Took my sps tactical to the range for the first time this weekend. Replaced the houge stock with a h-s precision one, nightforce 2.5-10/42 scope, base and rings and was getting half inch groups all day. I was simply amazed. For a 600$ gun, you can't get any better.

Great video series as usual from you guys. I just ordered a Savage 10FCP-SR 308 Win 24-inch as a budget long range rifle as I am trying to get into LR shooting myself just as a hobby. I'll look to see if you have any reviews on it, but if not, I'd like to see a review on it if you guys have time to throw that one in. I ended up going with the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x50 FDE with TRMR2 reticle after I saw the review on the HDMR. Thanks for your help in making that decision. Keep up the great work sir.

The group at 11:40 is interesting. Your most accurate shot was the first shot, which was also a cold bore shot. After your first shot, your barrel is fouled and heated, so the impact points seem to change permanently. If you don't count them as part of the same group, your groupings are extremely good.

Quick question sir? I am building this exact rifle. (Different scope) I was wondering if you did any break in on that barrel before zeroing ? Do you believe in break in? Or just clean & shoot it? If you did what were the steps? Thanks for this video series! It is exactly what in looking for, very informative!!!

  • @ClimbOnProductions
    @ClimbOnProductions 10 ปีที่แล้ว

I appreciate the series. How much variance in the groupings can be attributed to the barrel not being broken in yet? I took my rifle to the range today to zero and begin the barrel break in process, only shot 15 rounds through it and was averaging almost 2" groups at 100yds. I was using cheap 147gr PMC, i didnt want to waste match ammo on zeroing. Do you think the cheap ammo is a bigger factor in the poor grouping or an unbroken-in barrel?

I picked up the habit of letting the follow through pick my head up off the cheek weld. I know that is bad technique but I also found that when I try to force the stable motion of keeping cheek weld throughout the follow through, my accuracy suffers. Good shooting here on this video...I assume you were in the Marine Corps.

great stuff brother, I appreciate the time to answer my silly questions. Here in Alaska most expertise is geared toward hunting set-ups. Question three.... When my stock arrives, and because of the fact I'm new to precision shooting, should I get a proffesional to install it? Or..... you could hurry the hell up with your next segment!
Keep up the good work. It pains me to say this, but, Sempi Fi!

I have recently built up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical. I am working on building a M40A4 clone, or as close as I can get (cant afford the optics used). I did dremel out the for end a bit so that the barrel would free float when on the Harris bi-pod. I had the muzzle threaded at a local gun shop for the Surefire Socom muzzle brake. I used Badger Ordnance base and rings. The scope I went with is Trijicon Accupoint 5-20X50 and was able to secure sub moa groups at 100 yards. Could the groups you obtained be due in part to the optics you choose for the budget build? The next thing on my list is McMillan A4 USMC spec stock and Badger Ordnance M5 DBM. I did adjust the stock trigger. Overall I am pretty happy with the set up. I watch your videos all the time, keep up the good work, and Semper Fi ! BTW I am shooting Federal Gold Medal 175 gr

John, run some 2000MR powder with the Hornady 178s, HP or ELDs, my load is 47.3grs in Rem brass, shoots very good in my classic stocked, stainless steel rem sporter barrel, generally less than 2" at 200yds using 1.5-6x Burris Signature.

Trigger control is the hardest of the nine fundamentals of marksmanship to master. Making dam sure of natural point of aim is critical.
My Howa 1500s will smoke em all into a single jagged hole everytime I wait 15 minutes between shots to let these skinny barreled rifles time to retract from the heat, and so does my whole damn mess of rifles.
I am a reloading fool, and have to admit that you need the correct reloads for precision marksmanship.
In the marine corps, they build the rifles in Quantico to shoot the 175 grain Sierra Match kings, which are factory made ammo. This is exactly why we had to list the ammo lot numbers. DODIC- AA 11 Nomenclature M118 LR 7.62 SB.
And then the Lot #. Remember?
Since I don't have a precision rifle, I had to do it the other way, and I guarandamtee you that my stoopid Howas, Old Remington 700 30/06, Weatherby Vanguards, and that cheap ass Ruger American will poke all three into a single jagged hole everytime I let those barrels cool for 15 minutes between shots.
This is my new recipe for precision shooting., besides strict adherence to the 9 fundamentals of marksmanship.

I notice that in the second test, the groups seemed to close at first (that second one was fantastic) and then open up again (the one in the middle especially so). Is this because of the progressive effect first of the "fouling shot" phenomenon, and then of barrel heating?

I have always bore sighted my rifle used a fixed bench took the first shot and since the rifle is locked into the same position I just look through the scope and dial my reticle to where the first shot hit and then take the shot again on target and its usually spot on.

Hey i noticed in your vid that you mentioned the barrel was contacting the stock. Would you say that is a big negative as far as accuracy goes. Thanks. And great vids

next question, what's the benefit of the long single piece scope base compared to the two piece? I bought weaver front and rear scope bases with Warne Maxima series 4 screw rings. Will this suffice or should I put more thought into a better set up? After dropping better than a grand on a scope I don't want crappy bases and rings holding me back....

The factory stock is the only issue with this rifle, which is why i opted for the Magpul.

I have the same rifle, same scope. do you think that bipod might be messing with your groups? When I shot off a bag..prone supported, I was getting consistent 3/4" groups with 168gr Hornady MATCH. but off a bipod my groups were up around 1 1/2" plus. the hogue stock on this rifle isnt all that great to me. i would like to get a hs precision or bell and carlson and then maybe the shots off a bipod will improve. Whats your take in this?

  • @zoltanferencz5165
    @zoltanferencz5165 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I would have thought that with the 1:10 rifling it would like heavier ammo better than the usual 1:12 that more hunter-ish variants of the 700 comes with. Am I wrong for assuming that the 1:10 for this rifle was intended to control a heavier round better? I try to stay above 168 but part of that is just the cool factor of throwing heavier rounds down range which make for better power upon impacting the target.

Groups should get smaller as the barrel breaks in. Did you dial the eleavation down than zero the scope @ 100 so you have more room to dial up for the long shots combined with the 20 MOA base. Thats a tip if you dont got a 20 MOA base.

That's why when I go out to zero again soon, I "ALWAYS" zero by shooting the dime traces. Since the last time I shot was out to 800 yards about a year ago across a field, I will be re-checking my zero to see how well my NightForce returned to perfect zero on the dime traces. (I'm sure my NightForce is still dead on though.)

I searched around and it seems to be a limited edition sps Varmint. My question is, is this a good rifle compare to the 1:12 twist sps tactical? also I notice the barrel isn't free floated. Is it suppose to be like this? should i get a different stock? Thanks

He tells about the 1/4 MOA of "DEAD SPACE" or "bullet play" on a 1/4 MOA rated barrel rifle. There will always be approx 1/4 MOA cone of dead space @ 100 yards that a 1/4 MOA rifle can never be zeroed to.
Just like there will always be 2 MOA of "DEAD SPACE" or "bullet play" on a 2 MOA rated barrel rifle. There will always be approx 2 MOA circle of "dead space" or " bullet play" @ 100 yards that a 1/4 MOA rifle can never be zeroed to even using a NightForce.

Based on drop, 100 yards is usually right around the apex of the bullet's trajectory. if you zero it at 50 yards, it matches up with the 200 yard (roughly) zero. At 100 yards, you're looking at about a 1.5 inch rise above POA. This means that the bullet is closer to the POA for a longer period of time. It also means less adjustment at anything under 300 yards or so.

Your groups look like when a barrel is to hot. Im gonna guess yours wasnt. I know you probably werent trying to but you gave the R700 kind of a bad name.

You know you don't have to press the bolt release again when putting the bolt back right?

For the price these are good scope for the money, and just to be used for plinking. But I also think the glass has alot to do with them having different point of aim's, point of imacts.
Where as the NightForce does not have this problem. NightForce has supreme quality Glass that holds the same dead on sight picture everytime you look thru it.

You are jumping while firing. Sometimes earmuffs are too quiet and we get hyper aware to squeezing slowly as to surprise ourselves and we jump before the weapon fires. Try some ear buds with inserts and leave one insert out. Its an ol LRM trick. Great video. Sold me on purchasing this rifle in AAC

Hah. Rob, I can assure you that is not what is going on. If you dig a little deeper in this channel it should be pretty clear to you that it isn't the shooter. However you are of course free to believe what you wish.

yea, that is pricey. I went with the non AAC-SD and slightly diff barrel in the remy 700 model # 84207. Still shoots deadly accurate out of the box and spent less than $600,shipped. Lesson learn....next time, I'm building custom.

+WonderingAimlessly I actually looked at a brand new one in my local store earlier this week. They were asking 2500 for it but it had some crazy looking optic on it and included a Harris and a few other small things.

Hey, I am sure you are sick of the comments, my wife bought me this rifle (isn't she sweet) and I had similar performance shooting 150 grain match ammo. I upped that to some handloads of 168 gr a-max on lapua brass and my groups are consistently .3 MOA now. I was wondering if that black hills ammo you were shooting had lighter bullets... Thanks for the vid!

I don't recall if it was BHA 168 or 175 match.
