 is a pretty good boot for riding in the rain since the shell hasn't got too many openings. My Powerslide Next on the other hand has got a big ventilation hole on the bottom, so even a moderately wet road is enough to give you wet feet. 🤦‍♂ The FR boot is rather open at the top, so that also means drying out the liner. But even the MF500 shell of course doesn't protect the line against severe rain. Nothing to do about that. 🤷‍♂
      The main problem, I think, with rustproof bearings is that people delay maintenance. So more dirt gets into the bearings and then there's no other option than removing the shields for a thorough cleaning. That's why I think it makes more sense to opt for a fast and easy cleaning routine, that even works with cheaper regular bearings. 👍

    • @zhuliks
      @zhuliks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @TheRollingRaptor Ye, I have next boots so few times caught in rain was a lot of work after. But on 125 wheels liners were much less wet after than on 90. I was very worried about rust and dirt so each time I took bearings out and disassembled completely up to separate ball, cleaned all of oil and dirt and then applied grease and oil again.
      Thats why Im not very fond of riding on any wet surface, its thinking of all the maintenance after

    Best method to clean bearings is to open them then put them into some ISO 99% alcohol and gently shake. Then let them dry and finally add some oil for bearings. That's how you clean rustproof bearings. Also, rustproof means it will never rust because of rolling under the rain, so of course it's not dirtproof, it's pure logic idk why people think they will buy rustproof bearings to never have to take care of them. You do that with the cheapest bearings, not the rustproof or ceramic one.

    • @TheRollingRaptor
      @TheRollingRaptor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I kindly disagree. I cleaned my rustproof bearings like that - taking the shields off, getting the dirt out with a special cleaning solution and a brush, oiling the bearings, and so on - and the result was that my bearings became unstable and finally exploded.
      Also: why would you pay more and lose more time with cleaning rustproof bearings, when you can keep cheaper regular bearings rolling with an easy cleaning method anyway? A quick cleaning routine saves time and money. If cleaning is too much of a hassle, most people won't do it often enough.

    I think this is bad, there's a reason almost everyone does not skate when it's wet. This is dangerous and stating not to skate on the edges is a foolish statement, why do wheels wear out on one side more than others? Because people are not informed on how and when to flip them around (maintenance). People can't stay on the centers all the time. I'm not even at the 3 minute mark and you're already talking about riding staircases, c'mon man, most people can't even do jumps. Why are you promoting dangerous movements? Showing and talking about yourself and showing it is one thing, but it appears you're pushing this so that others will try it, this is very irresponsible.

    • @TheRollingRaptor
      @TheRollingRaptor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      I respect your opinion, even though I strongly disagree.
      People's fear of wet asphalt is more dangerous than wet asphalt itself. And to be clear: I'm really no expert rollerblader and I still consider myself a clumsy skater. But even during my first months as an inline skater, I discovered that skating in the rain is far less risky than I thought it to be.
      Now, I don't want to push people to do dangerous things. What I want, is to encourage them to build up confidence step by step. I want to show them: if you mind your strides, you don't have to be afraid of skating in the rain.
      The reason for making this video is that I know a lot of people who hadn't skated for half a year because of the bad weather in Belgium. They were afraid of falling _and_ of ruining their bearings. I want to show them that it's perfectly doable and even fun to skate in the rain (I truly believe it is) and that you can save your bearings after a rain session.
      As I said: I respect your opinion and that means I don't expect you to agree with anything I say. I just wanted to give you my side of this issue and my perspective. All I can say, is: keep on rolling, maybe even when there's a slight drizzle.
