Yup. This is tough. This is my main thing. I always feel like I'm 2 steps forward and 100 steps back everyday, I am a professional player, and I am grateful for everything. But that voice is always there and it sabotages more than i'd like to admit. Thanks for this awesome video Pete!

I did some recording when I was much younger and then again in recent years. In my day job I'm tops at what I do but in the studio I felt like a kid among pros that were younger than me. It was off putting until I realized, "Holy shit, I'm feeling like a kid again! That's a good thing!" I hope you're having fun. It's a beautiful thing making art with other like-minded people.

"why record songs and write music? who's gonna want to hear what I have to say?" this is 100% me, that is the only aspect in which I feel like I self-sabotage. I feel confident and can embrace the struggle when learning other people's music and playing it in a way that satisfies me and I think is truly well played, but this is something that I really struggle with and am slowly trying to get better at day by day...
The truth is that the market really is over saturated but I should do it for the love of it right? Thanks for the video, I'll keep it in my bookmark bar to try to remind myself of this message sometimes

  • @terrywitzu7874

I actually had a manager when I was left to fly solo in Montreal. Firts gig (in a lonnnnnnnnnng time) - recieve call 8 at night.
"Terry you need to play tomorrow night at..."
"I can't. I'm not ready to blah, blah, blah tomorrow night!"
"Oh, but Terry. You must" (lovely Parisian accent)
    So, I did.
We all think we suck, but I'm sure I feel that more than any of you. You still gotta believe in yourself deep down b/c sometimes you don't have a choice.
Even though I was out of practice I was ready enough. The gig went great. (despite showing up and finding out I wouldn't be playing through ANYTHING. Just an open stage, not even a mic! [believe in yourself])

My favourite video so far, you really lifted me up. It's so good to know not to be alone in this.
I am working on this currently:
Just know that you cannot fail. Even if you e.g. side-read 13hrs a day and are rejected you still acquired amazing new skills and showed how dedicated you are. That's a rare gift.
And if you ever think, "Who would want to listen to this?", your first answer to yourself should always be, "Me, no matter if I am already good or still need to do some work.
I am my own best friend before everyone else, and I will always be wanting to listen to every step of the way, forwards or backwards. Because that is what best friends do.
And if the goal is too big for me, I will tackle it in batches and see how far it can take me."

Yes Pete! After I turned 40 that little voice kicked my ass and kept telling me I was getting too old to compete in this young game. But I believed in myself, worked on a more positive attitude and landed a gig with a young, extremely talented singer/songwriter in Nashville and I just got home from a great gig/weekend with her and the band. I tell people that if you really want "it" (whatever "it" might be), you have to be able to wake up every morning, looking yourself in the mirror, and telling yourself "THIS is ALL I want to be doing". Dude! Really great addition to your series. Nicely done. Puts me in mind of a related topic: Finding and defining your voice on the instrument.
To my mind, that means having the belief in your own voice and developing the all-important ability to let go of those little instances of doubt or self-questioning to completely immerse yourself in the expression of your voice through your instrument. Ultimately, it's about achieving that state of flow and about the silencing the critical self in the moment of playing the instrument.
Maybe a topic you could share your thoughts and experiences on someday...

I'm crying because a) I'm a cryer, deal and because b) I had a few bad beats this week.
Nothing that is anyone’s fault. Maybe someone was professionally careless. But this industry is so fluid. And I'm very reasonable. Even if MY OWN COMMITMENT to another has been compromised. What can you do?
It took all the mental fortitude in the world to NOT go to that place where I’d allow myself to believe it was somehow something I DID. I have no proof I’d done anything wrong. If anything, the opposite, despite my unapologetic Italian Jersey ways.
So thanks for this one a lot. The opening particularly resonated. I've said several times these are helpful to any member of the ”gig economy”... I'm proof.
Who the FUCK is not emailing you to sponsor this shit? Someone out there needs to level up their fucking thinking. #sorrynotsorry
